Zooming in at sales figures for just December, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 took the crown, with Battlefield 6 instead being ranked at third.

Alongside having revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been selling at a faster pace than the PS4 did in its launch year, Circana Analyst Mat Piscatella has also revealed software sales details for the year as well as the month of December. Battlefield 6 took the crown in game sales, topping the chart for the entire year. The multiplayer shooter was followed by NBA 2K26 in second place, Borderlands 4 in third place, and Monster Hunter Wilds in fourth place. Among the older titles in the best-sellers list were Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 at tenth place, Minecraft at 13th place, Forza Horizon 5 at 16, and Grand Theft Auto 5 at 20.

Taking a closer look at software sales for the month of December, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 took the lead, with Battlefield 6 being ranked third. Other titles in the best-seller charts for the month are a mix of newer games like Donkey Kong Bananza and older titles like Grand Theft Auto 5, Minecraft and Red Dead Redemption 2.

While other console makers might have started struggling with console sales last year, Nintendo has been doing quite well with the release of the Switch 2. Piscatella had confirmed, the Switch 2 ended up being the best-selling console of the year in the US, with the country accounting for 4.4 million units. Along with this, the new console is also noted as selling faster than the original Switch from back in 2017.

As he noted, the Switch 2’s hardware sales single-handedly managed to offset industry-wide downward trends in console hardware sales. Sony’s PS5 ranked second for the period. The Switch 2 has also been described by Piscatella as being the “fastest selling video game console hardware platform” in history so far.

While things might be going well for Nintendo for the time being, research firm Niko Partners has predicted that the company will end up raising the price of the Switch 2 thanks to the worldwide memory shortages affecting manufacturing. The firm noted that, while the Switch 2 is priced competitively when compared to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo might have to bring its latest console in line with its competitors to maintain profitability.

In the meantime, Battlefield Studios has been working hard on creating and testing more content for the upcoming second season of Battlefield 6. While it hasn’t yet revealed too many details aside from its February 17 launch date, the developers provided a few hints about what kind of content we can expect when Season 2 of Battlefield 6 is kicked off.

Among the new content coming to the game is a brand new map, dubbed Contagion, that will also feature its own unique gameplay mechanics. No details have been provided about these mechanics, aside from vague hints about players needing to use equipment to interact with them, a soldier wearing a gas mask in the teaser trailer, and the fact that the map’s name implies some sort of contagious infection will be involved.

Battlefield 6 is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For more details, check out our review from back when it first came out.

2025 has been an incredible year of RPGs, with many enjoyable ones making their way to our gaming systems. Visually resplendent, narratively engaging while coming with some meaty combat systems and mechanics, the best ones of the lot had us sold quite early on, and invested even beyond their credits in some cases.

We took on the task of bringing our picks, and a winner, of ones that really stood out and took over our lives. Without further ado, the nominees for the best RPGs of 2025 are:

1. Where Winds Meet

Everstone Studios brought us an incredibly detailed open world and an RPG adventure in which the world came with us on our journey, offering up an unprecedented amount of freedom in how we could approach its many mysteries, secrets, battles, and story.

It’s build potential, strong combat mechanics, inclusion of player professions, amazing traversal mechanics, and some deliciously slick wuxia animations make this one a very immersive addition to 2025’s ranks, and one that comes with a lot of depth and ambition. We’re quite interested to see where this one goes over the course of next year.

2. Clair Obscur: Expedition

Sandfall’s breakout hit took the RPG genre by storm with stunning and intriguing mechanics that had us at the edge of our seats right off the bat. With a talented voice cast who really sold their material and a soundtrack that continues to enjoy a lot of love from the gaming world, this is a title that we’d gladly come back to for a fun hour of exploration and combat.

But it’s the characters who make us stay, every time. Clair Obscur’s biggest strength is the Expedition that brings an end to the nightmare it presents us with, and its members are the heart and soul of an RPG that never overstayed its welcome.

3. The Outer Worlds 2

The Outer Worlds 2’s attempt to put us in the shoes of an Earth Directorate Agent on a mission in Arcadia has been an excellent effort that blends casual takes on megacorporations with a story that was quite riveting. The companions accompanying you on your adventure are a quirky and interesting bunch while the game’s gear system brought very creative touches to the table.

We particularly liked the fact that gear made by specific corporations had synergies with other equipment from the same brand, for instance. With a lot to do in Arcadia and a lot of freedom in how you approach it, this was a definitely welcome addition to our libraries of 2025.

4. The First Berserker: Khazan

Neople and Nexon’s decision to take a fresh look at the early days of the Dungeons & FIghter series paid off very well, and The First Berserker: Khazan has been an excellent action-adventure RPG with a great combat system taking the center stage.

Khazan’s vengeance fuelled adventure is brought to life by an anime-inspired cel-shaded art style that has stood out while his brutal efficiency in the field of battle has catapulted this one to the heights of being among 2025’s finest titles. It’s a game that just fires on all cylinders, all throughout its runtime.

5. Elden Ring Nightreign

FromSoftware’s successful run continued with its foray into multiplayer roguelikes, and Nightreign’s fast-paced trip through Limveld has been a great place to go for some wild action and unpredictable experiences in a multiplayer system that can have you laughing at how badly things went wrong, or stunned at how your fellow Nightfarers take on the most fearsome enemies.

With the new The Forsaken Hollows DLC now added into the mix, this one might continue to be among the most-played RPGs for a while yet.

6. Monster Hunter Wilds

The latest addition to the Monster Hunter franchise brought all of its strengths, a few creative flourishes, and barely any of its limitations to the Forbidden Lands. With visually stunning biomes housing some truly imposing monsters for us to hunt, this game was such an entertaining one we almost felt sad to move on from it as other titles took our attention away.

Monster Hunter Wilds is just fun and a delight to play thanks to its great performance and enrapturing gameplay loop.

7. Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The Shinbakufu’s infiltration of Japan’s government, and Naoe and Yasuke’s quest to dismantle their control marked a much-needed success for the series while giving Assassin’s Creed fans a title that they had been wanting for a long time.

As the franchise’s first truly current-gen entry, Shadows lived up to the hype thanks to an overhaul of the stealth mechanics and Yasuke’s unique brand of chaotic justice as a combat specialist. Japan’s many vistas were absolutely gorgeous backdrops for a combat and exploration loop that had us visiting every corner of the map we could get to, and that’s quite the compliment to any RPG.

8. Borderlands 4

As the much awaited next entry to a beloved franchise, Borderlands 4 brought its signature wit and charm to the table while giving us an RPG that nailed the experience. Joining the Vault Hunter’s adventure through Kairos was a treat in more ways than one, and the game’s combat mechanics were a blast.

While its main story could be seen as a matter of personal preference, the dearth of side content and the manner in which the franchise’s style is brought to the fore at nearly every turn are reasons to dive into what could be the best Borderlands title yet.

9. Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Lumiose City has been a great staging ground for some great Pokemon battles and quite a hub for ambitious trainers looking to make their mark on its populace. Exploring the city has a lot of perks to it, and you never know just what you might find on the ground or across its rooftops.

The combat is nothing to scoff at either, bringing a lot of exciting battles between talented trainers and a lot of juicy rewards to dive into when it was all done. This was an RPG through and through, and one that had us thinking about it when we were busy with the real world.

10. Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector

This one’s among 2025’s more innovative RPGs, bringing a balance that did wonders for its gameplay loop. Stepping into the shoes and neurons of the rogue Sleeper had us forgetting to keep an eye on the clock for the several nights it took us to play through the story.

This is a game that has you taking the protagonist’s role quite seriously, and is one that might haunt you for quite a while after you face the consequences of a bad decision. That’s a solid RPG if we ever saw one.

11. Digimon Story: Time Stranger

Bringing a poignant, excellent story to the table, this addition to the Digimon Story Series of titles was nothing short of captivating. We could not wait to find out the fate of our protagonist as we navigated its world and built bonds with other characters and Digimon in our search for the cause of a future catastrophe.

Taking us across time and space, this was an adventure that brings a fond smile to our faces when we think of all the great moments its story and gameplay loop gave us, and is an easy recommendation for anyone who hasn’t tried it out yet.

12. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

This sequel is a continuation of Henry’s adventures that hit all the right notes for fans of the Kingdom Come franchise’s formula. This was an RPG that had us immersed in the landscape it let us loose in, and quite entertained by the quirky populace it housed.

There are a lot of laughs to be had in the many conversations you can find, and many an entertaining hour engaging with all of the content that’s on offer for you in this title. It’s a thoroughly entertaining game, and one that’s really quite hard to put down once it picks up the pace in its main narrative.

13. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

The surprise opportunity to return to a version of Cyrodiil we’d never seen before is certainly among the 2025’s highlights. Returning to a beloved title after all these years with all of its current-gen bells and whistles thrown in was pure gaming bliss, and Oblivion continues to be among the most solid RPGs you can find out there.

This is the definitive way to enjoy a game that is legendary among RPG fans, and also outside of the genre thanks to how awesome it has become over the years.

14. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

Bai Wuchang’s search for her lost sister took us and the character to some surreal locations populated by bizarre enemies. The lands of Shu hid a surprising amount of depth to its lore, while the game’s combat was already on display as the centerpiece of the experience long before it was released.

Wuchang is definitely among our favorite silent protagonists, a couple of notable lines excluded, and her adventure is a brutal yet exciting journey through a very interesting take on ancient China.

15. Mandragora Whispers of the Witch Tree

Playing as the Inquisitor on a mission through this title’s dark-fantasy world brought a lot of fun to our time with it. Its action-RPG gameplay loop worked well with its side-scrolling adventure where the story was every bit as entertaining as the battles it led us to.

This is definitely among the stronger contenders for the crown of 2025’s best RPGs, and was definitely one that had us entertained from its opening hours right up until the end of its main story.

16. Trails In the Sky 1st Chapter

As a reimagining of the first chapter in a great saga, this title is definitely an RPG you don’t want to miss. It brings all the elements of the genre’s greatest titles to the table, making them breathe life into a story that’s going to be quite entertaining whether you’re familiar with the franchise’s roots or not.

Add in a combat system that works very well and blends real-time and turn-based loops in a way that feels very unique and entertaining. Its story brings a lot of heart and charm to the experience, framing your role and actions in the gorgeous open world quite well and making you feel like a small yet relevant part of a sprawling kingdom. It’s definitely a fine addition to the genre, and among the greatest ones of 2025.

While each of these titles has been excellent in its own way, there is one that undoubtedly takes 2025’s crown thanks to how well its many elements work together to bring an experience like no other to our screens.

And our winner of 2025’s best RPG is:

Clair Obscur: Expedition

Gustave, Maelle, Luna, Sciel, Monoco, and Verso bring incredible powers and an adorable amount of vulnerability to the seemingly impossible task of ending the Paintress’s reign of terror over Lumiere. With emotional heft, morbid humor, excellent character development, incredible combat, and brilliant performance across platforms, this is our favorite RPG of 2025 by a long shot.

And that’s a wrap on our picks for 2025’s best RPGs. We can’t wait to see what 2026 is going to bring to the table, and of course, we’re going to be ready to dive in when the time comes!

From massive role-playing games and open worlds to co-op titles with tons of replay value, these titles kept us busy throughout the year.

Going into 2025, few of us expected that it would be this bountiful in terms of quality game releases. Role-playing games, racing games, platformers, and action-RPGs – each month has offered something new and compelling. There’s just one problem: Time. What should you prioritize first? More importantly, which games are guaranteed to give the most bang for your buck?

Let’s dive into the most amazing games of this year that can offer 50 to 100 hours (maybe even more) of great gameplay.

Ghost of Yōtei

Returning to your birthplace to avenge your brutally murdered family is cool and all, but discovering all the puzzles? Bonding with your ferocious wolf by slaying poachers? That’s where it’s really at. Ghost of Yōtei is excellent at seamlessly weaving optional activities into its exploration – be it Bamboo Strikes, Sumi-e Paintings – and making every single one feel unique. But maybe you’d fancy earning some new armor that can deflect bullets by stealthily infiltrating a teahouse for Ginji the Armorer. Perhaps earning an incredible Charm by assisting Ran the Bowyer. Slay Takezo’s disciples for the privilege to face him in a duel. And probably engage in some bounty-hunting on the side.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Mysteria Ecclesiae is out, meaning Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has wrapped up all its DLC, but even if you didn’t venture off the beaten path, Henry’s journey is still one of the best open-world RPGs of all time. Starting from nothing, slaving away in menial jobs, finding your calling as a blacksmith (or a hunter, or an herbalist, really, take your pick), and slowly building yourself back up, Bohemia is simply bustling with things to see and do. Lead a noble life, beloved by all, or become a no-good criminal, destined only for the guillotine. It’s your choice, and the sheer reactivity of the world is something to behold over the course of 100+ hours.

Jurassic World Evolution 3

The biggest and perhaps most satisfying game in the series yet, with 90 species of dinosaurs with juvenile variants added for the first time. And that’s not even including the dinos from Evolution 2, added for free post-launch. But even with the extensive campaign, community creations and challenge modes, the real time sink is in Sandbox Mode, as you perfectly craft the dinosaur park of your dreams, optimizing every single aspect…or watching it fall into chaos. It even features a custom island generator for when you (inevitably) have to start over.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

For all the ways that Ghost of Yōtei surpasses Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the former is missing one thing: Base building. Or more accurately, hideout customization, where you can adjust the very moss on rocks to cultivate your league in the most aesthetically pleasing way possible. Of course, Shadows has plenty of other content, from castles to attack, skills to master, loot (weapons and armor) to plunder, and so on. In fact, there are even new story quests, collaborations, parkour improvements, and Corrupted Castles to challenge.

Clair Obscur

On its own, the story is an absolute rollercoaster, especially when optimizing builds and employing the most broken techniques possible. Act 3 is where all bets are off, however, and Clair Obscur unveils the full gamut of its post-game. A painted serpent in the skies; the Flying Manor where a familiar foe awaits; the Endless Tower with multiple sets of challenges – there’s just so much to discover, especially if you’re circling back and wiping the floor with previous Act bosses. It would all be for nought without a superboss waiting at the end, but don’t worry – Clair Obscur has that too.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

There’s nothing quite like wrapping up Silksong after years of waiting, going online and then asking out of pure bafflement, “Wait, Act 3?” Because you can explore the world of Pharloom, ascend to the top, defeating its toughest bosses, and yes, maybe rescue a few Fleas along the way. But there’s so, so much more, beyond what you’d even expect (or prep for). So go and complete those wishes, discover even more incredible characters, and if you’re feeling especially masochistic, there’s the one-hit KO Steel Soul Mode for a true challenge.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered

Technical problems aside, the Oblivion remaster is a treasure trove of content, even without accounting for mods. You get the massive base game – a heroic quest to stop the Gates of Oblivion from manifesting in Cyrodiil, with all its side quests, quirky NPCs, and dungeons to plunder. There’s also various DLCs for even more adventuring (and arguably superior narratives). Play multiple builds, approach quests from different angles and most importantly of all: Endurance, endurance, endurance.

The First Berserker: Khazan

There’s more to The First Berserker: Khazan’s story than the revenge quest, least of all the retries required to best its bosses. Embarking on side quests and finding all the fragments of Ozma’s Diary is the route towards the best ending. But even if you’re content to explore or replay on higher difficulties, there’s also New Game Plus, which carries over all armor, skills and weapons, increases the level cap and lets you craft Epic and Legendary equipment. Best of all? Transmog for the true endgame – fashion.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

230 Pokémon to catch and 65 Mega Evolutions only scratch the surface of Z-A’s content. There are dozens of side missions to complete, the Z-A Royale to grind through (complete with promotion battles), and online multiplayer, including the new Battle Club for four players to duke it out. And that’s without factoring in Mega Dimension, a completely separate realm where the true end-game, full of level 100+ threats, awaits alongside even more Mega Evolutions.

Donkey Kong Bananza

An out-and-out blast from start to finish with a story that can be finished in less than 20 hours. But if you’ve played a 3D Mario game, you know that’s not the end – it can’t be. There are 1000 Banadium Gems, and what’s a King of Kong to do but collect them all? DK Island and Emerald Rush add even more with the latter’s rogue-like structure offering even more replay value, and that’s before diving into the limited-time events each month for new statues.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach

When you can spend dozens of hours simply delivering packages, building bridges and ziplines, and admiring the sights, you know it’s something special. Fortunately, Death Stranding 2 offers more beyond that, from a healthy selection of weapons and targets to unleash them on to side quests with cameos from your favorite personalities to Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii as a Pizza Chef, no less. Otherwise, plan out your optimal routes and just have fun with the community.

Elden Ring Nightreign

With eight Nightlords and several other bosses in between, there’s room for plenty of killing in Limveld. Choose your Nightfarer, optimize that playstyle with different Relics and – if you like them enough – complete their personal quests for even more power. That’s the base Nightreign experience, not including all the Shifting Earth locations to explore. However, you can also challenge the Everdark Sovereigns, even tougher versions of the Nightlords, or venture into the Deep of Night for longer expeditions with cursed loot. And if that isn’t enough to keep you busy, attempt to solo everything. The Forsaken Hollows DLC adds even more content in the form of new Nightfarers, and new bosses.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

The original Trails in the Sky FC takes about 66 hours if you’re aiming for everything – recipes, side quests, perfectly optimized Orbments. The remake is just shy of six hours, but even if you’re focused purely on the story and side content, it’s a long journey, made all the more fulfilling with expanded cutscenes and more combat depth.

Where Winds Meet

Everstone Studio makes no bones about wanting you to get lost in its massive world, offering thousands of NPCs to interact with and dozens upon dozens of hours of content. Even outside of the multitude of weapons, mystic techniques and Martial Arts to master, there is such a rich plethora of optional activities to indulge in. Engage in Shuai Jiao (the Sumo before Sumo became a thing), venture into dungeons, or just run around and explore the massive world while helping those in need. It’s a truly expansive experience that’s only going to get bigger once other regions launch globally.

Hades 2

There’s a moment in Hades 2 when you think you’ve understood everything that the game has to offer – its various Boons, the systems governing its weapons, the Incantations. Then the way to Olympus opens, and a brand new game is laid bare. Of course, you’ll still be growing crops, optimizing your Arcana, maxing out Keepsakes, upgrading weapons and unlocking their Hidden Aspects, and most importantly of all, discovering pets to assist you in runs. And even after the ending, there’s yet more to discover and greater challenges to conquer the Oath of the Unseen.

The electric type Pokémon's Mega Evolution has been described as holding electric energy equivalent to ten bolts of lightning.

Game Freak has revealed more details about the upcoming Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Rather than going deep into the new features, however, the developer has instead revealed one of the new Mega Evolutions that will be coming to the title on December 10 – Mega Zeraora. The Pokémon was shown off with a small clip that indicates that it will be particularly challenging to obtain. Check it out below.

“It looks like getting Mega Zeraora for your team will be a little difficult,” wrote the developer in the trailer’s description. “Keep your eyes peeled for a way to encounter it as you play through the DLC!”

Along with this, the developer has also revealed a few details about Mega Zeraora through its official description, which discusses its capability of holding on to electric energy, as well as how its physiological features could be used in a Pokémon battle. Check out the official description of Mega Zeraora below.

“The electric energy it stores in its body is equivalent to 10 bolts of lightning. Protrusions on its forehead, chest, back, and the backs of its hands are where the electric energy is particularly concentrated. The protrusions steadily emit a pale blue light. If Zeraora stores up lots of energy and then unleashes attacks, those attacks will pack enough power to take down multiple nearby opponents at once,” reads the description.

Mega Dimension is slated to be the first paid DLC coming to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and will be priced at $29.99. It will feature post-story content, largely revolving around a new mythical Pokémon – Hoopa – and a strange girl. The story of Mega Dimension will have players once more setting out to explore Lumiose City in the midst of spatial distortions emerging throughout the city. This, in turn, has opened up the Hyperspace dimension where players can find essentially a reflection of Lumiose, complete with its own stronger wild Pokémon.

The DLC will also bring with it Korrina, who has an affinity for Mega Evolutions, including Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A was released on Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2 just last month. As a new entry in the Pokémon Legends, the title focuses more on exploration and capturing Pokémon rather than the more straight forward battles offered by the mainline series. However, that’s not to say that players can’t partake in Pokémon battles here either; there are plenty of challenges for a trainer looking to test themselves.

The title takes place in the Kalos region’s Lumiose City. As part of the core campaign of the title, players will also have to take on Rogue Mega Evolutions of Pokémon from all over the city, which tend to offer tougher challenges than what players might have faced along the way.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A has proven to be quite successful since its release, with sales figures from last month indicating that it was the biggest physical launch of a game in the US since the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. For more details about Pokémon Legends: Z-A, check out our review.

Perhaps the busiest month of the year, October is full of sequels, long-awaited titles, and more than a few chilling experiences.

As packed as September was, October looks to somehow, someway, offer even more. Big open-world blockbusters, the return of multiple renowned franchises, a brand new extraction shooter that could give the big players a run for their money, and much more await. And that’s not even accounting for the horror titles, arriving just in time for Halloween season. Without further ado, here are the 20 biggest games to look forward to in October 2025.

Ghost of Yōtei

Easily the biggest game of the month, and certainly a contender for Game of the Year, but that’s to be expected. Sucker Punch Productions’ skill for creating engaging open worlds is on full display once more as Atsu scours Ezo for revenge against the Yōtei Six. There’s more variety and less repetition, while the combat system has been expanded to include more weapons, fresh mechanics like disarming enemies (and throwing weapons into their imminent carcasses), and a wolf that occasionally helps out. In a year where Sony desperately needs some PS5 exclusives, Ghost of Yōtei looks to be an incredible showcase for the console when it launches on October 2nd.

Battlefield 6

About four years ago, the Battlefield franchise suffered a slump that few thought it could ever recover from. But here we are with Battlefield 6, a combined effort between DICE, Ripple Effect, Criterion and Motive Studio, which could take the series to new heights of success. The return of an epic globe-hopping campaign is already fantastic, but even the multiplayer with its Classes, weapon feel, and grounded atmosphere has us excited. Even Portal and the new Battle Royale don’t look too shabby. Launching on October 10th, Battlefield 6 will be available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Game Freak’s latest Pokémon title also marks the series’ debut on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the original Switch, but it goes even further by taking place in a single city. As a new trainer in Lumiose City, it’s your job to investigate the strange outbreak of Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon while having their wish granted in the Z-A Royale. Between new Pokémon and Mega Evolutions, a free-for-all competitive mode called Battle Club, and much more, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is certainly shaping up well. It’s out on October 16th for Switch 1 and 2.

The Outer Worlds 2

For a game that goes “bigger and deeper” than the original, with an overhaul to Skills and Flaws alongside much larger planets and a third-person perspective, The Outer Worlds 2 certainly feels like the underdog heading into October. Maybe it’s the sheer range of other big-name sequels to look forward to, but the new, more-serious story (which still packs moments of dark levity) looks intriguing, and there’s plenty of room for more niche playstyles. Whether you’re a team player or a solo operative intent on killing all NPCs, The Outer Worlds 2 could satisfy that role-playing fix when it launches on October 29th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger

Seven years after Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory, a new entry in the Digimon Story is finally upon us with Time Stranger. Launching on October 3rd for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, it was actually announced way back in December 2017 and offers a brand new story with time travel elements. Following an incident that would change the world, the player, as part of a mysterious organization, ventures back in time to try to prevent it. On top of over 450 Digimon to collect, players travel to Illiad in the Digimon World and attempt to unravel what’s going on. Will it end up overshadowed by Pokémon Legends: Z-A or stand out all the more? We’ll find out in the coming days.

Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy has returned, and thankfully, it isn’t part of a compilation that’s available only for a limited time. This time, Nintendo Switch players can experience each title in the series for $39.99 separately or for $69.99 in a bundle. Switch 2 owners can play both games at 4K courtesy of a free update, and there are new features like more Storybook Chapters, amiibo support and Assist Mode. These are more like re-releases than remasters, but if you’ve ever wanted to play two of the best 3D platformers ever made, they may be worth checking out on October 2nd.

ARC Raiders

As if it isn’t competing for time with all the other big releases, Embark Studios’ ARC Raiders is sandwiched between two triple-A shooters (with Battlefield this month and Call of Duty in the next). Nevertheless, if the response has proven anything, it’s that it may very well hold its own. Launching with four maps with different conditions and challenging foes, the extraction shooter packs Embark’s sleek shooting with a distinct post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Between mastering different skills, competing quests, taking a shot at the leaderboards, or trying to understand the world as a whole, ARC Raiders promises a lot, and we can’t wait to dive in when it launches on October 30th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Little Nightmares 3

The heavyweight survival horror titles are already out, but there’s still Little Nightmares 3 to look forward to ahead of Halloween. Set in The Spiral, the story follows Low and Alone as they attempt to escape its hellish landscape. Between towering monsters, sentient puppets, and other horrors, it’s a tall task, but each packs unique tools like arrows and a wrench for puzzle-solving and self defense. And while couch co-op isn’t supported, there is a Friends Pass, meaning another player can join in without owning the game. All the better to spread the terror when Little Nightmares 3 launches on October 10th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

Keeper

You never truly guess what Double Fine Productions will pump out next, and Keeper, out on October 17th for Xbox Series X/S and PC, is truly unique. You control, of all things, a sentient lighthouse that ventures across the world to learn more about its purpose. Between encountering other strange entities in a wordless narrative and the trippy visuals, it’s certainly shaping up to be an adventure unlike any other.

Jurassic World Evolution 3

You kind of know what you’re getting with any Frontier Developments management sim, and Jurassic Park Evolution 3 is no exception. The usual campaign, sandbox and challenge modes return, but there are over 80 species, each with variants (including juvenile dinosaurs), and more complex creation tools to embrace alongside new attractions. Couple this with new locations, and there’s plenty to look forward to when it launches on October 21st for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Ninja Gaiden 4

One of the gold standards for incredible hack and slash action-adventures, Ninja Gaiden, is finally getting a new mainline title on October 21st for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Ninja Gaiden 4 follows Yakumo of the Raven Clan as he ventures to the remains of Tokyo to slay the Dark Dragon. The Order isn’t having it, though, and neither is series mainstay, Ryu Hayabusa (who’s also playable), leading to some bloody battles. While possessing an array of armaments, Yakumo also has Bloodraven Form to modify his attacks and even unleash Bloodbath Kills to maim several foes at once. Promising accessibility via Hero Mode and hardcore challenge courtesy of Master Ninja difficulty, Ninja Gaiden 4 could be the most epic title in the series yet.

Kingmakers

What happens when modern soldiers are sent back in time to fight medieval battles containing hundreds of units? You get Kingmakers, with its unique mix of third-person shooting, extensive military equipment and base-building, launching on October 8th for PC. When you’re not engaging in the battle, you can take an overhead view and command units. All this and co-op for up to four players? If nothing else, it looks like a fun bit of controlled chaos.

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault

Nothing can stop a good merchant, especially one like Will, who ventures into dungeons to collect the wares himself. Moonlighter 2 directly follows the first game’s events, as you venture into The Endless Vault, collect valuable artifacts, and sell them in your store. The profits can be used to upgrade the town of Tresna, your own shop and even equipment to delve deeper into the dungeons for more profitable finds. With a jump to full 3D and new mechanics – like using your own backpack as a weapon – there’s plenty to look forward to when Moonlighter 2 launches in Steam Early Access on October 23rd.

Double Dragon Revive

The classic side-scrolling beat ’em up franchise returns courtesy of Arc System Works and Yuke’s when Double Dragon Revive launches on October 23rd for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. Alongside Story Mode with support for up to four playable characters, there’s Extra Mode with more than 50 mission types and a uniquely separate story across multiple unlockable episodes. Between this and Absolum, it’s a great month for beat ’em up fans.

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted

After botching Battle for Neighborville and Plants vs. Zombies 3, PopCap Games is going back to the drawing board. Or more specifically, to the first garden in Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted, an HD version of the tower defense that started it all. Fortunately, there’s a lot to justify that $20 purchase, from a new hardcore mode to the more forgiving but still challenging Cloudy Day Mode. You can even compete in local PvP as the zombies or defend together in co-op. Replanted launches on October 23rd for Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 1 and 2.

Tormented Souls 2

The original Tormented Souls didn’t push any boundaries, but for a title inspired by old-school Resident Evil, it wasn’t half-bad. Tormented Souls 2, out on October 23rd for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, continues the story of Caroline as she ventures to a mysterious yet sinister new location. While you’ll be shifting between realities, solving puzzles and fighting off new enemies, tank controls are still in effect, and you won’t have unlimited saves, just like the survival horror games of yesteryears, but you can enable assist mode.

Once Upon A Katamari

A new Katamari title that isn’t a remaster? Somehow, it’s true as Once Upon A Katamari launches on October 24th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The Prince is once again tasked with fixing the sky after The King of All Cosmos destroys it yet again, and this time, you’re venturing through time, rolling up the Ice Age and other notable eras. With character customization, new tools and KatamariBall, a new four-player competitive mode, the good times may indeed be ready to roll.

Dispatch

What happens when Mecha Man no longer has his mech suit to fight crime? He does the next best thing, taking on a job as a superhero dispatcher. That’s only the start of Robert Robertson’s ordeals, however, as he works with ex-supervillains, dispatching them to different locations with unique consequences. Between unlocking new abilities and managing their various personality quirks, Dispatch is a unique mix of narrative adventure and hero strategy with a strong cast. The first two episodes debut on October 22nd, followed by the next two on October 29th for PS5 and PC, with the final four out in November.

Wreckreation

I’ll admit to being somewhat disappointed with Bugbear’s Wreckfest 2 (which has seen several updates after launching in early access), but Wreckreation, developed by the team behind Dangerous Driving, could fill that void. It’s out on October 28th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and introduces the 400 square kilometer sandbox that is MixWorld, which you’re free to build up and wreck alone or with others. With extensive customization tools and plenty to discover, it’s an interesting proposition, and hopefully one with a lot of staying power.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection

Have you ever wanted a definitive collection of all classic Mortal Kombat titles? Yes, even Mythologies: Sub Zero and Special Forces? Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection could be the answer as it contains Mortal Kombat 1, 2, 3, 4, Trilogy and much more with multiple versions, online play with rollback netcode and instant access to all secret characters. You can explore the lore of the series and its characters, and learn more about the franchise’s development courtesy of new creator interviews. Launching on October 30th for Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, it could very well be a must-buy for any fighting game fan.

Players must eliminate the most number of opposing Pokémon in three minutes to win, and there's plenty of room for strategizing.

Game Freak has dropped a new trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, outlining the Battle Club and Link Battles. This new multiplayer mode sees four players battling it out in a free-for-all – the one to eliminate the most Pokémon within the three-minute time limit wins. Check it out below.

Since it’s a knockdown, drag-out brawl in real-time, players can opt to attack first, but if they hang back, there are power-ups to gather on the edges for a strong late-game play. Each defeated Pokémon is worth one point, and there are no restrictions on moves or Mega Evolutions.

Even more intriguing is that you can re-enter the fray after a Pokémon faints and continue fighting, as long as there’s time remaining. The competitive leanings of Link Battles are apparent, especially with opportunities to gank opponents or come in with a power play at the last moment.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A launches on October 16th for Nintendo Switch 1 and 2. It’s playable at Nintendo’s booth during Gamescom, allowing attendees to go hands-on with its new features and modes from August 20th to 24th.

Attendees can also check out Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Borderlands 4, Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade.

The jury is still out on whether Hollow Knight: Silksong will receive a new trailer at today’s Indie World Showcase, but there’s some good news for Gamescom attendees. It’s playable at Nintendo’s booth at Gamescom in Hall 9 from August 20th to 24th, which is great for those who want to avoid the rush at Xbox’s booth.

But that’s not all. Nintendo DE also confirmed on Twitter that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Hades 2, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, Borderlands 4, EA Sports FC 26, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and more will also be playable. Considering many of the above either lack release dates or launch later this year, it’s a good opportunity to go hands-on early.

Before Gamescom kicks off, Opening Night Live will return on August 19th with two hours of announcements and updates. Nintendo isn’t confirmed to be showcasing anything, but it could drop a surprise or two out of nowhere. Stay tuned for more details and live coverage of the event later this month.

Launching alongside the title on October 16th, the bundle includes the console and a download code rather than a physical version.

Following new details and gameplay for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a new Nintendo Switch 2 bundle with the title has been revealed. Rather than a physical copy, players receive a download code for the Switch 2 version.

It launches on the same day as the title, but retails for $499.99 and is available while supplies last, similar to the Mario Kart World bundle. With the console costing $449.99 standalone and the Switch 2 Edition at $69.99, it’s a better deal overall (if you can get one).

Pokémon Legends: Z-A launches on October 16th and will also be available for the original Nintendo Switch. Players venture to Lumiose City in the Kalos region, where Pokémon and humans live side by side. However, strange things, including a phenomenon causing wild Pokémon to Mega Evolve and turn hostile, are afoot.

As part of Team MZ, you need to investigate what’s happening while dealing with the antagonistic Rust Syndicate. There’s also the Z-A Royale, where trainers compete at night and move up the ranks to ultimately grant their one true wish. Head here for more details.

Something is causing wild Pokémon to suddenly Mega Evolve and run rampant in Lumiose City, which the player must combat.

Outside of new characters, a new location and the Z-A Royale, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is also introducing Rogue Mega Evolutions. The strange phenomenon only affects wild Pokémon in Lumiose City, as they Mega Evolve and effectively go berserk, unable to suppress their strength.

Players will need to tackle them with Mega Evolutions of their own, which offers a look at the latest addition to the series: Mega-Dragonite. It takes some cues from Dratini with the wings on its head and a pearl on its tail. Despite its strength, however, you’ll also want an ally from Team MZ along to help out. “Strong bonds” with your Pokémon are also recommended.

Whatever is causing these Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon to appear, it’s up to the player to ultimately find out and protect Lumiose City. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is available on October 16th for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
Work with Team MZ to protect Lumiose City, square up against the Rust Syndicate, engage in detective work and much more on October 16th.

The latest Pokémon Presents brought new information and gameplay for Game Freak’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Showcasing the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, we get to see how the player arrives in Lumiose City and teams up with Team MZ. Check it out below.

Urbaine or Taunie will invite you to the team, which is focused on protecting the city and includes members like fashion designer-in-the-making Naveen and aspiring professional dancer Lida. As previously revealed, you can explore by day to capture Pokémon or partake in the Z-A Royale at night, battling trainers and climbing the ranks.

You’ll have to contend with more challenges at higher ranks, including Rust Syndicate boss Corbeau, who has some business with Team MZ. Aside from capturing Pokémon during the day, you can hang out with them, take photos, customize your character with different hairstyles and outfits, or engage in some detective work with Emma.

Of course, catching Pokémon has other benefits beyond completing the Pokedex. Mable, acting director of the Pokémon Research Lab, will grant items as you capture more Pokémon and assist in her research.
