Learn how to expand your total mod slot capacity and equip more mods concurrently using this guide for Pragmata.

With just one mod slot available to you at the start of Pragmata, you will be hard pressed to make a tactical decision on exactly which one to equip for combat encounters. Fortunately, you do eventually gain additional mod slots as you slowly progress through the story.

This guide for Pragmata is all about upgrading the number of slots you use for mods.

Unlock The Shelter

A safe haven for Hugh and Diana, this hub location unlocks immediately after the prologue. Once inside, make your way to the Unit Printer terminal which is where you craft or upgrade equipment.

Unit Printer

The majority of options will be unavailable initially, and you will also require a fair amount of Lunafilament or Pure Lunum in order to perform upgrades, which includes everything from weapons and abilities to nodes and mods.

Mod Slot upgrades in particular, will eventually be found under the Attachments tab, which begins with only the Repair Up and Thrusters upgrades available.

‘Additional Mod Slots’ can be maxed out at level four, with each adding one more slot for a cumulative total of five. The option itself will only unlock as you raise the level of your Shelter, so simply progress through the game normally until the blueprints become available.

That is everything there is to know about gaining additional mod slots in Pragmata.

In Pragmata, both Storage Expanders and Cartridge Holders start off with fairly low capacities before eventually being upgradeable with collectibles. These upgrades are scattered across multiple sectors and blocks, with a few unlockable via the various Cabin’s Stamp Club boards.

This Pragmata guide lists the locations of all Storage Expanders and Cartridge Holders to be found in the game.

If you’re having a hard time keeping up with Pragmata’s unique combat and gameplay, have no fear. We’re here to help you get the momentum you need to carry you through.

Pragmata can be a tough one if you don’t make full use of its various systems and mechanics. It’s got a learning curve that seems pretty daunting on the surface, but we’d like to help you cut through the noise and become a robot-destroying powerhouse as fast as you can nail down these tips to guide you.

If the prospect of seeing Hugh and Diana through to the end of their heartwarming adventure in The Cradle sounds appealing to you, join us as we take you through how to make the most out of their synergy. Let’s get started!

1. Object Scan Is Very Useful

You’re going to need every advantage you can find as you make your way through The Cradle, and Object Scan is a very nifty way to find upgrade materials and REMs. It’s available pretty early for purchase, and we’d recommend making a beeline for it as soon as you can manage.

It’s quite cheap and has a very good range, allowing you to get to useful items more easily than you would without it. Whether you’re looking for an easy way to hunt down useful items or are a completionist who can’t stand the idea of undiscovered loot, this one’s your best bet at finding it all.

2. Save Auto Hacks For When You Really Need Them

Diana’s hacking gauge is a valuable resource that you want to use as strategically as you can. While the Auto Hack ability is going to save you a bit of time and perhaps trouble in tough situations, it’s best used as a panic button when you really need a breather from the chaos unfolding around you.

It doesn’t pay to use it too often, as it uses up quite a bit of your hacking gauge, which could prevent you from using stronger protocols that could turn the tide in your favor. Of course, if you’re surrounded and need to open up multiple enemies in a pinch, it’s a panic button like no other.

3. Fast Moves Improves Your Survivability

If you find yourself taking damage more often than you’d like, we recommend unlocking Fast Moves as soon as you can. It’s a nifty ability that helps you create space, while nailing down the timing on dodges can slow time briefly to give you a solid window to let off a few well-aimed shots or perhaps a hack that turns things around.

It’s great to have for all those battles where you’re required to stay on the move while hacking through enemy defenses. There are a lot of those in the game, and this one is going to be great in those situations. We found it especially useful against some of the game’s harder bosses, and we’d recommend having this one on most of the time or at least until you’re confident enough to do without it.

4. Consider Critical Shot As A Finisher

Hitting those purple bonus nodes when you’re routing Diana’s hacks can have enemies who are already at low health brought down low in a stun that gives you a lot of time to deal some damage. Critical Shot is going to do that for you, and is a superb finisher in those situations.

Use it well, and you’re going to find pesky enemies crumbling in front of Hugh and Diana’s combined might thanks to the i-frames it gives you in crowded spaces and the fact that clearing out enemies with it guarantees a little extra Lunafilament (more on that in a bit).

5. Prioritize Bot Scan

Like most shooters, Pragmata places an emphasis on hitting enemy weak points once you open up their defenses with Diana’s hacks. But finding those weak spots can be difficult thanks to the combat’s fast pace. That’s where Bot Scan comes in.

It highlights enemy weak spots, letting you get in some burst damage the moment you’re able to sneak past their defences. It’s especially useful against new enemy types where you’re unsure of where to hit them once their shields are down.

6. Invest In Decode Consistently

It’s easy to overlook Decode, an ability you get pretty early in the game. But doing so would be a mistake, as it’s a very strong single-target hack that gives you bonus damage for using it, which is quite practical since you’re going to be doing a lot of hacking anyway.

It’s a great tool for taking down troublesome enemies, although you might want to be strategic about where and when you use it. It’s best saved for harder enemies, as the extra damage is more impactful against the ones that are challenging to bring down.

7. Confuse Troublesome Enemies

Confuse has been one of our go-to Utility Nodes as it lets you get past shields a lot easier, and can even steal shields of enemies when you use it right. What’s more, you can even force bots to turn against their own kind, which essentially gives you some free damage and some potential breathing room, which you can use to unleash further damage and sow chaos among the enemy’s ranks.

It’s quite nifty and fits so many situations that we found ourselves refusing to leave The Shelter without it.

8. Use Heat With The Right Supporting Abilities

Getting bots to overheat brings them to a vulnerable state, allowing you to get a few well-placed shots in. The best way to do that is to use Heat nodes in tandem with Combust Mode and the Pulse Carbine. It’s a potent way to fill up Overheat gauges and set enemies up for a Critical Shot.

However, you might want a different strategy for bosses, as getting their Overheat gauges to fill up can be a lot harder than regular enemies, and you’re better off using other tactics against them. And remember, some of your own weapons can overheat too, so keep an eye on their respective gauges, as you don’t want to be caught without a means to cause damage when you’re in precarious positions.

9. Pair Quick Fix With Repair Up

If you’re the type to try tanking damage while dishing out some of your own, Quick Fix is a great tool to have, as it speeds up your Repair Cartridge use while Repair Up increases your health recovery per cartridge by 10%, both of which are boons in battles where you’re quite swamped and need to stay in the fight for just a little longer before you can turn the tides.

They’re useful even if you rely on dodges and using Fast Moves, as they can let you recover from any mistakes a lot easier than you would without them.

10. Optimal Performance Rules!

We had such an easy time with Pragmata thanks to this one, as the 10% increase to your overall attack power when you’re at full health pairs very well with Repair Up. It’s a great way to stay at full health while improving your attack power, and it’s especially effective against bosses when you encounter them for the first time.

It’s a solid all-around mod that’s going to serve you very well, no matter what the game throws at you, and is one that we didn’t unequip even when there were more attractive options at hand.

11. Know Where To Pick Up Lunafilament

If you’re finding yourself short on Lunafilament, look for it in enemy drops and use Critical Shots to ensure a higher amount. Safe Boxes, Supply Boxes (which you can identify by their yellow color), and completing Training Sims are other great sources of it. You could consider using Pocket Refinery to increase the amounts you get from each activity by 10%, and you’re going to have more than you need in no time!

Why is it important? Well, it’s the currency you use to upgrade your loadout’s gear at The Shelter’s Printing Unit.

12. Go Out Of The Way For Upgrade Components

Remember when we said you’re going to need every advantage you can get in this game? Well, Upgrade Components are an important part of your character progression, but they can be hard to find if you’re not actively looking for them. They’re often in places that are easy to overlook, or perhaps hard to reach until you come back with abilities you get later down the line.

It’s always worth it to come back and pick up any ones you see, as they’re needed to improve Hugh’s suit, primary unit, and Diana’s hacking abilities, all of which are your bread and butter against the robot hordes.

13. Don’t Sleep on Red Zones

Pick up Red Gate Keys as much as you can, as the Red Zones are great sources of valuable components and currencies, while you’re going to need to clear them if you’re looking for 100% completion for Pragmata. Yes, they’re a challenge, but the way we see it, they’re an opportunity for you to truly push your limits and learn better ways to utilise your loadouts.

You should be constantly on the lookout for Red Gate Keys and going out of your way to pick them up and use them as soon as you can. Like Upgrade Components, it’s always a good idea to backtrack for either Keys or Red Zones.

14. Balance Your Always Print Loadout

We recommend taking the Shockwave Gun, Stasis Net, and the Decoy Generator along with you whenever you’re diving back into the Cradle, as they’re a potent combination that is effective across the board. The Shockwave Gun does excellent burst damage, while the Stasis Net is great for holding targets in place while you line up shots, especially when it’s paired up with Offense Mode

The Decoy Generator can help you get some much-needed breathing room to set off a few hacks of better aim and blast from the Shockwave Gun. You could also try using it in tandem with Multi-hack and Freeze if you’re heading to situations where you need some crowd control potential.

Of course, your Grip Gun should be thrown in whenever applicable, and we suggest being as tactical as you can when you’re switching weapons. It pays to take a minute to consider the best course of action, although that’s easier said than done in more intense battles.

15. A Solid Boss Loadout

While the above Loadout works for weaker enemies, we’d recommend the Charge Piercer, Photon Laser, and Jackhammer when you’re looking to take on a boss. The Charge Piercer is a mighty weapon for whenever there’s an opening to cause big damage, while the Photon Laser should be your go-to if you manage to stun a boss, allowing you to melt health bars with ease.

The Jackhammer is best used when you’re trying to get some damage in, even when enemies aren’t opened up, allowing you to consistently chip away at them while you guide Diana through her hacks. You could also consider the Riot Blaster’s AoE potential for larger enemies that come at you aggressively, as you won’t have to be as precise as you would need to be with the Jackhammer.

And that’s about it for this one. Of course, Pragmata comes with enough depth that these are all suggestions to help you find your footing before you begin to try different loadouts of your own that are better suited to your play style. Nevertheless, these tips are all ones that helped us get through the game quite effortlessly, and are proving quite useful even in Lunatic Mode!

We’re going to get back to tearing through the robots, and hope that you’re going to have an easier time doing the same thing with our tips!

Pragmata may not define the genre, but rave reviews and player buzz show it has left a real mark.

What is the ideal length of a game? Many will tell you that it depends on the genre, but also, no, you’re wrong, and how dare you. An open-world game like Crimson Desert, promising hundreds of hours of gameplay, can be just as valid as Ghost of Yōtei, which wraps up its plot in a relatively comfy 30 hours (with additional content nearly doubling that time). Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 said, “Stand back”, and only asked for 29 hours to finish everything.

Would anyone argue with their value, even with each of these titles costing $70? Probably not, but at what point does that cost-to-hour ratio start to look unattractive? What is the ideal standard? We’ll probably never know because, once again, it varies from game to game.

While that won’t stop gamers from demanding the absolute most from triple-A titles, a different sentiment has evolved over the years, one that Pragmata has reinforced to the relief of many: You don’t need dozens of hours of gameplay to deliver a fun experience. Sometimes, it’s not about how much time you can spend on a game but the quality of those hours.

For those confused, Pragmata – the latest from the house that brought us Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and soon, Onimusha: Way of the Sword – is not a very long game. Some reviewers, like VGC, were able to complete it in eight hours, while GameSpot took about 12 hours. And if you’re going for a completionist run, FRVR claims that it can take even longer due to the sheer amount of hidden items, collectibles, and so on.

There’s even a Simulation Pod, which offers multiple challenge levels, each with three objectives that award Cabin Coins. You can spend these on upgrades, but there are also resources like Signal Data to collect. As a means for sharpening your skills, it’s a great side activity. It’s also absolutely unnecessary for the core experience.

At the end of the day, the development team chose to focus on what matters: The story, the characters, the presentation, and of course, the gameplay. In fact, that last part is what resulted in all the delays. As it turns out, creating a third-person shooter where you’re simultaneously controlling two characters, one solving maze-like puzzles to expose weaknesses and the other unloading ammo to take them down, is difficult, and that’s without considering all the traversal, the dodging, and the mechanics behind different boss battles.

I mean, think back to all the Resident Evil games released since June 2020, when Pragmata was first announced. How many of them have deviated from the third-person or first-person norm (aside from Requiem, which featured both) for their gameplay? And this isn’t to take anything away from the series, aside from maybe Re:Verse and Resistance, which can rot in oblivion. It’s just that this is a third-person gameplay loop that no one, even the many companies known for decades of such experiences, has ever attempted before. And it’s genuinely enjoyable – easy to get into, somewhat difficult to truly master, yet still satisfying, especially as more and more systems get thrown into the mix.

Of course, it isn’t skimping on presentation either. Don’t let the lunar base setting fool you – it’s a stunning mix of far-future NASA-like structures and robots that occasionally cross the uncanny valley straight into my nightmares. Hugh and Diana, the protagonists, are especially detailed, from their facial expressions to their animations. Seeing them venture through these environments laden with stellar reflective surfaces and incredible lighting is immensely enjoyable. In fact, there’s so much technical wizardry about – like the team painstakingly creating a replica of New York to ensure it looked AI-generated and inventing realistic hair tech that would be adapted in Requiem – that some players may never even know about.

All of this, topped by an endearing story with strong characterization that doesn’t overstay its welcome. It doesn’t suffer any bloat; for all the secrets and optional activities, it’s fairly linear. You don’t need to grind, which, to be fair, hasn’t been a thing for the developer’s games outside of Monster Hunter for years. And in this day and age, where it could have easily demanded $70 for this level of production quality and sheer gameplay innovation, Pragmata only costs $60. Yes, even on Nintendo Switch 2, amazingly enough.

The fact that games like this are being made, that too with more than enough resources to ensure their success, is noteworthy. Heck, it even threw in a little extra to ensure Pragmata runs fairly smoothly, though you can thank the sheer controversy drummed up by Monster Hunter Wilds for that.

Of course, some will note that the price justifies the playtime, and that since this is a new IP, one that’s not as tried and tested as many others, a $60 tag helps get more potential customers through the door. Don’t get me wrong – I wouldn’t be surprised if Pragmata is significantly discounted in just six months, despite being one of the biggest games in years. However, I think it goes beyond simply raking in the sales.

Because there are plenty of proven winners in the genre. With Pragmata, it feels like the developer sees something more in its world, characters and gameplay. Perhaps there’s the potential for a new franchise in the coming years.

Which is pretty lofty, though they probably never imagined in their wildest dreams that it would take this long. Yet, there’s some hope that its appeal isn’t lost on the industry as a whole. That you don’t have to arbitrarily stuff your game to justify the price. Yes, it’s a double-edged sword for some franchises like Battlefield and Call of Duty, especially given the backlash they’ve received for not having campaigns in previous titles, but would you have really shed a tear if Black Ops 7 didn’t grace us with that awful story? I certainly wouldn’t, and Battlefield 6 is only marginally above that.

But when comparing it to other long-running franchises, it’s impressive how much Pragmata manages to accomplish within its short runtime. Furthermore, many underestimate the value of shorter games, especially with so much competition on the market. For once, it’s nice to pick up a game, knowing that you can see everything it has to offer within a weekend (with some left over for the Monday blues). It’s refreshing not to have to dedicate dozens of hours to a story that doesn’t respect your intelligence, with characters that you don’t care about, in circumstances that you’ll forget about the next day. More importantly, to experience a gameplay system that’s never really been done before, at least not to this degree of success.

Pragmata probably won’t stand out as the greatest of all time. It may get buried under the sheer barrage of releases in the coming weeks and months. However, judging by the critical success and the positive buzz from players, it made a strong impression. Hopefully, it ends up lasting well beyond that reasonable playtime and into a well-deserved sequel.

Capcom names "early release of a playable demo" and "adding support for Switch 2 at an early stage" as two reasons for the success.

Following its worldwide launch on April 17th, Capcom’s Pragmata has sold more than one million units. It’s available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, although the latter is yet to launch in Japan and other parts of Asia until April 24th.

The publisher credited the “range of marketing initiatives, beginning with the early release of a playable demo” for the game’s success. That includes broadening “the title’s availability by adding support for Nintendo Switch 2 at an early stage.”

As a new IP that retails for $60, it arrives off the back of an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, where 97 percent of the currently 4,296 user reviews recommend the game. In terms of peak concurrent users, it actually hit a new record this weekend at 68,687, surpassing Resident Evil 3 Remake.

Overall, it’s good news considering Pragmata was announced in 2020 and suffered multiple delays. Director Cho Yonghee would later reveal that it was due to the amount of trial and error the team faced in implementing the hacking mechanic. “There was so much trial and error and back and forth just to see what could land and what works best.”

“Having the two mechanics, Diana’s hacking and Hugh’s shooting, has been one of the causes for us to put more time into that game. We took our time to balance it all out,” said producer Naoto Oyama.

That time and effort clearly paid off, as Pragmata currently has an 86 Metascore based on 96 critical reviews. You can read our review here – we gave it a nine out of ten, praising the visuals, storytelling, and combat while criticizing the bland nature of Hugh as a protagonist.

Where it goes from here and whether Capcom greenlights a sequel or DLC remains to be seen, so stay tuned.

Despite not reaching the heights of Capcom's biggest releases, the sci-fi puzzle shooter has still been well-received on PC.

Following strong praise from critics, Capcom’s Pragmata has launched to an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam. About 97 percent of the 1042 user reviews recommend the title, and in terms of peak concurrent players, it reached 56,905 shortly after launch.

While this may not seem very high compared to the company’s heavy hitters like Resident Evil Requiem or Monster Hunter Wilds, it’s solid for what’s essentially a new IP. Furthermore, it’s ahead of the recently released Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection (54,778) and Resident Evil 7: biohazard (20,449). Even Resident Evil 3 Remake is only slightly ahead at 60,293 peak concurrent players.

Capcom hasn’t said anything yet about sales numbers. However, considering Pragmata was announced in 2020 and spent several years in development to nail the gameplay loop, it’s probably happy to see it released and receiving such a positive reception. Where it goes from here with the franchise, if that’s even on the docket, remains to be seen.

Pragmata is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Check out our review here, where we gave it a nine out of ten.
Pragmata is finally here, and while the RE Engine does very well on PC, does the PS5 Pro version manage to hold its own?

Pragmata’s largely been a blast to play on any of its available platforms, with an innovative twist to sci-fi shooters and a story with a lot of emotional heft. We were quite impressed with the experience in our review, but while that was on a base PS5, we put in a fair bit of time with the PS5 Pro to see how its breathtaking visuals are brought to life on Sony’s mid-gen powerhouse.

Why, you ask? Well, we believe this could be one of the many reasons to justify a PS5 Pro purchase. Pragmata was always a visually ambitious title, and the RE Engine has already done some fine work with PSSR2 in Resident Evil Requiem. It’s worth exploring if the PS5 Pro is able to take Pragmata’s ambitions and deliver a presentation that feels premium not just at a glance, but in a consistent manner across the board.

So, has this one managed to achieve that feat? Or is it just another title that brings the usual compromise between visual fidelity and frame rates? We’re happy to take you through it, so let’s dive right in!

What Do The PS5 Pro Enhancements Offer?

With only a single mode on offer (basically a toggleable high frame rate mode), the PS5 Pro version of Pragmata does come with enhancements over what’s on offer in the base version. The base PS5 version targets 60fps on both its Quality and Performance modes, with the former dropping frames to sustain better ray tracing and visual fidelity, while the latter manages to stay at 60 frames per second for the most part, but at the cost of blurred backgrounds and a bit of shimmer from time to time.

On the Pro, you’re looking at 4K 60fps gameplay with ray tracing and PSSR-enhanced reconstruction, all of which work in tandem to present a sort of amalgamation of the base console’s two modes. It’s important to remember that the PC version comes with path tracing on board, and comparing the PS5 Pro’s output to what a high-end PC can deliver is obviously going to be in the latter’s favor.

But from our time with it on PS5 Pro, Pragmata is definitely looking like the complete package, although it may not be the best-looking version of the game across platforms. But why is that so?

While it might seem that the PS5 Pro coming with only a single mode is limiting, that’s actually far from the truth. Pragmata makes intelligent use of the console’s improved capabilities over its base counterpart to present a visually detailed, smooth experience that manages a consistent framerate while maintaining 4K visuals quite consistently. What’s more, it uses ray tracing and PSSR 2 quite well to ensure that what you’re looking at is good enough to be worth talking about.

But before we dive into the details, it’s worth noting that the PS5 Pro version does support 120 fps with VRR on compatible displays (through a toggleable High Frame Rate option), but we found that it varied a little too much for our liking. You’re better off with a more consistent framerate, considering how this one’s gameplay loop can be quite demanding on both your brains and fingers. We’d say that the game is better enjoyed when it’s more responsive; the default mode (when High Frame Rate mode was switched off) was the one we’d have recommended.

On the Pro, you’re getting a no-nonsense approach to visual fidelity that does very well to bring out the game’s impressive art direction while also having enough responsiveness during combat to make the action feel immersive and, most importantly, consistent. The PS5 Pro doesn’t force Pragmata to compromise, and that’s a very good thing for an experience like this one.

Diving Into The Graphics

It’s time to dive into what Pragmata looks like on the PS5 Pro. We’re happy to tell you that this one’s a stunner on the Pro, while the base PS5 does manage to look good, but with the compromises we’ve discussed earlier. You see it from the very moment you set foot on the lunar facility, its pristine walls and eerie silence shining through very well on the Pro. The colors shine through, and every scene looks so darn immersive that you could consider this one a showcase for your friends who might be thinking of picking up a new console.

The Pro brings that uncanny sci-fi vibe to life very well, and on a first glance, it gives off a very premium vibe to the entire experience. The sheer scale of the facility comes across very well, and you’re going to be stopping to take in the sights quite often during your playthrough. The image you get doesn’t just look sharp, which is kind of a given on the Pro, but looks expensive as the RE Engine works its magic on every scene that you’re in.

You only have to take a look at Hugh and Diana to see what we mean, as the character models are a great showcase of how well PSSR and the RE Engine work in tandem to generate stunning visuals in Pragmata. There’s barely any disparity between the gameplay and the cutscenes as far as they’re concerned, and the materials on Hugh’s suit, along with his facial features and animations, are all top-notch, a facet of the experience that holds true even on the base PS5.

But it’s Diana who’s the star of the show as far as Pragmata’s graphical capabilities are concerned. She’s equal parts creepy and adorable, which is a nuanced take on her characterization that the PS5 Pro brings to life. There’s a sort of disconnect between her android eyes and the facial expressions she often displays, and her model holds up very well in close-ups. Well enough to be a very believable take on her character. Of course, her hair rendering deserves a special mention, and it’s as good on the Pro as it is on every other platform. We’d go so far as to say that she represents a generational leap for graphical fidelity, while the environments she explores with Hugh sell a sense of scale very well.

That’s because those environments are oh so detailed on the Pro, with metallic surfaces reflecting light very realistically. Indeed, every surface in the game is quite readable both when standing still and while you’re in motion. Be it panels on the floor and walls, or the damage that shows on robots once you get a few bullets into them, it’s all done very well, and the PS5 Pro keeps up with everything you throw at it without breaking a sweat. They don’t just look clean, but react so believably to light that they sell the experience very well.

Of course, credit must be given where it’s due. Pragmata doesn’t get path-traced illumination like its PC counterpart, but what it does with its ray-traced global illumination does deserve a lot of praise. Enter an area with a direct light source, and things are immediately noticeable. You see rays bounce off surfaces, with all the variations you’d expect. Whether it’s in the background or right in front of you, the reflections are all there, and always working to set the mood for a scene, with natural changes across varying spaces.

Light glances gently off polished floors and metallic surfaces, while reflecting straight off glasses and monitors at angles that are quite natural. When you put Pragmata side by side with the base PS5’s performance mode, you’re going to see just how well the Pro handles lighting in comparison to the blurry backgrounds on the base version.

The shadow quality is another highlight, and they’re very stable in motion while remaining soft enough to look authentic. We didn’t see any drop in visual quality at all, and it all comes together so well that it makes the game feel quite grounded in reality, even as its art style and premise take you to a future that we’re still fairly distant from in the real world.

Speaking of the future, the fact that Pragmata manages to do all of this on the PS5 Pro while managing to avoid noise, image shimmering, and edge breaking on the PS5 Pro’s default mode is definitely a feather in this version’s cap. It’s clear that this one’s making very good use of PSSR 2’s ability to reconstruct images in real time, and doing it in a way that sells the game’s spectacle with stability, making the PS5 Pro version the one to beat. But of course, a stable image must be backed up by solid performance. How does the game hold up on that front?

Smooth Performance All Around

On the default 60 fps option, you might think that Pragmata is going to have to sacrifice a bit of responsiveness on the altar of its visual ambitions. But we can tell you that it isn’t the case, with consistent frame rates even during busier sections. That immediately makes the combat look and feel like it’s all behaving exactly as you want it to, while the visuals continue to hold up under strain.

And while higher frame rates are always welcome, our time with the 120 fps mode wasn’t as good as the default option. The frame rates often landed in the inconsistent fps range while the visuals took noticeable dips as the Pro tried to keep up with it all. You might want to give it a go if you’ve got the display for it, but we’re going to be choosing the stable 60 fps option every time, as it’s a great balance between visuals and performance.

Of course, we would have liked path tracing thrown into the mix, but that might be asking too much of the PS5 Pro, considering just how well it runs the experience without it. The performance at a higher frame rate is also something we’re not too happy with, considering how it reduces the visual quality, but again, 60 fps is quite enough for this one. It is worth mentioning for those of you looking to get higher frame rates on your displays, though.

To conclude, the PS5 Pro gives Pragmata its best possible version on consoles, although its best visual form is still going to go to its path-traced PC version. But it’s also more than just a cleaner version of what the base PS5 has to offer, with visuals and performance that blend seamlessly into an experience that vastly outdoes its lower-specced counterpart. This one’s a game that does more than just sharpen the image from a base PS5, but justifies the Pro as a visual platform that does well to bring unique experiences to life.

And on that note, it’s time to get back to hanging out with Diana and taking down rogue bots as a team!

Capcom's engineers needed a year and a half to finish integrating path tracing into RE Engine, and had to use DLSS Ray Reconstruction.

A couple of months after the release of Resident Evil Requiem and just a day before the release of Pragmata—the first RE Engine games to support path tracing—Capcom and Nvidia have published an hour-long talk at GDC discussing how they built the advanced feature into RE Engine. The talk is available in video form, which you can check out below, and features Capcom’s Hitoshi Mishima and Nvidia’s Calvin Hsu.

Mishima and Hsu revealed that the implementation of path tracing directly into RE Engine was handled by Capcom’s Kenta Nakamoto and Kosuke Nabata, and that it took them a year and a half to accomplish. The system seemingly makes use of Nvidia’s DLSS Ray Reconstruction technology to help with denoising, and was noted as being important to make sure that real-time performance was acceptable. Unfortunately, this also had the side-effect of making path tracing in Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata exclusive to Nvidia’s RTX graphics cards.

The speakers also noted that a number of design choices were made so that Capcom could make use of streaming RIS, which could pick the most important light sources to which path tracing could be applied, all while remaining efficient. These design decisions include the compensation of brightness so that scenes with spotlight-based lighting wouldn’t suffer from darkening artifacts, the use of Lambertian diffuse with single-lobe specular instead of the full bidirectional scattering distribution function (BSDF), the exclusion of image-based lighting, and the addition of emissive polygons.

As for DLSS Ray Reconstruction, Capcom made use of the technology to fix visual artifacts that could arise from subsurface scattering, frosty and blurry glass surfaces, and refracting surfaces like raindrops, among other things.

Leading up to their respective releases, both Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata got trailers for their PC versions, showcasing how path tracing could bring in massive changes to scenes thanks to more realistic lighting that was only possible using RTX graphics cards. Along with this, the trailers also made sure to showcase other RTX-related benefits, including DLSS 4 and its Multi Frame Generation, which could help boost frame rates by making the GPU generate extra frames between the game’s own outputs.

As for other qualities of the games, both Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata have been reviewed quite positively, which means that Capcom has been on quite a solid run when it comes to releasing high-quality games. Resident Evil Requiem is available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Pragmata is slated for release later this week—on April 17th—on the same platforms.

While you wait for the release of Pragmata, take a look at its most recent trailer, where Capcom showcased how protagonist Hugh can make use of his arsenal of weapons alongside android Diana as they make their way through The Cradle. The default weapon available to Hugh is the Grip Gun, which essentially acts as a pistol of sorts. When it’s time to deal more damage, however, Hugh can get his hands on the Shockwave Blaster, for example, which can help him attack multiple foes at the same time.

However, it is worth remembering that Hugh’s weapons aren’t the only thing you’ll need to use. Enemies in Pragmata have high defences, and you will need to make use of Diana’s hacking abilities to make them lower their guard.

The Cradle isn't the safest place for a budding friendship between a human and an android, but Hugh and Diana are far from helpless.

After its story-focused trailer that preceded launch, Pragmata has received another that doubles up as a quick guide to making the most of Hugh’s arsenal as he navigates The Cradle with Diana.

If you’re having a hard time coming to grips with the different weapons and, of course, hacking robots while fighting them off at the same time, this one could be quite helpful. It’s quite simple, really. Use Hugh’s default Grip Gun to pick away at enemies when you’re out of options or switch to Attack weapons like the Shockwave Blaster to get some AoE damage against enemies in a cluster. You can also tear through bots in a straight line with long-range guns that pierce through multiple targets per shot.

The key thing to remember is to stay in motion, using Diana’s hacking abilities while you control the space around you. Her multi-hack could be a life-saver in tough spots, opening up several bots for some serious damage. Alternatively, deploy a decoy to gain some breathing room while planning your next attack. It’s all up to you, and you’re going to need every tool at your disposal to push through.

Pragmata launches on April 17th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Check out our review for more details.
