The free DLC delves into Zero's "murky past" and offers trippy new story content, characters, levels, and gameplay mechanics.

It’s been a long wait for Askiisoft’s free DLC for Katana ZERO, first announced in 2019 after the base game sold over 100,000 units. While it couldn’t provide a release date, the developer debuted a new teaser, showcasing all kinds of bloody mayhem. Check it out below.

Furthermore, Askiisoft revealed in the trailer description that the DLC is “finally nearing completion.” Zero’s story will continue as players learn more about his “murky past” through new levels. Fans can also look forward to new characters, gameplay mechanics and weapons (including the Plasma Blaster).

Though the DLC was initially touted to be half as long as the base game, it’s seemingly grown in scale over the past several years. Whether it arrives this year or not, it’s looking like a meaty experience for fans.

Katana ZERO is available for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. It was released last year for iOS and Android. At one point, it became the second fastest-selling title for publisher Devolver Digital and sold 500,000 units in less than a year.

Along with the usual slashing and slow-mo, the ten-minute gameplay video showcases the new Plasma Blaster and robot arm weapons.

Over a year since its last update, Askiisoft has released the first gameplay footage of Katana ZERO’s upcoming DLC. It showcases Zero as he enters a mysterious government lab and slices through the personnel of New Mecca. Check it out below.

Along with the fast-paced and sleek combat that the base game is known for, the footage showcases new weapons like the Plasma Blaster. This shoots area of effect plasma which can chain to nearby enemies and disintegrate them instantly. Then there’s a robot arm which catches projectiles and sends them back with authority.

A release date (or name) for the DLC has yet to be confirmed. The developer confirmed last year that it was about half as long as the base game. It will still be free, but the increase in size and scope has resulted in delays. Hopefully, there will be more news in the coming months.

Katana ZERO is out for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Samurais that cut down foes with swift and deadly strikes, ninjas that strike at their enemies from the darkness and disappear into the night- there’s just something about these two very different kinds of warriors that attracts both storytellers and audiences in large numbers, and video games, like any other entertainment medium, are not immune to those charms. Over the years, dozens upon dozens of excellent games have done some memorable stuff with samurais and ninjas, and that’s seen even more of an uptick in recent years. And now that it’s been some time since we spoke about our favourite games with samurais or ninjas in then, here, we’re going to speak about a few more.

GHOST OF TSUSHIMA

Let’s start with the most obvious choice, because obviously, there was no way Ghost of Tsushima was not going be to in the list. Living the samurai power fantasy in a vast, richly created, beautiful open world that is brimming with striking vistas- Ghost of Tsushima accomplishes is defined by all of this, and so much more. Just as deserving of praise is the combat, which serves up the perfect samurai experience- and as you play more and Jin keeps moving further and further away from the code of honour he’s been bound by his entire life, those gameplay mechanics begin changing as well, allowing for much more brutal, deadly, efficient, and silent ways of dispatching enemies.

Microsoft has announced the next slate of titles coming to Xbox Game Pass, starting with Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition on October 15th. It will be available for PC subscribers and offer 4K Ultra HD visuals, two new game modes and two new civilizations. Co-op title Heave Ho (PC), action platformer Katana Zero (console, PC and Android) and The Swords of Ditto: Mormo’s Curse (PC) will also be available on the same day.

But that’s not all. Bandai Namco’s Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition will also be available, bringing the remastered RPG classic to console and PC subscribers. On October 21st, ScourgeBringer will exit early access and be available for console subscribers while October 22nd sees Cricket 19 and Supraland added.

Overall, there’s quite a bit to look forward to. Next month could potentially be even bigger with the Xbox Series X/S launching on November 10th. The consoles will be available for $499 and $299 respectively with major titles like Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5 and more receiving enhancements.

Like beating your head against a wall (for fun).

Games with soul-crushing difficulty have a certain undeniable charm to them, because when developers manage to strike that elusive yet perfect balance between challenging and fair – or come close to doing so, at any rate – they deliver experiences that offer something that nothing else can. The satisfaction of overcoming an insurmountable hurdle, the swelling sense of victory that accompanies defeating a massive, deadly boss- these things are priceless. Thankfully, there was no shortage of games in 2019 that gave us exactly those things, and in this feature, we’ll be looking at a few such titles. Without further ado, let’s get started.

WARGROOVE

Position itself as a spiritual successor to the fan-favourite Nintendo series Advance Wars, Wargroove had a lot to live up to, and for the most part, it met those expectations expertly. And among the many things that endeared Chucklefish’s strategy title to the masses was its difficulty- Wargroove is a challenging game, and nearly every fight, every skirmish in the game is an uphill battle. And while Wargroove does occasionally become a bit too harsh with its difficulty, by and large it maintains a pretty healthy and consistent balance.

Out for roughly a week, Askiisoft’s Katana ZERO has already done fairly well for itself. According to the developer on Twitter, the 2D action platformer has already sold more than 100,000 copies on PC and Nintendo Switch. This makes it the second fastest-selling title for publisher Devolver Digital on Switch with Dodge Roll Games’ Enter the Gungeon being the first.

Thanks to the game’s success, players can expect some DLC in the future. What this DLC will be is unknown Askiisoft did confirm that it would add a Speedrun Mode in the future as well. So if you’re bored of beating Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in 25 minutes (or less), this might be pique your interest.

Katana ZERO already made headlines prior to release when it broke Switch pre-order records for Devolver Digital. For a first-hand look at the game’s synthwave soundtrack and insta-death gameplay, head here. Stay tuned for more details on the game’s first DLC and a release date for Speedrun Mode.

Askiisoft's pixel-art action platformer is already making an impact.

Stylish action platformer Katana ZERO is out now, bringing its gorgeous pixel-art murder to the masses at last. You can check out the launch trailer below to see it in action, but what’s perhaps more impressive is the hype behind the game. According to Devolver Digital in a recent tweet, Katana ZERO is currently the company’s most pre-ordered Switch title till date. The publisher hasn’t provided any figures on current pre-orders though.

Devolver Digital has previously published titles like Dodge Roll Games’ Enter the Gungeon on the Nintendo Switch, which “surpassed all expectations” with 750,000 units sold. In that regard, it will be interesting to see how Katana ZERO performs.

The game itself has been touted as being similar to Hotline Miami. It’s fast-paced, boasts insta-death combat, and allows players to manipulate time. The neo-noir setting also helps the visuals shine all the more. Katana ZERO is out for both Nintendo Switch and PC.

New trailers for Devolver Digital's side-scrollers revealed in Nindies Showcase.

Among the many indie titles featured during the recent Nindies Showcase were two games published by Devolver Digital. These are askiisoft’s Katana ZERO and Deadtoast’s My Friend Pedro, both which are confirmed for Nintendo Switch releases. More importantly, they also received a release date and release window respectively.

Katana ZERO is a side-scrolling action title where players can slow down time and annihilate foes quickly. It’s stylish and very fast-paced, though it carries the same “one hit death” mechanic that defines titles like Mark of the Ninja. It’s out for Switch and PC on April 18th.

My Friend Pedro was introduced to us at E3 last year, and immediately made an impact with its stylish side-scrolling gunplay. In an interesting twist, it will be coming to Nintendo Switch along with PC in June. Check out the latest trailers for both games below.

In case you missed it, Cadence of Hyrule – which is Crypt of the NecroDancer meets The Legend of Zelda – is also coming to Nintendo Switch.

Askiisoft, developer of Tower of Heaven and Overpowered, have released a new trailer for their upcoming “neo-noir, instant-death” action platformer Katana Zero. Check it out for yourself below and bask in the synthwave soundtrack, pulsing lights and admittedly excessive screen-shake.

Katana Zero emphasizes close-up, hack and slash combat with some admittedly stylish moves and flourishes leading to devastating results. It should be noted that the screen-shake can be toned down for those with motion-sickness issues or who otherwise find it distracting.

Published by Adult Swim Games, like Akiisoft’s previous titles, Katana Zero will be out sometime this year. For now, we know that it’s coming to PC by its Steam listing. Other platforms have yet to be announced but we expect more information to be revealed in the coming months.

What are your thoughts on Katana Zero and the excessive amount of violence it features? Let us know in the comments below.
