Development

Overwatch was first officially unveiled at BlizzCon 2014. The developers said this game is looking to emphasize cooperative gameplay using a cast of various “heroes.” These characters each have their own abilities and roles within a team that is set up inside the game.

Overwatch will be released for PCs and current gen consoles. On January 12, 2015, the development team ran into a bit of a problem when the United States Patent and Trademark Office suspended Blizzard’s application for a trademark for Overwatch due to “a likelihood of confusion” with a previously registered trademark. In October of 2015, Blizzard was able to solve the problem by coming to an agreement with the company that held the parent that led to the confusion. Blizzard  also got the patent it had been seeking from the federal government later in the month of October.

During PAX East 2015, Blizzard Entertainment revealed new maps and new characters. The company also announced that the game’s closed beta would begin on October 27, 2015. Shortly after its first closed beta ended, on November 5, 2015, Blizzard revealed the game’s Origins Edition. The company also announced the title was geared towards the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and that it was looking at a May 2016 launch date. It also announced that the pre-order of the game was made available for pre-purchase on Battle.net.

In December of 2015, Blizzard announced it would bring back a closed beta for Overwatch in February of 2016.

The company has said that the game will be supported by new updates, which include new maps and characters, a number of different times after the game’s launch. All of these additional content packs are planned as being free and do not require additional payment. While Blizzard had been saying they were shooting for May as the release month for Overwatch, in early March the company finally announced an official release date of May 24, 2016.

Story

Overwatch is set in the near-future Earth, and takes place years after the resolution of the world wide “Omnic Crisis”. This event put all of humanity under threat of the “Omnic” artificial intelligence. Omnic led an uprising of robots all around the world and war between these robots and the human race broke out. In order to end the war, the United Nations created a fighting force and organization called Overwatch. This organization did indeed turn the tide of the war. In the years after the war, Overwatch stayed on as a kind of police force geared towards keeping the peace. Eventually, there were rumors that the organization itself was becoming corrupt. Eventually the organization disbanded but some of its best soldiers still believe they are a force for good and continue to attempt to help people.

Gameplay

Chris Metzen of Blizzard acknowledged that parts of Overwatch, such as maps, share “continuity” with the company’s cancelled MMORPG, Titan, though the games are completely different. This game features teams of as many as six players that will go up against one another or against the computer. This is a first person shooter that features the ability to take on the personality of more than 20 different “heroes.” The developers have pointed to a desire to keep its game styles “simple”, as well as wanting to make sure the players are working to accomplish goals as a team rather the team has said Overwatch will not contain a what has become a traditional deathmatch mode in most first person shooter games.

While there are a number of heroes available for use, they are divided up into a couple of different classes. The four character roles include: offense characters which have high speed attacks but low defense. Defense characters are used to form choke points for enemies. Support characters are able to provide buffs for their teammates and debuffs  on their enemies. The final class of characters are called Tanks. These character classes have a large amount of armor and hit points to withstand enemy attacks they can be used to actually draw enemy fire away from their teammates.

Players are not stuck with one character or character class once the game has started. After they have died in game, they can switch which characters they want to play as and choose any of the others, as long as no one on their team is currently playing as that character. The maps that are used in the game are based on real places. This allows the players to truly feel as though they are playing a game that takes place in a future version of Earth.
