Octopath Traveler was something of a throwback to the old school Japanese RPGs of the past. By and large, it seems to have done very well for itself in the sales department and was mostly well received. Now the wait is on for the next title in the franchise, but it does seem like you’re going to be waiting awhile.
In an interview with Famitsu, Producer Tomoya Asano commented on the next console game. He doesn’t get into any specifics, but basically says we’ll have to have some extra patience because it will be a time before we get more information about it. He points fans towards the upcoming Bravely Default 2, another throwback RPG we’re due to get more information about soon, in the meantime (thanks to DualShockers for translations).
“As for the next Octopath Traveler console game we mentioned in the past, it looks like it’ll take a little while until we can reveal more information. Sorry about this. For now, I would be grateful if our console games fans would check out the upcoming Bravely Default 2.”
Octopath Traveler did receive a mobile title that served as a prequel, but it was on a much smaller scale and doesn’t seem like it’ll be brought over to consoles and PC. It’s unclear what direction they plan to take the series, whether a traditional direct sequel or a totally new set of characters and story in the style of Final Fantasy. We’ll just have to wait to find out. The original game is available now on Switch, PC and Stadia.
