7 of the best facial animation engines out there.

Next-gen is on the horizon and plenty of publishers have revealed new technologies which are not only setting a bar with regards to the visuals they can push but also in the field of realistic facial animations. These things are incredibly ambitious and we probably won’t see them implemented in games any time soon but considering game developers have pulled off mighty fascinating things on consoles with 512MB RAM, one should not write them off.

Facial animation technologies can make a lot of difference in immersing a player into a game and if pulled off right can also blur the line between games and reality. In this article we have mentioned seven such technologies that can push the PS4 games to the brink of reality.

A brief look into the future of the PS4 (or at least our take on it).

Sony have taken the plunge, seizing the moment with their PS4 reveal last Wednesday. In a climate where gamers are becoming increasingly impatient waiting for next gen, Sony have caught onto this momentum well. Sure, we’ve had the Wii U already, but it doesn’t really feel next gen yet, does it?

No, the PS4 was good news for tired ears, but the fight is not over yet. Certainly the Sony event on the 20th unveiled a host of pretty awesome games, but a console’s success cannot ride on the back of a handful of games alone. We need more, a sustainable release calender that will justify our investment in Sony’s new hardware. They are currently riding the waves of the announcement, but Sony will need to capitalise on E3 as the place to announce more awesome games for their new system.

We already know some of the developers who are working with Sony on the system, so here are our picks for ten titles that may get announced in June. Some are obvious, but we’re holding out for a few surprise announcements.

A rundown of the games that might be revealed during tonight's event.

The clock is ticking away and the rumor mill is in full swing. According to recent reports, Sony might be revealing some big games along with its PS4 showcase.

Please note that the games in this list are backed up by articles reported in the last and the current year. So we are not listing these games just for the sake of it.

Gran Turismo 6

Historically, Sony have always revealed a new Gran Turismo game along with hardware reveals. Back during E3 2005, Sony announced Gran Turismo 5 along with the PlayStation 3 reveal. So it is only obvious that history will repeat itself. Gran Turismo 6 is a game that will showcase the PlayStation hardware. The series has sold over 60 million copies so far since its inception back during the PSOne days.

The game has already been confirmed to be in development by Polyphony Digital, so it would be an awesome way to kick off the event. To top that, Sony also released a video which focused heavily on the history of Gran Turismo. You can check that below.

Quantic Dream’s New IP

Quantic Dream is rumored to be working on a PS4 title based on their domain registration called SingularityPS4. Now they also have a game in development for the PS3, but it’s been widely rumored and was event talked about by David Cage, co-founder of the studio, that they are working on a next gen game and considering their loyalty to Sony, this could be the best event to announce it. Could the Kara demo actually be a game for the PlayStation 4? Only time will tell.

Killzone 4/New IP

Ever since the original, Killzone has been hailed as a Halo Killer by loyal PlayStation fans. In my opinion, Killzone, similar to Halo, is in a class of it’s own. The infamous Killzone 2 tech demo for the PS3 created a lot of vibes in the industry and while the end result was not as impressive, the game could still be considered as something that matched the target render.

During the PS4 event, they could showcase a new Killzone game with a target render that is not misleading and actually achievable. Killzone 4 would be the best game to showcase the new PS4 hardware as Guerrilla are a studio that have also pushed technology. In fact it has Guerrilla Games are interested in continuing the Killzone franchise as well as a new IP.

Sony Santa Monica’s New IP

Earlier today there was a tweet that Sony Santa Monica–the creators of the God of War franchise–would be showing up during the event. Considering they already have a PS3 game in the works that is scheduled to be released in March, we think that this will be a new IP. God of War 3 was one of the most prettiest games on the PS3, and a PS4 version if announced could send people into a perpetual state of hype.

What does our future hold for tomorrow? We heard they may open Pandoras Box (again) live on stage, that would be AWESOME #playstation2013
— Sony Santa Monica (@SonySantaMonica) February 20, 2013

Sucker Punch’s New IP/inFamous 3

Sucker Punch haven’t been doing a lot since they shipped Infamous 2. We reported that Sucker Punch are working on an action game which will have multiplayer components. And then late last month, Bruce Oberg, co-founder of the studio showed interest in developing inFamous 3.

They are one of the studios of Sony that are expected to show a new game for the PS4. We don’t know whether it’s a new Infamous game or a new IP but considering the Infamous 3 ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, there could be every possibility that they could announce a new Infamous game at the conference. Imagine Cole using all those powers powered by a new hardware, now that would be something to see.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII/Final Fantasy 15

According to some industry chatter Square Enix are expected to show Final Fantasy Versus XIII on the PS4. Yes, the game could be on the PS4 considering its reveal back in 2006. Square Enix may be facing some technical difficulties or could have shifted the game to the new console to showcase its next generation Luminous engine.

This would not hurt the company since their cash reserves are way over a billion dollars and releasing the game on a new console with less install base, could actually work in their favor considering the consumer excitement for the PS4. There may be a chance that game shown will actually be Final Fantasy 15, a re-brand of Final Fantasy Versus 13, as we reported earlier.

What do you think? Will we see these games announced tonight?

The series that go around, come around.

It’s no surprise that the future of games is set to be dominated by sequels. It’s been this way for the past few decades, and it’s unlikely that this questionable trend will end any time soon. Some particularly prominent franchises are already marking double figures, and far too many established intellectual properties sport one too many spin-off titles for their own good.

History tends to repeat itself of course and, whilst I’m sure developers will be pushing for innovative new IPs in the next generation of home consoles, I have no doubt that this library of fresh ideas will be joined by plenty of sequels. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, as plenty of our favourite games have only come from the honing process of sequel after sequel. With that in mind, here are ten of our bets on what sequels will be showing up in the coming years.

Stay tuned to GamingBolt.com for more news and updates.
