DICE devs step back from their previous comments.

Earlier this week, DICE employees took to social media to blast the first trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare but now that the light of day has shined on those tweets, the developers appear to have a change of heart. Playstation Lifestyle rounded up all the tweets, some of which have been deleted, that apologized for the earlier comments.

Among the people who were backtracking on their comments from earlier were Roland Smedberg who admitted his comments were a bad idea. Randy Evans was another worker who was quite contrite, saying he was going to be playing quite a bit of the new game when it finally hit the market.

While DICE, which does work on the Battlefield franchise was busy ripping Infinite Warfare, it doesn’t appear Activision is fazed. The company is releasing all kinds of new info about the next Call of Duty. Infinite Warfare which is due to launch this November.

Seamless land-and-space battles as Call of Duty goes sci-fi.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s Design and Narrative Directors, Taylor Kurosaki and Jacob Minkoff, got candid about gameplay details, core technology, and more, during a livestreamed Q&A session on Twitch. Here are some of the highlights of the livestream:

In a major shakeup to Call of Duty’s linear design, in Infinite Warfare, players will be in control of the warship UNSA Retribution, which acts as a hub from which missions can be tackled in a more freeform order. The mission choices you make are meaningful and content will open up based on your decisions. To get a better understanding of how life played out on a warship, Kurosaki and Minkoff actually spent time on a US aircraft carrier and chatted with Navy admirals.

Infinite Warfare has been in development for three years, substantially longer than other Call of Duty titles, and this has allowed Infinity Ward to push the core technology further. While the core visuals are enhanced, Infinite Warfare sticks to Call of Duty’s trademark 60 FPS commitment, and brings with it a new highlight feature, “Seamlessness.” Remember the seamless land and space battles from Pandemic’s cancelled Battlefront III? Infinite Warfare’s Seamlessness feature appears to do just that: allow for seamless transitions between boots-on-the-ground combat and dogfights in space. What do you think about Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare? Let us know!

Activision reveals new details about Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remaster.

Hot on the heels of the Modern Warfare Remaster announcement, Activision has confirmed two more of the multiplayer maps which are to be included. “Bog” and “Overgrown” have made the list, alongside “Crash,” “Crossfire,” and “Backlot,” which had been confirmed earlier.

The Modern Warfare Remaster is set to feature 10 of the maps from Call of Duty 4. While Call of Duty 4, along with its “Variety Map Pack” DLC features twice this number, at 20 maps, we’re definitely not complaining: Judging from the extensive visual overhaul evident in our Modern Warfare Remaster screenshot gallery, a lot of care and attention have gone towards bringing the Modern Warfare Remaster’s maps up to current-gen standards.

While we are (understandably) excited about the Modern Warfare Remaster, it is still important to note that the game will not be sold separately. You’ll have to fork out $79.99 for Infinite Warfare’s Legacy edition in order to access the game.

Nine year of incremental visual upgrades shows.

While Call of Infinity Warfare was indeed announced earlier during Call of Duty livestream, for many, the most interesting bit of news from last night was the announcement of the Modern Warfare remaster. Incredibly, it’s been nearly ten years since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare released, a watershed moment in the seventh-gen that redefined the shooter genre.

Whatever you have to say about the next decade’s worth of annualized Call of Duty rehashes, Call of Duty 4 was certainly a masterpiece, and completely deserves a remaster. Have a look at the screenshots below to see just how far Call of Duty has come visually from 2007.

The massively increased texture resolution is what struck us first, of course playing to the eighth-gen consoles biggest strength—lots and lots of video memory. Blurry wall textures are replaced wholesale, while the apparent use of parallax occlusion mapping lends “pop” to brick wall faces. We see significant upgrades to the core geometry as well, with blocky edges giving way to more organic surfaces, and additional incidental debris.

The lighting system has also overhauled with a physically based rendering pipeline, putting this remaster in the visual ballpark of recent main line Call of Duty releases. Take a look at the gallery below and let us know what you think about the remaster!

Thanks, Reddit.

The game that started it all, revisited.

Call of Duty 4 is getting an unexpectedly shiny next-gen remaster. Head on over here to have a look at our gallery comparison of the remaster with the 2007 original: a lot more love and care has been lavished on this than the mere resolution/framerate bump we’re used to seeing. Better yet, by the looks of it, you won’t have to wait that long to get your hands on it: The Modern Warfare remaster is releasing simultaneously with Infinite Warfare, on November 4th 2016. This isn’t a case of “wait for our nebulous DLC plans late next year.” You’ll be locked and loaded from the get go.

We are, however, a bit disappointed by the news that the Modern Warfare Remaster won’t be sold separately. It will only be available as part of Infinite Warfare’s Legacy, Legacy Pro, and Digital Deluxe editions. Many people have expressed greater interest in the remaster than in Infinite Warfare itself, so we can’t help but feel that it’s case of making people pay for two products when they only really want one.

Still, we can’t deny the evident care that’s gone into the Modern Warfare remaster—work that’s arguably on par with what Rockstar did for GTA V on PS4 and Xbox One. You can pre-order Infinite Warfare’s Legacy edition for the appalling price of $79.99.

Update: This leak has been proven to be fake.

Original Story:

A leak on Reddit indicates that Battlefield 5 will be set during World War II, and is set to release on December 6th. Furthermore, the leak suggests that the yet-to-be-announced game will be subtitled “Eastern Front,” implying that the focus this time will be on the Russian front, known for being the scene of some of the most brutal, tooth-and-nails fighting in the war.

WWII’s been an underutilized game setting of late (although if went back in time to circa 2005 you’d have found nothing but WWII shooters lining the store-shelves.) Over the course of the seventh gen, most AAA FPS franchises shifted to modern/futuristic settings (ironically, because WWII fatigue had set in by around 2007).

Call of Duty is taking the logical next step with Infinite Warfare’s alleged sci-fi setting, but there are many people—as this poll indicates—who really want a AAA WWII shooter throwback. What would a current-gen WWII Battlefield game look like? Most early WWII FPSs were corridor shooters, built around the memory limitations of sixth-gen platforms.

However, DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine is based on the premise of wide, open environments, and a bit of simple geography tells us that there’s a lot of countryside in Russia. We expect Eastern Front to trade burned-out cityscapes for environments that hearken back to the Bad Company era—lots of open countryside and a focus on emergent gameplay. Without further details, though, it’s all up in the air. So as usual take this report with a grain of salt.

This one’s a bit of downer: Bungie’s Community Manager, David Dague (AKA DeeJ), debunked rumours that redditor RezylAzzir was actually a Bungie employee. The Destiny community’s been abuzz with rumours and theories about new content underway on account of a series of cryptic posts on Destiny’s subreddit by an unknown person who went by the username RezylAzzir.

RezylAzzir discovered and promptly posted about a hidden in-game Dead Ghost just 17 minutes after the Prison of the Elders update went live. This incredibly fast turnover led many to believe RezylAzzir was part of Bungie’s team. The mysterious redditor did little to dissuade that line of thought and went ahead to post a series of cryptic statements (some in Latin), which, by a stretch, could be interpreted to mean that a major Destiny update is set to drop on September 9th.

However all of this was debunked by DeeJ who stated: “Oh, and hey. Rezyl Azzir is not one of us. We cannot confirm nor can we decipher these riddles. It’s a mystery to us as well. Fun stuff, though. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, don’t worry about it. If you do, enjoy the speculation.”

Activision confirmed that Destiny’s sequel will only arrive in 2017, though major new content is promised to arrive some time later this year.

Cheaters and completely innocent players alike have been softbanned.

Dark Souls III appears to have a major cheating problem online. But rather than being proactive about the situation, Bandai Namco appears to have taken the easy route by laying heavy on the soft ban hammer. Kotaku reports that many Dark Souls III players were greeted with a “you have been penalized message” upon logging in.

Apparently, anyone who’s game contains invalid or corrupt data is fair game for the softban, which will restrict to playing with other “cheaters.” Invalid game data can arise from player tampering and cheating. But it could also arise from simply running mods. The first Dark Souls game was an infamously shoddy PC port, with a 30 FPS cap and the resolution inexplicably locked at 1024×600. The community-produced DSFix mod went a great ways towards making Dark Souls an actually decent experience on PC, and since then, a small but dedicated modding community established itself around the games.

While Bandai Namco’s concerns over cheating are certainly understandable, we feel that a more proactive, community-friendly approach would’ve been in everyone’s interests. As it stands now, the softban hammer’s sweep is wide: Cheaters are penalized. But so are people running mods, or even people who unwittingly picked up items dropped by cheaters.
