Many people complain that Uncharted games are linear. Considering the game looks so gorgeous, it’s not a surprise many people want to explore vast lands. It may be technically not possible, but Amy Hennig from Naughty Dog says that Linearity is intentional.
“We like those kind of games,” she said in a Gametrailers bonus round. “As players and fans of other games, but for the action-adventure, especially the pulp-adventure genre, that doesn’t really make sense.”
“That’s not really our genre,” she added.
She said that it was intentional and going semi-open world would ruin the narrative.
“It’s about having a very clear, linear story arc that doesn’t allow for a lot of the dilution that is created by player choice in some cases. We always call it ‘wide linear’ within the path that we give you you have a lot of choice within it, it’s not just hit this button, and this button, and this button.”
Linearity works well for Uncharted 3. Anything more than that would break up the pacing. Naughty Dog found an amazing formula with Uncharted, and some negative reviews shouldn’t discourage them. Stay tuned for our review soon.
