The acclaimed enhanced edition, which features new character stories, an orchestral soundtrack, and more, is finally Switch 2-bound.

The “Update From the Dragon Quest Team” stream is minutes away, but Square Enix has already started the anniversary festivities by announcing a Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Launching on September 24th, it’s a port of the critically acclaimed RPG’s enhanced edition.

That includes new character scenarios, an optional 2D mode that plays more like the retro Dragon Quest games of yore, Japanese voice-acting, and even an orchestral version of the soundtrack (though you can still listen to the original). Switch 2 players can also choose between two graphical modes, prioritizing visual fidelity or the frame rate as they see fit. Fair warning, though: The physical edition comes with a Game-Key Card.

Coupled with the already massive base game, Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age offers 90 hours of story and side content, and even more for completionists. You can check our review of the original here for more details, or play the enhanced version on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch today.

As for the future, Square Enix could finally be revealing some new details on Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, the next mainline entry in the franchise. Very little was known until now, aside from its development on Unreal Engine 5, so stay tuned for updates.

Weekly Shonen Jump will feature an announcement from Square Enix on the franchise.

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age released last year in the West to strong critical acclaim. While it seemed like the next game would be a ways off, Square Enix seems to have some Dragon Quest-related announcement coming up. This will be in the Weekly Shonen Jump on June 10th.

If that date sounds familiar, it’s because Square Enix has an E3 broadcast planned for the same day. Whether this is the next game in the mainline series, or a spin-off like Dragon Quest Builders, remains to be seen. Either way, it should be an interesting day for fans.

Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age is out now for PS4 and PC in the West. It will also be coming to the Nintendo Switch as Dragon Quest 11 S. Along with a 2D mode, it will also have new story content (which may not necessarily be available on other platforms).

The Switch version holds up surprisingly well, though the PS4 version obviously looks far better.

We finally got to see Dragon Quest 11 S, the Nintendo Switch version of the excellent JRPG that has been a long time coming. What we saw looked good—it was basically the same game as the PS4 version, but on the Switch. The PS4 version has a striking art style realized in Unreal Engine 4, and seeing it brought to life on Switch as is was impressive.

A new video, courtesy of Twinfinite, compares footage from the Switch version with the PS4 version. Side by side, it becomes apparent that the Switch version is (obviously) not exactly as good looking as the PS4 version is. Barring one example where the Switch version seems to have better mid-range draw distance when the hero is out on the overworld, the Switch version very clearly has poorer textures, poorer lighting, and poorer shadows. How much this bothers you will come down to your own tolerance for these kinds of things. However, I personally feel the Switch version holds up remarkably well given it is running on what is essentially a tablet.

Dragon Quest 11 S launches on Nintendo Switch next year in Japan; the game is also available now on PC, PS4, and in Japan only, on Nintendo 3DS.

Square Enix takes the wraps off of the mysterious Switch version of Dragon Quest 11 at long last.

Though Dragon Quest 11 was the very first game announced for the Nintendo Switch, back when it was still known as the Nintendo NX, we so far have seen absolutely nothing of it.

We had been promised that the game would be at Jump Festa this year, and true to their words, Square Enix brought the game there. And, at long last, they took the wraps off of the Switch version of Dragon Quest 11.

You can see the first trailer for the game for yourself below. It’s essentially the same as the PS4 version, though during the unveiling, Square Enix claimed that the whole game had been made from the ground up for the Switch. The big thing here for Japanese audiences is voice acting—thus far, no Dragon Quest game in Japan has had that (though of course, Dragon Quest 11’s English localization did have VA).

Beyond that, we don’t know a whole lot about the Switch version. We do get a release window, at least for Japan, and that’s 2019. Hopefully, a western release won’t be too far behind, especially since the actual localization work is mostly done. Square Enix has also promised more information on the game come January 1, 2019–which is next week.

Dragon Quest 11 is out now on PS4 and PC, and in Japan only, Nintendo 3DS.
