When it comes to video game horror franchises, many have come and gone. Dead Space, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, just to name few. While some of those are still around to some degree, not one of them can touch the longevity of Resident Evil. The series launched in 1996 and has been semi-annual ever since, and is still going strong. It’s now crossed a major milestone of over 100 million units sold.
While Capcom has not made any official announcement, they updated their sales data to reflect the last quarter, which placed the series at 98 million units sold. Now, that isn’t 100 obviously, but keep in mind this covers up to March 31st, 2020. You may recall small little title called Resident Evil 3 released on April 3rd, and we know it’s sold over 2 million units as of April 13th, meaning it has put the franchise over that triple digit mark. It makes it the first Capcom franchise to cross that mark across an incredible 135 titles. The only other one even close is the Monster Hunter series at 63 million units.
The franchise is as strong as ever, with rumors swirling about the upcoming Resident Evil 8 and potential remake of Resident Evil 4. There is but one true king in the horror space, we’re just living in its shadow.
