Shooting elements are reportedly “planned”, but the classic graffiti-tagging gameplay is intact. It’s an open-world title, as confirmed by Sega previously, and focuses on exploration with a new story and characters. Like Crazy Taxi, there are plans for remaking the first Jet Set Radio before the live service reboot launches.

Sega hasn’t officially announced the same nor indicated when these titles could launch. Rumors claim that Jet Set Radio’s reboot will arrive in 2026, followed by Crazy Taxi in 2027, and both are bound for the Nintendo Switch 2. Stay tuned for more updates and details in the coming months.

Both Crazy Taxi and Jet Set are live service games that are also having remakes before reboots release. Jet Set is closer in gameplay to Fortnite than Crazy Taxi and there are shooting elements planned.

Twitter user @MbKKssTBhz5 (a.k.a. Midori) – a prominent leaker who has accurately leaked several Sega (specifically, Atlus) announcements – has claimed that the new Jet Set Radio game is set to launch sometime in 2026, while Crazy Taxi is currently scheduled for 2027. On top of that, Midori also claims that both games will also release for Nintendo’s rumoured next-gen console, which is allegedly due out in the second half of this year.

As per the leaker, both are reboots, not remakes (something Sega has officially clarified as well), though interestingly, Midori claims that both remakes and reboots were in the works at Sega for both Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi. Whether that’s still the case or if remakes for both properties have been shelved is unclear.

Meanwhile, the leaker also adds that the Jet Set Radio will tell a completely new story, and will feature both new and returning characters, while Crazy Taxi will supposedly feature “online elements” (which would align with what past leaks have claimed). Meanwhile in a separate tweet, they claimed that it’s being developed on Unreal Engine, which isn’t information Sega has officially shared yet.

As officially confirmed by Sega, Jet Set Radio is going to be an open world game, while Crazy Taxi’s setting has been described as a “fusion of nature and city”.

Sega is currently also working on reboots for Golden Axe and Shinobi, while a new 3D Streets of Rage game called Streets of Rage Revolution is also in the works. As per leaks, at least five additional reboot projects that haven’t yet been announced are also in development at Sega.

The new Jet Set Radio game is not a remake. The game is a reboot that will be released in 2026.

Crazy Taxi also had a remake and reboot initiative. And Crazy Taxi is planned for 2027 release right now.

Chief among the tidbits shared on Jet Set Radio is the fact that, as many anticipated, it’s going to be an open world experience. The information was shared by Sega alongside a single new screenshot of the game (which you can view below), which also says that players will “experience the ‘rebellion movement that feels free in a suffocating society” and “make friends, increase your fans, and create a movement”.

New details have also been shared on reboots for Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, and Golden Axe, while Sega has also confirmed that the next Streets of Rage game will be called Streets of Rage Revolution.

Past leaks have claimed that the Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi reboots are going to employ live service elements, though until now, Sega has given no indication as to whether or not that will be the case.

“In recent years, Sonic the Hedgehog has forged new paths for Sega, bringing the franchise to life and reaching new audiences in ways we had only dreamed of in the past,” said Co-COO of Sega Corporation and CEO of Sega of America Shuji Utsumi. “Building off that success, we are digging into our legacy and reimagining several franchises to bring these games to more audiences around the globe.”

Utsumi’s statement goes on to talk about how this is only the beginning for Sega.

“Today’s announcement is just the start of our initiative. First and foremost, our ambition will be to create great games with memorable characters and worlds. We hope fans of all ages will look towards our future with anticipation as we release these projects in the coming years.”

During its announcement at The Game Awards 2023, Sega confirmed that new games in the Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi are in development. The studio also announced new games for even older franchises, including Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe.

Sega recently released Sonic Superstars, which it had described as a new take on the classic 2D Sonic formula. Released back in October, Sonic Superstars has seemingly seen a weaker start than Sega had anticipated. Previously, the company had released Sonic Frontiers, which was quite successful and saw a host of content being released through post-launch updates.

The footage below allegedly originates from an internal reel that was showcased at Sega to exhibit in-development games in 2021, and also includes bits and pieces of footage from Sonic Frontiers, which is now out. Interestingly, the Sonic Frontiers footage shows the on-screen enemy using a different moveset from the one it has in the game.

What’s more, the potential domain of the alleged Persona 3 remake also seems to have been discovered- it’s p3re.jp, and it seems to be registered to the same domain provider as p5r.jp, which, of course, is the domain for Persona 5 Royal. Meanwhile, in its own reporting Gematsu has stated that though it cannot verify this recent leaked footage, it can corroborate that a Persona 3 remake has been in development at Atlus for “several years”.

As mentioned earlier, this isn’t the first we’ve heard of either of these two rumoured games. Leaks claimed earlier this year that Atlus was working on a full-fledged remake of Persona 3, and that it would be unveiled this Summer. Meanwhile, last year, it was reported that Sega was working on a “big budget” reboot of Jet Set Radio, potentially featuring live service elements.

Crazy Taxi has reportedly been in development for more than a year with Sega aiming for a release two to three years down the line, according to unnamed sources. However, sources noted that both it and Jet Set Radio are still in the early stages and could very well be cancelled. A spokesperson for the company offered no comment on the report.

Interestingly, both titles are apparently aiming for a Fortnite-style model with “recurring revenue sources” and to foster online communities. Though NFTs weren’t mentioned for either, Sega producer Masayoshi Kikuchi did previously say it’s “natural for the future of games to expand by involving new fields such as cloud gaming and NFT. We are also developing Super Game from the perspective of how far different games can be connected to each other.”

Again, time will tell so stay tuned for an official announcement – if either game makes it that far into development – in the coming years.

Outer Wilds

The set-up of Outer Wilds, Mobius Digital’s stellar open world adventure game, is that you’re an intrepid explorer in a solar system that’s going to end. You have 20 minutes to explore nearby planets, solve mysteries and determine why the sun is going supernova and destroying everything. Spectacles like planets that are only explorable during certain time periods, shifting gravity and much more make the exploration a treat (and discoveries are tracked throughout all playthroughs).

Insomniac Games’ Sunset Overdrive has finally received a litany of new details. After the wacky and wild reveal trailer from last year, we’ve know come to know that the game combines Crazy Taxi’s punk rock, Jet Set Radio’s aesthetics and speed, a city of endless rail grinding like in Tony Hawk’s Project 8 and the shooting mechanics Insomniac has displayed in earlier games.

As hinted at previously, Sunset Overdrive takes place in a world seemingly controlled by FizzCo. The company is releasing a new energy drink, Overcharge Delirium XT, but it’s seemingly causing citizens to mutate. You play as a janitor around during the launch party for the beverage who gets caught up in the chaos when the mutants, called “The OD’d”, effectively overrun the city. FizzCo reacts by cordoning the city off – since it would result in bad publicity for its energy drink – and you’ll be trapped within.

This section of the city includes day and night cycles, which differs each time, and an island. You’ll encounter friendly factions as well as hostile ones. NPCs will throw out side-quests for you to accomplish. The open world elements manifest as you’ll be wall-running, grinding and mantling across the city while shooting foes.

And what weapons Sunset Overdrive features – there’s the High Fidelity, which fires ricocheting vinyl discs; the Roman Candle which shoots fireworks that can burn foes; the TNTeddy grenade launcher which fires teddy bears strapped with explosives; Captain Ahab, a harpoon gun that fires slowly but can also use its energy drink attachment to annihilate crowds; a freeze gun to turn the OD’d into Christmas ornaments; and of course, there’s the AKF**kYouUp.

We’re not sure what that one does yet.

Insomniac has also implemented a Style system, which rewards you with Amp upgrades and level-ups as you go forth. The Amop upgrades allow for slots to upgrade weapons along with a melee attack for status effects. You can hold up to 8 weapons in total. You’ll have total freedom to customize your character by choosing either Male or Female genres and six different races with options for tattoos and body paint. You can also wear every piece of clothing – yes, EVERY piece – regardless of gender.

Sunset Overdrive is currently planned for release this year on Xbox One. Stay tuned for more details.
