This past November ended up creating history, as far as the gaming market in the United States goes. According to the NPD report (via VentureBeat) for video game hardware and software sales for the month of November, all three consoles on the market—PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch—ended up selling over 1.3 million units for the month.
This actually marks the very first time in history (at least since NPD began tracking the games market) that three home consoles ended up selling over 1 million units in a month. It is only the second time that three systems (including handhelds as well, not just home consoles) sold over 1 million units in a month—the first time was in November 2010, when Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS all sold over 1 million units.
In total, $1.182 billion were spent on video game hardware in November, with hardware year to date spending up by 14%, driven by gains for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the NES and SNES Classic. For November alone, sales were up 3% year on year, with Switch sales up severely, offsetting decline seen for every other system. The highest selling console for November in unit sales was PS4, while in terms of revenue, it was the Nintendo Switch.
Put simply, it seems that everyone had a great month last month (though for Nintendo, it seems to have been a bit more special, owing to the record they have set). Now to see how December plays out. On the whole though, it seems like PS4, Xbox One, and Switch are all doing great around the world in general.
