Sony Worldwide Studios Will Continue To Make Story And Character-Driven Games – Hermen Hulst

Sony won't be changing tracks under new leadership.

This generation has seen Sony’s first party really come into its own, with the developers under the Worldwide Studios umbrella graduating from great games to ones that have defined this generation. That’s been thanks to Sony identifying and sticking to a successful formula, with narrative and character-driven games ruling the roost. And though Sony Worldwide Studios recently saw a change in leadership, with Guerrilla Games boss Hermen Hulst taking over from Shuhei Yoshida, their first party won’t be changing the way they approach game development.

Speaking with GamesIndustry, Hulst said that going forward, Sony’s first party studios will continue to make “big, spectacular experiences with story and characters at the core” the way they have been doing for some years now.

“We are very committed to the types of games we’ve been making at Worldwide Studios for the last decade: big, spectacular experiences with story and characters at the core,” said Hulst. “We will keep making these games, because we love to make them. And as a brand we are eager to branch out and start including and curating a new generation of developers, that create new and different experiences for a new generation of gamers.”

Though Sony’s next gen plans remain shrouded in mystery – at least as far as software is concerned – they’ve still got plenty of big hitters lined up for the PS4. Dreams is out in February, followed by The Last of Us Part 2 in May, while Sony will also be premiering new trailer for Ghost of Tsushima at The Game Awards tomorrow.
