The cancellation of Platinum Games’ Scalebound has resulted in quite the backlash towards Microsoft. Xbox boss Phil Spencer tried allaying fears about the Xbox One’s 2017 line-up and has spoken further about taking risks with future games.
Spencer said on Twitter that despite the cancellation, “I know we have to take risks. I realize right now probably sounds hollow but I agree.”
He also noted that this wouldn’t stop Microsoft from investing in third party titles though the focus was still on its own studios. “I won’t abandon signing independent studio projects but I agree first-party internal studios are critical.”
Spencer also apologized for the cancellation, stating that, “It hurt me as well and to the community I apologize. I want everything we start to turn out great, to take risks, create diversity.”
And in case you’re wondering, it wasn’t a case of Scalebound needing more money. “Apologies but this isn’t how games get built. There isn’t a pour in $X and get game. Much more iterative and organic than that,” said Spencer.
