Microsoft Admits It ‘Needs To Do Better’ In Europe

Microsoft is traveling to Germany and Sony isn't, that could help.

One day after reports surfaced that Sony is dominating the European market with the PS4, a new article has Phil Spencer going on the record as saying he understands Microsoft needs to do better in the region. “When I look globally, mainland Europe is definitely an area we want to focus on.” Spencer said in the latest issue of EDGE. Spencer added that he thinks going to Gamescom in Germany is going to play a big part in making the company’s presence more well known in Europe.

It will also certainly help that Spencer’s team is going to be officially unveiling some pretty big games, including Scalebound. It seems as if getting back into competition is going to be a bit of an uphill climb if claims that Sony has a much as 80 percent of the market in Europe. Certainly holding a press conference on August 4 is going to help but it seems unlikely the company is going to be able to make a big dent in Sony’s hold this year.

On the flipside, Sony is skipping Gamescom altogether. If part of the market control is that Microsoft simply hasn’t had a presence on the continent and Sony has, then the two might basically be switching roles at the end of 2015. That could spell good news for Microsoft as they head into 2016, when most of the games they show off in Germany this fall will be getting released. Sony will be making an appearance in Paris later this year, but Microsoft could already have started getting a better foothold by then.
