September NPD Report: Grand Theft Auto 5 Ranks at Number 1

However, it didn't set the record for highest opening month.

According to the NPD Group’s report for September, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 was the top selling title, accounting for 50 percent of total spending during the month. Interestingly, even though it broke seven Guinness world records and garnered $1 billion at retail in 3 days worldwide, even breaking records set by its predecessors, it didn’t set the record for highest opening month.

So while it may be the biggest game launch in the UK, the same doesn’t apply to the US. Sales don’t include digital sales, used game sales, DLC and micro-transactions, of course. Madden 25 still ranks in the top 5, with NBA 2K14 debuting at third place. Diablo 3 is at fourth place, while FIFA 14 managed to enter at fifth place despite not being on sale the whole month.

The floor is open now for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts to set the record for highest opening month in the United States. Will it be able to when it releases on November 5th worldwide for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC? We’ll find out in a matter of weeks.
