RAGE 2 is an open world post-apocalyptic first person shooter developed by Avalanche Studios and id Software and published by Bethesda.

Development

RAGE 2 is jointly developed by Avalanche Studios and id Software. A sequel to RAGE had been planned since the game’s initial release, and id Software had been working on it, before the project was temporarily brought to a halt so that all resources could be contributed to the development of Doom 4, which would go on to be renamed DOOM and released in 2016.

id Software were eventually impressed by the work done by Avalanche Studios on the Just Cause series, particularly their physics based emergent gameplay, and approached the studio for the handling of the development of RAGE 2. The two studios began collaborating, with Avalanche Studios handling primary development – especially the game’s open world aspects – and id Software overseeing development on the title.

The game uses Avalanche Studios’ Apex Engine, instead of id Software’s own engine, which had been used for all id Software titles (as well as the Wolfenstein games made by MachineGames). This was done to support the game’s open world ambitions- the Apex Engine enabled the developers to create detailed indoor and outdoor environments, and make sure that there would be no loading screens throughout the game to make way for seamless exploration.

RAGE 2’s existence was leaked when Walmart Canada prematurely put up a listing for the game, following which Bethesda themselves started teasing the game as well. The game was then officially announced and unveiled on May 14, 2018, followed by a more in-depth look at Bethesda’s E3 press conference the following month.

The developers intended from the get go for RAGE 2 to realize the potential of the first RAGE title, which they felt it hadn’t been able to meet due to limited technologies at the time. Another focus for the developers was to change up the art style and make it more vibrant and colourful, as opposed to the largely brown hues and aesthetic of the first RAGE title. The developers also eventually announced that the game would not feature any loot boxes. The developers also confirmed that RAGE 2 would be a single player-only title, but that they planned on supporting it with continuous post-launch content in a live service fashion.

RAGE 2 was announced as being scheduled for release on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but co-developers id Software have mentioned that they’re investigating a Nintendo Switch port as well, following on from many Bethesda titles have supported the system (including ports for the likes of DOOM, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, as well as a simultaneous day and date launch for DOOM Eternal). According to the developers, the usage of Apex Engine as opposed to id Tech makes a Switch port complicated, but it is something they are investigating.

Story

RAGE 2 takes place in the year 2165, thirty years after the events of the first game, in a post-apocalyptic world that was hit by an asteroid, an incident which decimated the planet’s topography, gave rise to mutant creatures, and wiped out the vast majority of the living population. In RAGE 2, years after the events of the first game, the survivors have found ways to somewhat rebuild the world, turning parts of the desolate landscape into lush and vibrant biomes, from jungles to wetlands to tundras.

The tyrannical group known as the Authority is still active and at large, and is mercilessly wiping out any who oppose their rule, while gangs and bandits still operate freely, even as society manages to bring back some semblance of trade and civilization. Players take on the role of one of the last remaining Rangers, known as Walker, who gets robbed by the Authority, but seeks vengeance and decides to bring them down.

RAGE 2’s cast of characters features a mix of new faces and those returning from the first game in the series, including the likes of Antonin Kvasir and Lossum Hagar.

Gameplay

RAGE 2 is set in an open world environment, which will consist of five distinct biomes, including swamplands, forests, cities, and deserts. The entire map will be open and explorable from the beginning of the game, allowing players to go wherever they please. The world will also have towns and settlements for players to visit and explore.

RAGE 2 will also have vehicles like trucks, buggies, and even gyrocopters. Vehicles can be used to explore the world, while there will also be a vehicular combat aspect to the title. Though vehicular combat won’t be too much of a focus, the developers have confirmed that players can “drive anything with wheels” in the open world, while there will also be a few particular main vehicles that can be used in combat. These main vehicles will also be upgradable, and can be customized with weapons and custom loadouts.

Players can customize Walker’s character, including their gender and appearance, while there are also unlockable skills. Enemies drop energy when killed, and when enough energy is collected, players can go into Overdrive. In this state, Walker constantly reheals, while guns deal more damage and enemies drop more energy.

RAGE 2 also has powers that players can use in combat, such as a ground slam, which grows more powerful as the height from which players slam into the ground increases; a kinetic blast called Shatter that sends enemies hurtling away; Vortex, which can be thrown at enemies, which then sucks them into its radius, and can be combined with grenades or explosions for greater and wider damage; and Barrier, a portable shield that blocks incoming enemy fire and kills anything that touches it.

There are also several high-concept weapons in the game, such as the Grav-Dart launcher, which attaches enemies to objects in the environment that players choose; the Firestorm Revolver, which fires rounds that stick to enemies and ignite when triggered by players; the Hyper-Canon, which fires a magnetically powered up shot to destroy enemies and is best used from long range; or the Charged pulse canons. The Wingstick also returns from the first RAGE, but is expanded upon, and can be upgraded and powered up several times, with players being able to unlock higher damage, explosions upon impact, and even locking on to enemies and being able to bend around curves and corners.

Players also have supporting items like turrets and medkits. Both nanotrite abilities and weapons can be upgraded by Feltrite, which is a resource that is found in chests around the open world. Enemies also often drop Feltrite upon dying.
