PS5 And Next Xbox 2020 Release Date Hinted At By AMD CEO

The next generation of consoles might end up kicking off in 2020.

Tangible information on the next generation of consoles has been coming in at faster clip of late, leading many to wonder when we might or might not get to see the actual launch of said consoles. Recently, Sony confirmed that we wouldn’t be seeing the release of the PS5 within the next 12 months, and now, new information has narrowed down that window further, suggesting that the PS5 – and possibly even the next Xbox – could be launching later in 2020.

Speaking at AMD’s recently quarterly financial results meeting, CEO Lisa Su spoke about the company’s partnership with Sony, mentioning that the same was projected to lead to an uptick in business for 2020. Su mentioned that though 2019 has seen a bit of a fall in business for AMD, 2020 will instead be seeing growth, while also categorically refusing to refer to “any particular customer”- which might suggest a partnership with both, Sony and Microsoft for their respective next gen consoles.

“We are very pleased with our partnership and expanding our partnership with Sony on their next-generation consoles,” said Su. “As we see, the semi-custom business at this point, we still believe that it’s going to be down substantially in 2019, let’s call it approximately 20%-plus. And then as we go into 2020, without talking about any specific customer, we believe that semi-custom will return to a growth business for us in 2020 and beyond.”

Recently, Su also spoke in greater detail about AMD’s relationship with Sony and the work they’re doing together on the PS5, mentioning that they’re excited to see more of the system’s “special sauce”- which, of course, she didn’t elaborate on. Read more on that through here.
