The game, which had allegedly been in development for three years, would have been set in the World of Warcraft universe, but in an earlier era.

Early in 2021, Activision confirmed that it had multiple Warcraft games in development for mobile devices, and while one of these was officially unveiled not too long ago with Warcraft Arclight Rumble, it seems not all of them are going to be able to see the light of day.

As per a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Activision Blizzard has cancelled a Warcraft MMORPG that was in development for mobile devices in collaboration with NetEase Entertainment, who also co-developed Diablo Immortal. As a result, NetEase has reportedly disbanded the game’s development team, which comprised of over 100 developers, only a few of whom are being offered transfers elsewhere within the company.

As per the report, the game, which was codenamed Neptune, was going to be a full-fledged MMORPG set in the same universe as World of Warcraft. It would serve as its spinoff though, taking place in a different time period.

Allegedly, Blizzard Entertainment and NetEase Entertainment disagreed on the terms of their working arrangement, which ultimately led to the title’s cancellation. In his report, Schreier suggests that this could have an impact on the working relationship between the two companies going forward.

This isn’t the only mobile Warcraft game that Activision Blizzard has cancelled of late. The Pokemon GO-like Warcraft game that had been in development for a while was also reportedly cancelled earlier this year.

Meanwhile, both World of Warcraft: Dragonflight and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic are due out later this year.

Two months after launching for PC and mobile devices, Blizzard's controversial free-to-play action RPG has achieved a new milestone.

Following its release on June 2nd for mobile devices and PC, Diablo Immortal has hit 30 million installs. Considering it passed 20 million installs on July 24th, its growth rate has been strong. This is likely owing to its recent release in China on July 25th.

Despite the backlash that the free-to-play title’s monetization has received, Diablo Immortal has reportedly been doing quite well in terms of monetization. Sensor Tower Store Intelligence reported last week that it had crossed $100 million in player spending worldwide on the Apple App Store and Google Play. It’s not only one of the fastest video game IPs to reach that milestone, second only to Pokemon GO, but it also became the 13th highest revenue-generating title in the world.

The majority of revenue is from the United States, followed by South Korea and Japan with 59 percent of total spending coming from the App Store. Diablo Immortal is currently in the middle of Season 2 with its Battle Pass available to purchase until August 4th. Stay tuned for more details on future updates and check out our review here.

Since launching on June 2nd, it's become the 13th highest revenue-generating mobile game globally as per Sensor Tower Store Intelligence.

Even with the backlash over its monetization, Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo Immortal continues to rake in revenue. The free-to-play action RPG has seen over $100 million in global player spending in the App Store and Google Play since launch, according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence.

It’s one of the fastest video game IPs on mobile to hit this milestone, behind Pokemon GO which took two weeks for the same. Diablo Immortal is currently the 13th highest revenue-generating mobile title globally and ranks fourth in worldwide player spending for mobile RPGs. If that weren’t enough, it’s also ranked second among MMORPGs with NetEase’s Fantasy Westward Journey on top.

The title’s performance in China has also been very good, becoming the most downloaded app in all categories for the App Store for the first two days. Along with being the third highest grossing game in the marketplace at launch, it ranked as the second highest just behind Tencent’s Honor of Kings. In terms of revenue breakup, the United States is first, followed by South Korea and Japan. Approximately 59 percent of global player spending is from the App Store while Google Play makes up 41 percent.

Blizzard confirmed last week that Diablo Immortal had crossed 20 million installs. For more details on the PC version, check out our official review here.

Free-to-play action RPG Diablo Immortal has been widely criticized since its launch, but it looks like it's still enjoying plenty of success.

Diablo Immortal’s launch has certainly been an eventful one, to say the very least. The free-to-play action RPG spinoff has been in controversies pretty much the day it was announced, and upon its launch last month, it was on the receiving end of widespread backlash from many in its playerbase, primarily due to its heavy endgame monetization issues.

Even so, the game’s been enjoying success on the commercial front, it would seem. Within the first two weeks of launch, Diablo Immortal had apparently brought in over $24 million in revenue, and within roughly a week after release, it had seen over 10 million installs, becoming the biggest Diablo launch ever (at least by that metric).

Now, it’s crossed another major milestone. Taking recently to Twitter, Blizzard Entertainment announced that Diablo Immortal has now been installed over 20 million times across all platforms. Clearly, the game’s free-to-play nature has been a huge point in its favour. To commemorate this milestone, Blizzard is giving away several in-game rewards to players who log in and claim them.

Diablo Immortal is available on PC, iOS, and Android.
