It’s hard to believe that Rare’s Sea of Thieves is now five years old. When it first launched in 2018 after the initial announcement in 2015, the open-world pirate game was criticized for its lack of content, repetitive gameplay and numerous bugs. All these years later and it’s received significant content updates with new stories, locations, mechanics, and much more.
Even as it celebrates its fifth anniversary, Rare is already looking far into the future. An article on Xbox Wire revealed that the team held a meeting to plan the game’s next five years. There are ideas for smuggling, rewards to fight those griefing other players, painting screenshots, and much more. The main drive is to keep making things that players will enjoy.
Creative Director Mike Chapman says, “I think 10 years of Sea of Thieves will feel like a long time – but, also, we’ll blink and be there. And I still think we’ll have unfinished business when we get to that point.”
In the meantime, the documentary Sea of Thieves: Voyage of a Lifetime is available and discusses the game’s development from the initial prototype to now. Check it out below.
