Square Enix confirms an additional 2 million units sold since September 2024, when it released for Xbox Series X/S.

Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth may have been slapped with the “commercial underperformer” labels, but the series is still enjoying success elsewhere. Specifically, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster has hit another major sales milestone.

Taking to Twitter, Square Enix recently announced that Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster has now sold over 5 million units worldwide across all platforms. That’s up from 3 million units sold as of September last year. Interestingly enough, the remaster collection released for Xbox Series X/S at the end of that month, so presumably, it has performed well on Microsoft’s platform, having seen an additional 2 million sales since then- though of course, it will have continued to sell on other platforms as well.

Meanwhile, Square Enix has also revealed that the Final Fantasy series has collectively sold over 200 million units worldwide.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is available on Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.

The Pixel Remasters of Final Fantasy 1 to 6 are available individually and in a bundle for a discounted price of $59.99.

As rumored last week, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series is coming to Xbox Series X/S and the Microsoft Store for PC players. It’s actually out now, with each title available separately or in a bundle for $74.99 (currently discounted to $59.99). Check out the announcement trailer below.

Final Fantasy 1 and 2 cost $11.99, while the remaining titles retail for $17.99, though each is also on sale. Each remaster features updated pixel sprites and visuals alongside a “modern” user interface with different fonts (including the classic style). New features like auto-battle, turning off random battles, increasing XP gain, and more are also available.

There’s even an optional rearranged soundtrack (complete with a music player), a Beastiary for checking out all the enemies, and a gallery for viewing illustrations. Of course, each remaster has some interesting self-contained features, like Final Fantasy 6’s revamped Opera Scene.

However, Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster are planned for Microsoft's consoles, it's claimed.

When Square Enix announced Final Fantasy 14 for Xbox Series X/S last year, it said it also intended to bring other titles to Microsoft’s consoles down the line, which many assumed meant other major Final Fantasy releases that have skipped Xbox in recent years, from Final Fantasy 16 to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series. As per recent reports, however, though some of them definitely are in the works for Xbox, others aren’t.

Journalist Jez Corden recently claimed on the Xbox Two podcast that “the whole slate” of Final Fantasy titles is set to come to Xbox Series X/S- specifically, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Final Fantasy 16, and Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster.

Since then, however, others have offered somewhat conflicting details. On ResetEra, prominent leaker NateTheHate has corroborated that Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster and Final Fantasy 16 are indeed coming to Xbox, with the former being the more immediate release”, and that support is planned to “extend beyond just Final Fantasy stuff”.

The leaker did not, however, mention the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, while VG247’s Alex Donaldson has also claimed on the forum that based on what he’s heard, Xbox versions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth aren’t currently in development.

Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has previously suggested that after its upcoming PC release, Final Fantasy 16 will also come to Xbox Series X/S, which multiple leaks have also claimed. How soon after that the company will bring Remake and Rebirth to Microsoft’s consoles remains to be seen, but for now, it doesn’t look like that’s something that’s being actively worked on. Either way, Xbox players do have Final Fantasy content to look forward to, so there’s that.

Players can also use BGM Source to select between the special arrangement or original versions of tracks and pause during combat.

Despite launching nearly three years ago, Square Enix has updated the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series on PC to have the same quality-of-life features as the PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions.

These include assistance features for increasing the amount of EXP or Gil earned, turning off enemy encounters and a BGM Source option for selecting between a track’s special arrangement or the original tune. If that weren’t enough, you can choose between the remasters’ Modern font or the Classic font from the original releases.

Other worthwhile options include switching the default movement speed from walking to running, pausing the menu during exploration and combat to change controls, and more. Players can also fight against any monster from the Bestiary (based on your most recent save). Adjustments have also been made to the graphics and sound effects. Check out the full patch notes below.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster consists of remasters for Final Fantasy 1 to 6. It’s available for PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android, with three million copies sold as of September 2023.

> It is now possible to use holding down the right stick or the F3 key as a shortcut command for switching between encounters

A “BGM source” option has been added to the config screen. This allows you to select between the special “arrangement” BGM made for this version of the game or the “original” versions in the style of the original game. In addition, both versions of the music can be listened to from the sound player.

A “Font type” option has been added to the config screen. This allows you to select between the “modern” font made for this version of the game or the “classic” font in the style of the original game.

Additions and alterations to game menus

It is now possible to load saved data from the menu screen.

It is now possible to open the pause menu while travelling or during battle. You can also return to the title screen or check control settings from the pause menu.
An option to switch movement speeds has been added to the config. screen. This allows you to switch

the default movement speed from walking to running. Holding down the cancel button while moving will move characters at the other speed not set as the default.
> It is also possible to switch between movements speeds using the F1 key or holding down the left stick as a short cut.

It is now possible to view the monster bestiary from the in-game config menu

The remastered collection of Final Fantasy 1-6 was first released in July 2021. It's available for PC, iOS, Android, PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster has achieved a significant milestone since launching in July 2021 for PC and mobile. It’s sold three million units across all platforms, including the recent PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions.

How the sales break down per game is unknown, but considering its last milestone was May 2023, with over two million copies sold, this is pretty good growth. Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster consists of remasters for Final Fantasy 1 to 6, with updated sprites, a rearranged soundtrack (with the original still available) and a new pixel font in addition to the old one.

You can also turn off random battles and increase the XP gain, making it easier to focus on the story. Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster retails for $74.99, but you can pick up the first two games for $11.99 each and Final Fantasy 3-6 for $17.99 each. Such is the success of the collection that Square is “considering” ideas for other Pixel Remasters in the future, though nothing has been announced yet.

Though the company has nothing specific to share yet, following Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster's success, it's looking at other older games that could do with similar treatment.

Over the last couple of years, in bits and pieces, slow yet surely, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection has launched for a number of platforms, bringing modernized and updated versions of the first six Final Fantasy games to modern platforms. And in the wake of the critical and commercial success it has enjoyed, it seems Square Enix is considering similar pixel remasters for other older titles in its back catalog as well.

Recently during a Q&A session with shareholders (via VGC) when asked if Square Enix had plans for more pixel remasters after Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster’s success (with Xenogears in particular being named as an example by the person asking the question), a member of the company’s board said that while there were no specific details announced yet, Square Enix is “considering various ideas” on that front.

“We will refrain from sharing information about new titles, but we are considering various ideas within the company and hope that you will look forward to forthcoming announcements,” the board member said.

There will, of course, be no shortage of beloved older titles in Square Enix’s library of games that fans would love to see modernizations of, and with the company investing so heavily in both remasters and HD-2D remakes, there’s a good chance that several will be seeing the light of day in the coming years. Or one would hpe, at least.

In May, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster had sold over 2 millon units worldwide across all platforms. Read more on that through here.

Square Enix's remasters of Final Fantasy 1 to 6 launched on PC, iOS and Android, and more recently for PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series has proven successful since first launching in July 2021 for PC, iOS and Android. It’s sold over two million units worldwide, per the publisher (via Gamer.ne.jp). It didn’t break down the sales for each game specifically.

As the name indicates, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster consists of remasters for Final Fantasy 1 to 6. It includes revamped visuals that stick close to the originals’ sprites, a rearranged orchestral soundtrack, options for turning off random battles and increasing XP earned, and more. There’s also a new pixel font, though the old one is still available.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster recently launched for PS4 and Nintendo Switch, but again, Square Enix didn’t reveal how much these versions sold. Each title is available separately, with Final Fantasy 1 and 2 costing $11.99 each, while Final Fantasy 3-6 costs $17.99 each. The entire collection is also available for $74.99 as a bundle.

The entire bundle collectively will require 5.7 GB of free storage space, with the largest game being Final Fantasy 6 at 1.3 GB.

While the wait for Final Fantasy 16 continues, fans of the franchise on Switch and PlayStation will soon have the opportunity to go back to some of its earliest entries with the looming launch of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. Ahead of its release, courtesy of updated Switch eShop pages, the file sizes of each of the games on Nintendo’s platform have also been revealed.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, i.e. the whole collection altogether, will require 5.7 GB of free storage space, which is pretty modest (unsurprisingly), while storage requirements for each individual game are even less demanding, with Final Fantasy 2 being the smallest of the lot and Final Fantasy 6 the biggest.

Final Fantasy 1 will require 612 MB, Final Fantasy 2 will require 601 MB, Final Fantasy 3 and 4 will both require 734 MB each, Final Fantasy 5 will require 974 MB, and Final Fantasy 6 will require 1.3 GB.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is releasing for Nintendo Switch and PS4 on April 19. It is also available on PC, iOS, and Android. If you’re waiting for it to eventually also release for Xbox, based on recent developments, we’d advice you to not hold your breath.
