Rresident Evil 7 is a first person survival horror game that is due to launch in January of 2017 for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. There will also be a virtual reality version of the game that will only be playable on the PSVR for the first 12 months of its existence. The game is being developed and published by Capcom. While the game is called Resident Evil 7, it is actually the 11th installment in the Resident Evil series.
This will also be the first time Capcom has told the story of a main installment in the series from the first person point of view. The game was officially announced as part of Sony’s E3 press conference and later in the day, a demo was released. Capcom took the unusual tactic of making it clear the demo was supposed to be more about the direction the development team was moving in and said it was not a part of the final game.
Development
Talk about Resident Evil 7 began in earnest back in October of 2015. Capcom began to get questions about its plans to make a game with that title and rather cryptically responded they were not at a place where they could talk about it but that fans of the series should “stay tuned.” In June of 2016, the company officially announced they were working on Resident Evil 7 and that the game would launch for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC in December. Capcom also released a demo for the game, but cautioned the demo was not a part of the final game. This playable preview was even going to have a different protagonist than the final game.
The development team did say the demo could be looked at as kind of a prologue to the finished product. During the hoopla surrounding the announcement of the title, the company also confirmed veteran horror video game writer Richard Pearsey would be part of the team. Capcom also divulged that they built a brand new engine from the ground up in order to make Resident Evil 7. The new engine is called the RE engine and was also used to build the “Kitchen” demo that was released over the summer of 2016 to show off the VR aspects of the new game.
The development team has said they have worked hard in order to make the game look really, really pretty. There is the Virtual Reality part of the game which has been described as being terrifying. Capcom has said they have worked to make sure the game will have 4K and HDR support on both the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One S.
Story
Capcom has said Resident Evil 7 is not a reboot of any of the previous titles in the long running series. Instead it will be part of the wide ranging storyline and will tie in, in some way to previous installments. The team did say the story was “inspired” by the original Resident Evil game. The game is said to have a brand new protagonist named Ethan who has lost his wife and is looking for her in an abadoned mansion.
Part of the story in this game will include the character needing to find VHS tapes in order to fill in the blanks of the mystery. This is a twist on the audio logs that play in the background. This time players will have to stop and watch these videos in order to get the full story. That story will be affected and the final outcome will, in part be determined by player choices.
One part of the story that has been slightly divulged is the mystery disembodied finger that was part of the demo. The development team has said that finger will play a part in the final game, but hasn’t said how it fits into the larger story.
Gameplay
Unlike any of the other main Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 7 is going to be presented in a first person point of view. Capcom has said it believes this is the most “advantageous way” to present a horror game. While Capcom said that the key aspect of this game will be exploring and seeing the story unfold, the key aspects of the series will be included as well. This means combat, puzzle solving and item collection are all in the game as well. Quick time events have been stripped from this version but items like health restoring herbs will be included as a nod to the series’ origin.
Zombies will still be part of the game, though Capcom has said the hordes players would run into in previous versions are pared down for Resident Evil 7. At the same time, the development team has said the zombies and other enemies that are present in the game will be more difficult to defeat and harder to get away from.
When it does come to the combat aspects of the game players will be able to use pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws to kill their enemies. The development team has said the combat is accompanied by realistic gunfire, screams of pain, and exaggerated blood-splatter effects.
Resident Evil 7 is only a single player game. Capcom has not included any kind of multiplayer or online mode.
Characters
The protagonist in Resident Evil 7 is a brand new character that has not been featured, even peripherally in previous installments in the long running series. This new protagonist is named Ethan and he’s found himself in this rather less than enviable position because he’s looking for his missing wife in a run down old mansion. In addition to a brand new protagonist, Capom has said no characters from previous games will even make a cameo in Resident Evil 7.
In addition to Ethan and his wife, who may or may not make an actual appearance in the game, there will be plenty of zombies and mutant creatures for the protagonist to fight against, we’ve also been introduced to a family that looks to play a central part in the game. This family appears to be zombified or at least mutated to the point of cannibalism.
Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game
