The NPD group has released sales data for video game software and hardware in the United States for the month of July. The Nintendo Switch, which was the highest selling console in the US last month (and the month before that) continues to lead the hardware charts (via GamesBeat). Not only is it the highest selling hardware in the US for the month, it also remains the highest selling console of the year so far.
Beyond the Switch, though, the market has slowed down and shows decline over last year, which makes sense, considering how late into the PS4 and Xbox One’s lives we are. Hardware spending in July 2019 is down year-on-year by 22 per cent, standing at $169 million. Meanwhile, year-to-date hardware spending has also decreased year-over-year, standing currently at $1.5 billion. The Switch is the only console that sales gains year to date, with all other hardware going down.
With the Switch receiving many major big-hitting games for the rest of the years, being in the prime of its life, and receiving a new hardware revision, these strong sales are bound to continue for the foreseeable future. Conversely, with the PS5 and the Xbox Scarlett not too far away, their current gen versions might not fare too well in the coming months.
