Darksiders would be perfect for Switch.

While Darksiders, both the older games as well as the more recent Darksiders 3, are available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, Nintendo’s Switch sadly remains a Darksiders-free zone. Sadly, because the games, which are Zelda-like in structure, and which were on Wii U and did reasonably well there (as well as any game could on Wii U, anyway), would probably go down well with the Switch audience.

Apparently, publisher THQ Nordic might agree with that sentiment. Today on Twitter, THQ Nordic and the official Darksiders account engaged in a little skit in response to a fan suggestion that the game might come to the Switch, implying that the series may in fact be headed to Nintendo’s hardware.

It’s just a tease, and not even an explicit one, and assuming there is any substance to it, we don’t even know what to expect—just the first game? The first two games? Just the third game? All three games? For now, this is just speculation, but I guess keep your eye out for a Darksiders on Switch announcement in the coming months.

Man, Asia PS Plus gets all the god stuff...

It’s no news that PS Plus has sucked on the PS4, ever since it became mandatory to play online. And while Sony is making some strides in improving the lineup of free games that they offer of late, on the whole, things are still not as good as they used to be on the PS3 and PS Vita.

Of course, this is unless you live in Asia, where Sony routinely puts up its best games on offer for subscribers. For example, PS+ subscribers in Asia have been treated to another, damn good game- Darksiders 2: Warmastered Edition. So, again, Sony is putting the better foot forward for Asia, and the rest of the world is left with… well, okay, the games we’ve gotten the last few months have admittedly been great, so I won’t complain any more.

That said, let’s hope that Sony strives to achieve parity with its services and offerings on a global level and basis soon.

Become death on the Xbox 360 (for free).

Vigil Games’ Darksiders 2 is now available for free on the Xbox 360 to Xbox Live Gold members via the Games With Gold initiative. You can download it here.

Darksiders 2 sort of follows up on the original. It’s actually a prequel to the first game and sees you playing as another Horseman of the Apocalypse – Death. You’ll be working to clear War’s name, navigating an enormous open world and bashing enemies left and right while earning sweet loot. Though it didn’t live up to its initial budget, Darksiders 2 is still one of the more compelling action adventure games one can play.

Interestingly, it seems that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is still available to download for free on the Xbox 360. We’ll see how long this lasts but overall, you can currently download two big-name AAA titles for free. That’s a good deal if ever we’ve seen one. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.

October’s Games With Gold on Xbox Live includes a relatively new IP with Frima’s Chariot available for free on the Xbox One. As an ID@Xbox title, it will replace Super Time Force when October begins.

The heavy hitters on the Xbox 360 though. From October 1st, Xbox Live Gold subscribers on the Xbox 360 will be able to download Battlefield: Bad Company 2. It will be available up until the 15th – the very next day, Vigil Games’ Darksiders 2 will be available for free until October 31st. Considering that both games have garnered a good amount of critical appreciation – besides Battlefield: Bad Company 2 having arguably the best campaign in the series till date – this is an excellent deal.

Things will begin heating up for the Xbox One as Forza Horizon 2 debuts on September 30th and Sunset Overdrive is out next month. What are your thoughts on the Xbox One at this point? Let us know in the comments.

Believes a similar product could be created for less.

Vigil Games’ Darksiders 2 was an interesting follow-up to the original – it didn’t have the same mechanics and actually emphasized puzzle-solving and reflexive combat over the original’s action adventure approach. It wasn’t a success sadly and Nordic Games CEO Lars Wingefors, who now owns the IP, reveals why.

Speaking to MCV, he stated that, “Darksiders is a top product. THQ spent $50 million making Darksiders 2. We can produce a product of the same quality but for a lower cost. $50 million is ridiculous. I can’t afford that.”

So unless Darksiders 2 was an exceptional product, there was no way it was going to recoup all of that money.

Regardless, Wingefors believes picking up the IP and several others from THQ was a good idea. “The THQ deal was the best I ever made. I spent $5 million from my own bank account. It was a lot of money for me, but we got the money back very quickly.”

Darksiders may return in the near future with Gunfire Games, composed of several ex-Vigil Games members, exploring the possibility.

Series designer Joe Madureira promises "exciting news about the franchise soon".

Before THQ went bankrupt, one of its many big franchises included Vigil Games’ Darksiders. The series never achieved the financial success it was supposed to, especially with Darksiders 2, but it always had a great niche appeal to it. Now that the IP belongs to Nordic Games, one would think we’d never see a new Darksiders title.

However, series designer Joe Madureira indicated differently. Posting on Facebook, Madureira told fans that, “Darksiders– DS is not dead! The new owner, Nordic seems very committed to continuing the series. As far as my involvement, I can’t say at this point. Hopefully we will all have exciting news about the franchise soon!”

We know that the Darksiders franchise will see the original two games released as part of a collection pack with the DLC included. But Darksiders 3? We’ll really have to wait for more details on that. Would you like to see a third game happen though? Let us know in the comments.

We look back on how, among other things, 2012 was defined by its range of disappointments.

It’s that time of the year again where we look back and introspect, along with fearing the fake apocalypse about to come our way (because nothing makes it more real like fear). 2012 has been a very interesting year for gaming, in that we’ve seen some tried-and-true franchises ply their yearly wares, while some new titles and relatively younger franchises took center stage. Telltale Games is perhaps the best example. Though Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Slender were both stellar efforts, The Walking Dead Episodes single-handedly revived interest in the adventure gaming genre. But really, the series was a testament to the fact that if you make a good game with a good story, people will buy it. Arkane Studios also made quite the mark with Dishonored, their fantasy steam punk first person stealth action hybrid something-something. The length was disappointing according to some but it was still a stellar experience. Borderlands 2 cemented its place in our treasure-hoarding, quest-driven, gun-accruing souls, and it was beautiful. X-COM: Enemy Unknown, Persona 4: Golden, Mark of the Ninja, Xenoblade Chronicles, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Dragon’s Dogma, Torchlight 2, and many other relatively low-key titles also got their time to shine this year.

However the year was dominated by the big guns. Vigil Games’ Darksiders 2, Capcom’s Resident Evil 6, IO Interactive’s Hitman: Absolution, 343 Industries’ Halo 4, Ubisoft Montreal’s Assassin’s Creed 3 and Far Cry 3, Bioware’s Mass Effect 3, Warren Spector’s Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Danger Close’s Medal of Honor: Warfighter and of course, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo 3. And hilariously enough, almost each one of these titles managed to disappoint in some way or another.

Some more so than others with their overall quality (which did nothing to impede their sales); some by the annoying amount of bugs that, weeks after release, still haven’t been cleared up; and some for the most juvenile, inane reasons possible. Oh, and there were those “purists” who found fault with Halo 4 initially but have since come around (regardless, “multiplayer brah!”). Plus, Diablo 3, which makes EA look like a cuddly koala when it comes to dealing with customers (among other issues pre- and post-release).

Let’s start with the inane: Mass Effect 3’s ending controversy. Essentially, gamers were disappointed that Mass Effect 3 didn’t have a cookie cutter, “happy ending”. This, despite Bioware leaving clues throughout the series indicating it would be anything but. Otherwise, Mass Effect 3 is a stellar game, and arguably one that deserves the mantle of “Game of the Year” more than its immediate contenders.

And now on to the guilty ones: Resident Evil 6. Seriously, Capcom? You try to shove every single gameplay aspect and action-packed sequence into the game, with cut scenes after every few seconds, saddle it with a needlessly complicated control scheme, pad the game till it’s fluffier than a fluffer on a seedy 80’s film set, cook up a stupid story that effectively retcons every virus out there while somehow creating one that does it all, and you expect people to buy it? Well, hell, were you right as RE6 shipped 4.5 million copies worldwide three days after release.

Not that they were the only ones to pad their games with weary mechanics and awful pacing, interspersed with ho-hum shooting. Medal of Honor: Warfighter, developed by Danger Close and published by EA, finally showed us what happened when the Call of Duty formula became too stale (honestly though, they didn’t do as great a job as Black Ops 2). Yet somehow, Danger Close created not only a terrible game but one that was worse than RE6. How, in the name of the Lord, do you do THAT?

Surprisingly enough, despite just being released, Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two is receiving a fair amount of critical backlash. The game itself has been criticized for an overall lack of fun, despite the attention to detail. Seriously, who saw that coming?

While the there have been some terrible games released in the year, they arguably pale in comparison to the buggy ones. Hitman: Absolution, Assassin’s Creed 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are some of the worst offenders. Look for the number of fixes on AC3’s recent Thanksgiving patch, and you’ll be shocked to discover just how many things have been fixed for multi-player alone. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 continues the series infamous run of only working on the Xbox 360, delivering near unplayable experiences to both PS3 and PC gamers. Hell, even with fixes, the game looked horrible on PS3, clipping extensively and bugging out to no end. At least Hitman: Absolution’s major crimes were a few clipping bugs and disguises being seen through too quickly. It still delivered an awesome experience in stealth and action – though a lot of critics say otherwise.

Darksiders 2 is perhaps the most intriguing case. Despite being bigger and more expansive than the first game, it didn’t live up to expectations. Truth be told, its multitude of elements just failed to click together – and it turned previous Darksiders fans away with its emphasis on “Zelda meets Prince of Persia meets Devil May Cry”. Not the worst game in the world by a long shot, but still one that fell short in its vision and sales.

There’s not really much to say about Diablo 3. Honestly, nothing at all. We swear.

It’s hard to say which the most disappointing game of the year was (though we know the most forgettable – Final Fantasy XIII-2. Zing!). Nearly every big name disappointed in its own way, whether by design or public backlash. What else can you say but “better luck next year”, “play test your games, please” and “Go away forever, Capcom”?

The failure of such big names coincided with the ever-increased pressure AAA developers are under to deliver. Even if it’s buggy, even in the name of simplifying a major franchise for the masses, even if your fans might not like the ending and even if you’ve really got nothing worthy to deliver, you must ship. Under-deliver or over-deliver – just ship on time and cater to the lowest common denominator. We’ll see how well that pans out in the coming year where many of the big names release in the first half of the year itself.

That does look really menacing.

The first thing you thought when seeing the title was Diablo 3, didn’t you? Because the name is so synonymous with that franchise, as it contains a lot of demons and what not. However, Darksiders 2 will get a DLC where you can fight the demon lord Belial and it already looks well designed than the one in Diablo 3.

The DLC will be available for 800 MS Points on Xbox Live and $9.99 on PSN and is scheduled to released on December 4. Yes I am aware of the fact that I made this news on the same day, so what are you waiting for? If you loved Darksiders 2 then you have to get this because it looks awesome.

Death, the main protagonist of the game, will face a lot of sinister enemies and also encounter the last remnants of humanity. If you purchased the season pass, this DLC is included.

“Little has been said of the struggles on Earth besides the story given to WAR by the Charred Council. Rumors have now surfaced that perhaps the Third Kingdom was not completely destroyed, and remnants of humanity still yet survive! It falls upon Death to seek out the truth and unearth a forgotten evil… The Demon Lord Belial,” reads the press release.

We reviewed Darksiders 2 and gave it a glowing score.

The Wii U is out now and the line-up is looking strong.

It’s that special day. Remember when we looked at the Wii U on it’s announcement and wondered what kind of odd little miracles it would deliver? No one could have counted on there being this many big-name titles on launch, but there it is. New Super Mario Bros U is getting good critical reception (which sadly can’t be said for Ubisoft’s ZombiU) but there’s tons more where that came from.

Vigil Games’ Darksiders 2, featuring tons of additional content, including past DLC packs; Namco-Bandai’s Tekken Tag Tournament 2, a solid outing for the franchise with it’s own Nintendo-themed costumes; Electronic Arts’ FIFA 13, which sold less copies in 4 weeks than Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 did in one day; and Activision’s Skylanders: Giants.

How ’bout them Skylanders: Giants then?

Anyway, the Wii U is out now and the list of exclusives is only going to get larger as Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101 and more make their way to the consoles in the coming months.

Death returns with an even greater vengeance than before.

We’ve talked about THQ’s declining fortunes, the overall low sales of the second Darksiders title, the grim future of the company and much more. But that doesn’t change the fact that Darksiders 2 is coming to the Wii U and still looks to be a damn fine game, even with the translation to a more “family-friendly” console.

Angels and demons are still warring over the pieces of the apocalypse’s aftermath, and Death still has to prove his brother War’s innocence by traversing to different worlds. In between, Death will need to resolve the spirits of the Nephilim and perhaps cut a giant or three down to size. The Wii U edition promises tons of extra content, along with previously released DLC and until-now unreleased director’s cut gameplay so it should be worth the wait when it releases on the Wii U on November 18th for North America and November 30th for Australia and Europe.
