The closed beta for Payday 3 kicked off on August 2nd and will be available for the next few days on PC and Xbox Series X/S. It features only one heist, “No Rest for the Wicked”, but players can look forward to several more at launch. In a new Dev Diary, Starbreeze producer Andreas Häll-Penninger confirmed that the co-op shooter would have eight unique heists.
The goal is to ensure that “each heist has its own identity,” said Häll-Penninger. “So when the creative process starts, we’re always asking ourselves, what unique gameplay element does this heist have, and how do we make it look and feel unique, even if some of them have a similar setting?”
While the team wants each heist to “feel like a set piece” (which fits with the earlier sentiment of the game emulating a “Hollywood heist”), it also wants it to feel like Payday. It also fits with the approach to micro destructions, aka the small destructible objects in environments, and death animations. While the level of detail is realistic, the over-the-top nature of the chaos makes heists feel like Hollywood films.
Payday 3 launches on September 21st for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Unlike its predecessor, it’s always online. Head here for more details on the difficulty options. You can also learn more about the new enemy types here.
