The Demon's Souls Remake studio also tried pitching an updated version of Shadow of the Colossus Remake and more, but to no avail.

The closure of Bluepoint Games, known for its stellar remakes of Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, still stings, especially when considering what would have been. The most obvious question many have asked is why Sony didn’t task them with remaking Bloodborne, a long-sought-after release by many. According to sources speaking to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, it wasn’t to be.

Following the cancellation of its live-service God of War title, Bluepoint allegedly pitched a remake to Sony. However, while the latter felt that it made sense numbers-wise, FromSoftware reportedly “didn’t want it to happen.” Schreier notes that this could be due to Sony respecting FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki’s request that no one else work on the same (which former SIE president Shuhei Yoshida revealed after his departure).

Bluepoint Games apparently tried pitching other projects, including an updated Shadow of the Colossus Remake, a Ghost of Tsushima spin-off and more. Despite approaching other PlayStation Studios, they were apparently “facing heavy financial pressure in recent years,” and couldn’t spare the resources. Eventually, Sony didn’t consider the studio capable of making its own game, and attempts at partnerships fizzled out, which led to its closure.

It seems the studio saw it coming to some extent, with some employees apparently growing “uneasy” after the announcement of the God of War Trilogy Remake. All in all, it’s a tragic end to a capable studio, but other developers are willing to take them in, such as Lords of the Fallen 2 publisher CI Games.

Which of these dormant franchises would you want to see return most?

Every gamer has their own mic drop surprise trailer moment. Mine, and many others, was the first Final Fantasy 7 Remake reveal during a PlayStation State of Play back in 2015. That feeling of your favorite childhood game getting the royal treatment with the best of modern technology is unparalleled. Of course, some remakes or sequels don’t feel as magical and pure as the original, but we all want to experience the hype regardless.

Sequels and remakes are tricky to get right. It can be hard to preserve the charm and quality of the original in a follow-up. It can be even tougher to surpass and iterate on what the first game did so well. Some games are just absolutely begging to be expanded upon with a new entry, and it’s those that we’ll be highlighting here. Each of these titles represents a ‘what if’ that gamers are hungry to see happen one day, but whether due to corporate meddling or cancellations, they still seem so far away.

So with that, here are the ten games whose surprise trailers would make the community absolutely lose it.

Days Gone 2

While the odds of a Days Gone sequel remains unlikely, Sony Bend has managed to stir hype thanks to the game’s April 2025 remaster. with its remaster. Days Gone Remaster finally smooths out the original’s rough framerate while enhancing its visuals with better shadows and 4K resolution. That release reignited hope for a sequel, but those hopes were eventually crushed when Sony Bend posted a job listing seeking someone with “experience with multiplayer game development and design.” The studio has a history of outright dismissing any possibility of a sequel in the past as well, but demand remains high, and where there’s demand, there’s money. Knowing Sony, it wouldn’t be completely implausible to eventually see a Days Gone 2 in the future, especially if fans remain vocal about it.

The Saboteur 2

Remember Pandemic? No, not the 2020 one, the studio that brought us Destroy All Humans and Mercenaries Playground of Destruction. The Saboteur was their last game before being dissolved into the rest of EA, and it had a lot of unique things going for it. Sure, it followed the Ubisoft open-world design ethos, but the WWII France setting and the mechanic of restoring color to liberated districts stood out. Now imagine how cool a sequel with top-notch voice talent and an actually compelling story would be. With EA’s enormous budget and the creative potential of that setting, a Saboteur 2 could finally give us a GTA-style game set in WWII Europe, but it’s a long shot at best.

Uncharted 5

The last time we ventured into the world of Uncharted was 2017’s spin-off starring Chloe and Nadine. Lost Legacy seemed to be paving the way for the next generation of Uncharted with its more open-ended exploration and, well, lack of Nathan Drake. Of course, Nathan’s story isn’t necessarily over following the ending of Uncharted 4. Like Indy coming out of retirement in the latest Indiana Jones films, Nathan can be called for one last globe-trotting adventure. Uncharted 5 is rather likely to happen at some point. Naughty Dog has been working on a project led by Uncharted writer Shaun Escayg for years now, and it’s not Intergalactic. It’s unlikely we’ll see Uncharted 5 before Intergalactic releases, but we sure hope to see it at some point.

Bloodborne 2

Is there any video game sequel more craved than Bloodborne 2? Bloodborne is the one gigantic Sony-owned IP that somehow just keeps getting overlooked. The Last of Us got numerous remasters and even Days Gone just received one. What is Sony waiting for? Well, one thing’s certain: if Bloodborne 2 were announced, it would be the only game capable of rivaling GTA 6 in sheer hype. Here’s hoping it avoids the multiplayer-heavy direction of FromSoftware’s recent projects and instead doubles down on the slow-burn, atmospheric exploration that made the original Bloodborne unforgettable.

Titanfall 3

Titanfall 3 occupies the same heartbreaking territory as Bloodborne 2: everyone wants it, yet EA refuses to greenlight it. The first cancellation came in 2019, when EA halted development in favor of Apex Legends, chasing the booming hero-shooter market and its lucrative ongoing revenue. Then, earlier in 2025, The developer had to shutter their planned Titanfall extraction shooter due to layoffs. What made Titanfall 2 so special was its well-paced and wildly inventive single-player campaign. It’s probably the last significant FPS campaign that I can think of that wasn’t a Doom title. It’s still not an impossibility that the developer gets a legitimate opportunity to make Titanfall 3, but a major shift in EA’s priorities needs to happen first.

Sleeping Dogs 2

This one’s more of a pipe dream than others on this list. Sleeping Dogs is a very popular cult classic for a reason; it oozed personality and was a genuine counterpart to GTA. Unfortunately, the development studio, United Front Games, shut down in 2016. The main developer still holds the rights to the Sleeping Dogs IP, though, so maybe there is a snowball’s chance in Southtown for it to happen. The studio’s MMO spin-off, Triad Wars, took place within the universe of Sleeping Dogs. launched briefly in open beta but was quickly shut down after poor reception. But imagine a thoroughbred sequel to Sleeping Dogs, one that wasn’t a sloppy MMO, but a single-player game with a more intricate Hong Kong map filled with fully realized martial-arts combat propelled by modern processing power. A proper Sleeping Dogs 2 could be incredible.

Metal Gear 1 Remake

“I FEEL ASLEEP!!” Imagine that iconic line from the 1988 NES version of the original Metal Gear (first released in 1987) being fully voiced in a modern, high-fidelity remake. Unlike polished and cleaned up script of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I’d want Konami to preserve the hilarious botched translation of the original. It would both honor Kojima and provide some charm to the game. Of course, the fully blown HD graphics and character renderings would probably make those lines extra awkward, but hey, that’s what makes the series so lovable, right? The good news is a remake of the original Metal Gear isn’t impossible. Konami has shown a willingness to remake classic Metal Gear Solid titles faithfully. And what better candidates than the very first games from the ’80s?

New Dino Crisis

Forget a new Dino Crisis—I’d settle for a remaster or a full remake of the first game. Oh, who am I kidding, I want a new Dino Crisis, sigh. The developer sits on the most beloved dormant IP, barely acknowledging series that fans have begged to see return. Who doesn’t want a new Mega Man (especially Legends), Breath of Fire, or of course, Dino Crisis? Dino Crisis—a 90s survival-horror game —never grew past its more action-oriented 2003 third entry. But fans still swear by the first game, which followed the classic Resident Evil formula in a Jurassic Park-inspired setting. A modern-day game firing on all cylinders would do justice to the original Dino Crisis if RE 2 and RE 3 Remakes are anything to go by. But just imagine what they could do with a completely new entry with the mature horror and first-person perspective of, say, Resident Evil 7.

A New inFamous

Continuing the trend of studios sitting on a golden goose is Sucker Punch and their dormant inFamous series. There was a time when a new InFamous game was the talk of the gaming town. It was a series about open world parkouring around realistic city-scapes. But one element that sets inFamous apart is its Karma system. You can choose your morality in these games, something that shows itself in the powers you unlock as well as key story decisions. With today’s more advanced processing and capabilities, the potential of that system is enormous. Imagine branching storylines, deeper morality-driven powers, and immersive-sim-style world reactions. Heck, just adding more customization elements based on morality would be awesome. But Sucker Punch will need to step away from Ghost to make it happen—and it’s unclear when that day will come.

Sekiro 2

Finally, we have another FromSoftware juggernaut that’s been left alone since its release. Unlike Bloodborne, Sekiro never even received any DLC. None. We all kinda applauded their restraint at the time, but after some years away, it’s hard not to wish the game had gotten an expansion or two. Out of all the Fromsoft games, Sekiro takes the cake for having the most awesome combat. Its very focused and specialized, leading to more intricate and precise controls. Sure, Sekiro didn’t have a lot of playstyles to choose from, but that focus is what made the limited style so polished. A sequel could expand your playstyle selection pretty significantly, and without sacrificing the original’s polish. The core combat system is already built—they’d just need to expand the build options a bit. Fans would love to see it, but as many know, Hidetaka Miyazaki isn’t fond of sequels. So while Sekiro 2 would be a dream come true, we shouldn’t expect it anytime soon.

With this feature, we will be taking a look at 20 of the best PS4 games of all time in no particular order.

With more than 117 million units sold, it’s clear that Sony’s PS4 was a very successful console. It has naturally amassed a vast wealth of both first-party and third-party releases, and this list runs down 20 of the best games it has to offer in no particular order.

God of War

There aren’t many games that are able to deliver a stunning experience in such a smooth manner as Sony Santa Monica was able to do with the 2018 reboot. This story sets the protagonist in a new setting; new boss fights and outstanding level design. It’s both fresh and recognizable at the same time, and the new combat and the camera on offer also embodies the spirit of modern third person game while making it more intentional. The 2018 reboot is definitely one of the best games on the PS4, and is a great starting point for newcomers.

Even if a new State of Play happens next week, you can continue to expect nothing from FromSoftware's acclaimed action RPG.

With Sony’s output of PC ports for PlayStation exclusives seemingly slowing down, one would assume that the company has some announcements in the pipeline. Rumors have circulated about a new State of Play next week, and while the jury is out on whether Demon’s Souls remake or Gran Turismo 7 will be ported, don’t expect Bloodborne.

As reported by Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb on the recent Game Mess Decides, “Checked in on it relatively recently, and kinda continued to hear nothing is happening with Bloodborne, so don’t expect that.”

This only concerns a potential PC port, but as Grubb noted, nothing can really happen without FromSoftware’s involvement. Any hope of a remaster, remake, or a sequel is, as such and probably always will be, practically non-existent. Never say never, and all that, but over a decade since it launched on PS4 to universal acclaim, Sony continues to avoid revisiting Bloodborne.

Which is baffling since the Souls-like action RPG sold nearly 7.5 million copies as of fiscal year 2020, according to documents obtained through a ransomware attack on Insomniac Games. Regardless, at least there are games like NEOWIZ’s Lies of P, which recently received the Overture expansion. Check out our review here.

We present our top picks for PS5 games that allow you to channel your inner fighter and let your weapons do the talking against enemies hell-bent on taking you out of the equation.

For those among you who like to get up close and personal with enemies in your games, there are a ton of great titles that let you approach the action on your own terms. It’s quite thrilling to just dive into the fray with nothing but your skills and weapons in tow.

We’ve put together a list of games that come with fantastic melee systems built to test your reflexes and ability to think on your feet as you take on either hordes of enemies or go head to head with deadly enemies who are just as skilled as you are.

It’s time to dive in!

1. Lies of P

Neowiz’s take on the story of Pinocchio is nothing short of a masterpiece when it comes to how its combat systems convey a sense of danger while also making you feel powerful enough to take them down.

Although the action isn’t as fast-paced as some of the other titles on this list, the game necessitates a methodical approach to its madness. That’s not to say that things don’t heat up with a few bosses that up the ante with unrelenting, vicious combos that can push you to the limits of your skills.

However, a wide selection of weapons, skills, and the ability to mix and match between various weapons and handles can be a great way to get the upper hand. Finding a combination of weapons and skills that works for you is a feeling that other titles find hard to replicate. And that’s not to mention Legion Arms, each of which adds a new wrinkle to your playstyle.

Give this one a try for its story and intense gameplay.

2. The First Berserker Khazan

Neople’s take on the Dungeon and Fighter series blends a unique visual style with a combat loop that quickly becomes quite addictive despite a learning curve that can dissuade even the most determined of players.

Despite a limited selection of weapons, the game’s emphasis on raw aggression makes each fight a flurry of dodges, blocks, parries, and attacks that can quickly let you garner enough Spirit Points to unleash your most devastating skills while The Blade Phantom brings another layer of strategy to the table, allowing Khazan to harness the power of fallen warriors with some interesting effects.

This is a game that can test your patience but reels you in with its revenge-based story and well-designed encounters, aside from bringing a lot of replay value thanks to multiple endings for you to uncover.

3. Thymesia

If we were to complain about anything in Thymesia, its relatively short length is the only thing that comes to mind. Like Khazan, it’s a title that rewards aggression, with Corvus preferring to keep the pressure on his opponents at every instance. The ability to use your enemy’s own weapons against them while channelling your innate abilities to unleash some very cool moves comes together to present a combat experience that can be a challenge to master but is very rewarding to pull off.

When it’s played right, Thymesia is an absolute treat for players looking for a combat experience that lets them take on increasingly deadly threats with brutal efficiency and flashy style.

4. Sifu

This beat ‘em up action game from developer Sloclap is arguably the best martial arts title to be released in recent times. Aside from bringing the best of kung fu to every attack animation and enemies that ensure that those moves are put to good use, Sifu comes with a unique twist on resurrection after you’re taken down in battle.

This mechanic sees your character’s age go up every time they respawn, improving their attack power while lowering their defences. This could mean that even death becomes a strategic component, allowing you to take on increasingly difficult foes at the cost of a lower health bar.

It’s the perfect way to encourage players to constantly improve their skills while strategically using the game’s mechanics to give themselves a much-needed boost when things get out of hand. Its story may not be as interesting as Lies of P, but it’s nothing to scoff at either, making this a title that’s definitely worth your time.

5. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Wo Long is a refined take on the excellent combat mechanics that the studio established with its Nioh franchise. An obscure narrative and fairly linear world make this a game in which combat quickly becomes the star of the show.

Parrying flurries of attacks from enemies while building up your Spirit Gauge to cause some devastation of your own makes each fight a desperate battle for control, with even lowly grunts capable of taking you out with just a few hits.

With each level in the game coming with a Morale System that requires you to defeat enemies in order to be capable to take on mini-bosses and bosses later down the line, Wo Long’s combat systems are a tug of war with your enemies as capable of summarily sending you back to the nearest save point as you are capable of sending them on their way to the next life.

6. Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut

The complete Ghost of Tsushima experience brings a poignant and riveting story, a beautifully crafted open world, and a sublime combat system that has a lot of depth to its mechanics. As a samurai forced to find new ways to take the fight to an invading Mongol army, Jin Sakai’s fight to defend his home sees him pull off some very flashy moves, assisted by your precision and sense of timing in every fight.

Leaping of your horse to challenge Mongol patrols to a standoff still feels as thrilling as it did five years ago, while flowing from stance to stance as we wield the Sakai clan’s katana and tanto against vicious enemies is an absolute treat for players who like to fight with style and flair.

Just be ready to have your heartstrings tugged on as you go further into this epic adventure.

7. Ghostrunner 2

For fans of first-person action, Ghostrunner 2 is quite easy to recommend, considering how its challenge lies in using Jack’s abilities with full awareness of what’s happening around him in any given situation. While his trusty sword is indeed a reliable killing tool, using it in tandem with all the other cool weapons he unlocks is paramount to victory.

His impressive parkour skills are as valuable to the game’s combat loop as the electrified Shurikens that eventually became an invaluable part of how we approached every encounter we had in the game. The cyber ninjas of Dharma Tower can be very deadly enemies, but for those of you who use every tool in your arsenal, they can quickly melt away in the face of your onslaught.

8. Hi-Fi RUSH

Hi-Fi Rush follows Chai, a young man who volunteers for Vandelay Technologies’ Project Armstrong in hopes of receiving a limb replacement. However, things quickly spiral out of control as he finds himself on the run from security forces, with a robotic arm and a target on his back. The game’s biggest hook lies in its rhythmic melee combat. Attacks and player actions are all synced to the beat, rewarding those who time their moves just right with extra damage and stylish combos.

9. Shadow Labyrinth

Bandai Namco’s dark and gritty reimagining of Pac-Man brings a combat loop that is a far cry from the character’s earliest appearances. Swordsman #8 might come with a limited set of skills and a distinct lack of options to heal himself while fending off enemies, but those limitations only serve to encourage a more strategic approach to the task at hand.

With exquisitely designed bosses and levels that are full of danger, this is an adventure that blends brains and brawn into a very attractive package that can keep you occupied for hours on end.

10. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black

If disabling your enemies in combat is more your style, Ryu’s adventures in this Unreal Engine 5 remake of Ninja Gaiden 2 is going to be quite a treat. However, your enemies could decide to cause as much damage as they can before their inevitable death, making this game’s combat an experience in which you are in danger of dying just as much as your opponents are.

With an emphasis on completing encounters while sustaining as little damage as possible, this game is one in which you need to be on your toes at any point in a fight and come out all the more powerful for it. However, using Ryu’s Ultimate Techniques and a host of other useful additions can ensure that you come out on top while managing to minimize the damage he takes while tearing through enemy ranks.

Bonus: Bloodborne

This list of titles with great melee combat experiences feels incomplete without mentioning Bloodborne, the FromSoftware masterpiece that shook up the studio’s combat formula back in 2015. Yes, it was originally a PS4 title and runs only via backward compatibility on PS5s at 30fps.

However, for those of you who can overlook that factor, its brutal combat and a selection of extremely cool weapons can quickly make you find yourself coming back for another bout against deadly bosses and enemies who can push you to the limit of your patience and skill.

It continues to be a unique and distinct take on the FromSoft formula, requiring lightning-quick reflexes and a very aggressive approach to take down its many threats. Approach this one with caution, and you’re sure to find many reasons to spend another hour in the streets of Yharnam.

And that’s a wrap on our favorite melee games that you can play on the PS5. We hope that you enjoy playing them just as much as we did!

In an interview, Jiwon Choi also said that the comparisons with Bloodborne motivated the studio because of high expectations.

It should come as no surprise to any fan of Souls-styled games that Neowiz’s action RPG Lies of P has drawn comparison from fans with FromSoftware’s Bloodborne. In an interview with VGC, game director Jiwon Choi said that the studio felt honoured by the comparison between the two titles.

“Firstly, it is an honour, because we have a lot of respect for those games,” said Choi about comparing Lies of P with Bloodborne. “And second, it motivates us because we respect those games and those comparisons lead to an expectation from our fans.”

Comparisons between Lies of P and Bloodborne largely came about because of the similarities in some gameplay elements, as well as how close the visual aesthetics of both games are. However, it is worth noting that while Bloodborne’s world focuses more on elements of gothic and cosmic horror where werewolves can often be seen besides Lovecraftian horrors, Lies of P instead focuses more on a sense of dread created by the uncanny valley effect by all of the non-human enemies in its world.

Speaking of the respect Choi feels for the works of FromSoftware, he had previously spoken about the upcoming Elden Ring: Nightreign, and how Neowiz as a studio doesn’t want to try and predict how the Soulslike genre will evolve going forward. However, Choi did say that “In terms of our future endeavours, we are definitely open to any sort of consideration in the future.”

“I’ve tried [Nightreign] and it was very refreshing and new,” said Choi. “So that obviously gave me the impression that they’re good developers, they always push their boundaries, their imagination and vision, and it shows. In turn, that for some reason motivated me to deliver the Overture experience as good as it could be.”

Neowiz is currently working on an expansion to Lies of P. Dubbed Overture, the expansion will bring with it a host of new content, including new enemies to fight. Speaking about Overture, Choi said that the expansion serves as a completion of the studio’s goals to create a high-quality single-player experience.

“Our primary focus from the concept of this game was to deliver a high quality, premium action game that is single-player,” he said. “There were a lot of learnings for us [from the base game] and we did our best to reflect those improvements. The expansion is the completion of that.”

While it is just an expansion to the base game, according to Choi, Lies of P: Overture will take players around 15 to 20 hours to finish. He said that this play time is for “experienced players,” which likely means that those newer to the genre might end up needing much more time to finish the expansion. He did mention that Neowiz is trying to ensure that the Overture expansion is welcoming to both veterans of the genre as well as newer players.

“We wanted to really make the content accessible and enjoyable to the veterans of the game, as well as new users,” said Choi. “So we made a game that satisfies both segments of customers. Our prioritisation is more focused on the overall game experience.”

These titles are defined by their unforgettable stories and characters, stellar world-building and design, impeccable gameplay, and more.

With how long and illustrious the history of gaming has been, picking the best games of all time is almost impossible. Nevertheless, it’s worth highlighting the best titles launched across all those generations, what made them special and why you should check them out. Without further ado, here are our picks for the top 30 games of all time, starting with…

30. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec

Perfection in a video game doesn’t come easy, but Polyphony Digital has come closer than most with several of its Gran Turismo titles. Despite cutting back on the number of cars, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is arguably the best of the bunch in terms of physics, AI, and sound (and even its visuals still hold up today). That’s before getting into the improvements with car shops, Gran Turismo Mode, and the long-awaited arrival of Formula One cars.

It's been 10 years since Bloodborne first released on the PS4, and there hasn't been anything that quite scratches that itch.

The year is 2015, and it must have been around the holiday season when I first played Bloodborne. It was one of the first games I tried on my then-brand-new PS4. Having completed most of the game’s bosses, I find myself in a deathly duel against the abomination that is Orphan of Kos. Each loss against this unpredictable monster knocks me hard on my knees. Yet I refuse to falter, and slowly I find solace in this seemingly never-ending loop of progressive defeat as each attempt brings me closer to my goal. To knock this deadly menace down once and for all.

And that’s when the realization hit me like a freight train. This is one hell of a game. Ten years have passed since I first beat Bloodborne, and it is a game that I find myself coming back to time after time. And it’s not just because it’s so damn good, but because in the many years that have passed since – we haven’t seen anything quite like it.

Sure, we have seen developers trying to capture the essence of Bloodborne with games like Lies of P or Thymesia. FromSoftware has expanded its Souls formula to the open world and beyond with Elden Ring, but there’s nothing that scratches the same itch quite like Bloodborne. But what is it that FromSoftware and Miyazaki have done that makes it so unique, so special?

Well, there are plenty of reasons as to why that is the case but chief among them has to be the art direction. FromSoftware has been a pioneer when it comes to designing dystopian worlds that are striking to look at, but the Victorian London-inspired town of Yharnam ranks as one of its best works to date. It’s a unique blend of H.P. Lovecraft and Victorian-era London, and the best way to describe this twisted world is the culmination of your worst nightmares coming true.

Tall arching clock towers populate the skyline, dense settlements dotted with turned villagers, and a blood-red moon makes you uneasy at the core. Enemies are outright daunting to look at, especially non-human enemies like werewolves or tentacular monsters in particular. Drools of blood and nasty saliva can be seen at the ends of sharp teeth, blades and weapons get covered in enemy blood.

The weird deformations of bosses like Cleric Beast or Ludwig are almost beyond comprehension, giving the art direction a rather dreamy feeling which is perfect considering we are indeed a part of a Hunter’s Nightmare. But what’s really interesting about this world is that even in times of extreme peril, there are pockets of hope scattered throughout. You might come across a little girl waiting for a father to come back home, or maybe even come across a serene view that will have you gawking at it for a good few minutes.

Bloodborne’s expert usage of a darker color palette dominated by shades of black, grey, and purple gives it a unique visual identity that fits its vibe and the gameplay. The game also trades geographical variety for consistency. Unlike the developers’ prior works where the adventure takes you through giant castles to mystical forests and underground swamps, Yharnam is more restrained and grounded giving it a more believable look. Of course, the looping level design that is at the heart of these games is present in spades – making exploration a constantly enjoyable and rewarding experience as you discover new shortcuts and connecting paths.

Horror in Bloodborne doesn’t just come from the dark visuals or fierce creature design, it’s present in the beating heart of the game. Much like FromSoftware’s past works, Bloodborne is a demanding game with a steep learning curve and little hand-holding. Right from the start, you are put up against a fight with a werewolf with nothing but your bare hands – setting the right example for what’s to follow.

Bloodborne excels at providing a sense of mechanical fear. You don’t just fear how the enemy looks, but also how it functions. Enemies move in an erratic fashion, stunning you with heavy hits and following up with a flurry of attacks that can knock you down without much effort. They also hide around corners waiting for opportunities to ambush you at unsuspecting parts of the map, which in turn forces you to carefully trot through claustrophobic corridors and inviting tunnels.

Mistakes here can be quite costly, as every death will knock you back to the last lamp with all your XP (or Blood Echoes as Bloodborne calls it) lost at the spot where you died. These lamp posts and checkpoints are also scattered quite far apart, and there’s a palpable sense of tension pervading each step when you are running low on supplies and thousands of precious Blood Echoes are at stake.

No Souls game is complete without a good selection of bosses, and Bloodborne obviously doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Right from Father Gasgione to Vicar Amelia to Gehrman, Bloodborne’s suite of bosses is a pure test of mettle where you are pushed to the breaking point time after time again. While there are more average bosses in the base game as I would have liked, the game makes up for it with the Old Hunters DLC. Orphan of Kos will have you throwing controllers, Lady Maria is a graceful hunter who will knock you down pretty quickly, and Ludwig’s Moonlight Sword attacks will leave you speechless. Chef’s kiss, to be honest.

What makes Bloodborne so special is also how it has a wonderful sense of flow to its gameplay. The careful dance of dodging and attacking that players need to master has its unique rhythm, and the game gives you some leeway with the ability to regain lost health by attacking back at your enemies in quick succession after getting hit. Blood vials are the supplies that replenish your health, and instead of being refueled at checkpoints – they can be purchased at a shop and dropped by regular enemies.

This is a very important design decision that changes how you view the game. In Dark Souls, you could only make a set number of mistakes before you run out of flasks – but here, that budget for making mistakes is much bigger. Once you master the aforementioned dance of strikes, you can maintain that rhythm much longer, and explore more areas aided with a regular replenishing of your vials.

The best form of design is minimalistic, and Bloodborne is a game that adheres to this school of thought. It’s an RPG at its core where arbitrary stats and numbers decide much of what you can and can’t do, but it strips down the complexities of stat management and builds crafting to a much lower level which makes the core gameplay a lot more enjoyable.

Weapons in Bloodborne aren’t a dime a dozen, and you wouldn’t find a zillion armor sets or magic spells scattered around every corner. It’s quite convenient to start with a certain weapon and continue upgrading that particular build and related stats without feeling underpowered at any point in the journey. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any options for trying out new builds or experimenting with your character, but the needless clutter around build crafting and upgrades has been simplified – making interactions with the core gameplay loop much more meaningful this time around.

As can be deferred from these discussions, a lot of what makes Bloodborne so special and so unique is the precision in the designs. Be it the flawless art direction or the rhythmic nature of its gameplay, the design elements at play work extremely well with one another resulting in a game that rarely falters in terms of quality. It’s very clear that FromSoftware knew what it wanted this game to be, and it inculcated everything that would make that vision come true while stripping away all unnecessary clutter that didn’t contribute to that vision.

It’s almost poetry at motion at times, and it stands tall as one of the best games of the last generation. Countless rumors and reports have pointed that a remaster, a sequel or a port has been in the works – but nothing concrete has come out since then. And that’s a shame because Bloodborne is the perfect candidate for such a treatment considering its age and the faithful community of fans.

We have seen games like The Last of Us or Until Dawn being remastered or outright remade for PS5 and PC, but nothing of the same sort has been done for Bloodborne. Not only would the world of Yharnam get a fresh coat of paint with a remaster, but the combat loop would also benefit greatly from a higher framerate. But, I guess all these requests are falling on Sony’s deaf ears.

One can only hope, however. Bloodborne is definitely a game that you should try out if you haven’t already. The Souls series might have moved forward to greener pastures, but Bloodborne offers an experience like no other.

Whether it's excellent combat, top-notch story-telling, extensive build-crafting, or all three, these action RPGs deliver the goods.

Role-playing game fans have had it pretty good over the years, and among the many flourishing sub-genres, action RPGs have consistently offered some of the best experiences. Even with the many titles integrating RPG mechanics into their makeup – be it through loot chases or stats – there are plenty of standouts. Check out our picks for the 30 best action RPGs of all time, starting with:

30. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Don’t Nod’s second major action RPG, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden was released early last year, and it turned out to be a way better experience than Vampyr. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden was an excellent action role playing game with plenty to do with story being its main focus. Throughout the game’s narrative, players would have to make tough decisions which can result in any of the five endings.

Shuhei Yoshida revealed that Miyazaki might just be too busy to work on Bloodborne, with PlayStation wanting to respect his wishes.

While rumours and speculation for a potential remaster or sequel to one of FromSoftware’s most critically-acclaimed titles, Bloodborne, have been swirling around for quite some time now, both Sony and FromSoftware have been quiet about the game. Former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida believes that the reason for the lack of any new Bloodborne-related announcement might just be a lack of time.

In a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Yoshida mentions that, while he doesn’t know what the situation surrounding Bloodborne is, the lack of any new announcement or game might just come down to the fact that Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki might just not have the time to work on it.

“I have only my personal theory to that situation,” explained Yoshida in the interview, which you can watch below. “I left first party so I don’t know what’s going on, but my theory is… Miyazaki-san really loved Bloodborne, you know, what he created. So I think he is interested but he’s so successful and he’s so busy, so he… cannot do it himself, but he does not want anyone else to touch it.”

Yoshida also stated that, since PlayStation has avoided bringing it up because it wants to respect Miyazaki’s wishes. “So that’s my guess, theory,” said Yoshida. “I am not revealing any secret information, just to be clear.”

Back in 2024, Miyazaki had also spoken about Bloodborne, and how important the IP was to FromSoftware. However, Miyazaki also mentioned that just having new hardware wasn’t the be-all and end-all reason to make a new game, and that accessibility would be a bigger concern.

Interestingly, in an interview with IGN from back in 2024, Miyazaki also indicated that, while he would love to work on a new Bloodborne title, the ball might not be in FromSoftware’s hands. In the interview, Miyazaki stated that FromSoftware doesn’t own the IP, and that the studio isn’t at liberty to talk about the game.

“Unfortunately, and I’ve said this in other interviews, it’s not my place to talk about Bloodborne specifically,” he said. “We simply don’t own the IP at FromSoftware. For me personally, it was a great project, and I have a lot of great memories for that game, but we’re not at liberty to speak to it. I’m very sorry about that.”

Miyazaki had also indicated that it’s not up to him for Bloodborne to get ported to PC, and indicated that saying he wants it to happen would get him in trouble. “I know for a fact these guys want a Bloodborne PC port,” he said in an interview with PCGamer last year. “If I say I want one, I’ll get in trouble as well. But it’s nothing I’m opposed to.”

Rumours from October have indicated that a new title related to Bloodborne might be in the works. Details on this title, however, are scarce, and we don’t yet know if it will be a remaster, a remake, a sequel, or if it even exists in the first place.

The last time we got to see anything related to Bloodborne was in Astro Bot, where references to the game were included as part of a celebration of PlayStation titles.

Currently, Bloodborne is only available on the PS4. PS5 players can play the game through backwards compatibility. Here are our thoughts for why we might never get a PS5 remake or remaster of Bloodborne.
