The remastered collection features Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and Sonic CD in one package.

Sega’s Sonic Origins, which collects and remasters four classic Sonic titles, is now available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The collection includes Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and Sonic CD for $40. Check out the release trailer below.

Though ostensibly the same games, they’ve been remastered in high definition on the Retro Engine. Two modes are available – Anniversary, which includes wide-screen support and unlimited lives, and Classic, with the original 4:3 aspect ratio and limited lives. Other new features include a Story Mode which connects all four games with animated cutscenes, Boss Rush mode, and Mirror Mode for reversed level layouts.

Each game also offers challenges to complete, awarding coins for unlocking music, artwork, videos, and more in the Museum. There’s also DLC for additional challenges, tracks from other Sonic games like Sonic Spinball, and more. For more details on the base game, check out our official review here.

Sonic Origins goes all-out in paying tribute to the iconic franchise's early years.

Regardless of how rocky the road became for Sonic the Hedgehog after a certain point, its legacy stands unshakable. Back in its earlier years, when Nintendo and Sega were going head-to-head, when Mario and Sonic were the faces of video games, when sidescrolling platformers were king- back in those days, Sonic put out one excellent game after another, and did so consistently for quite some time. Over thirty years later, even with all the ups and downs that Sega’s iconic mascot has seen, Sonic the Hedgehog is still gaming royalty.

Celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of a franchise as massive as that is no enviable task, but thankfully, Sega is more than up to it. Sonic Origins is a love letter to the franchise, its classic golden era, and its fans, and it pays tribute to its early days in style. Far from a simple compilation, it’s a much more comprehensive upgrade and a much more full-featured collection than many would have expected. Whether you’re a longtime fan hoping to relive Sonic’s glory days or a newcomer hoping to understand what the fuss is about, Sonic Origins does what it sets out to do in thoroughly convincing fashion by reminding everyone just how good the series was when it was still young.

"Whether you’re a longtime fan hoping to relive Sonic’s glory days or a newcomer hoping to understand what the fuss is about, Sonic Origins does what it sets out to do in thoroughly convincing fashion by reminding everyone just how good the series was when it was still young."

Sonic Origins brings together the four original 2D sidescrolling platformers of the series before it decided to start experimenting with other styles of gameplay. Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles are all present and accounted for here, allowing players to speed through the blue hedgehog’s classic adventures in a single package- but the collection does much more than bringing those four games together. The additional bells and whistles it bolts onto the package are a big highlight here, because there’s just so many of them.

You can play each of the four games in several ways, though the two main ways are, of course, the Classic and Anniversary modes. The former brings over the original games as is, updating them with remastered visuals and soundtracks but leaving the gameplay experience untouched (that means you have limited lives and time limits in levels), with all of it being presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio. The Anniversary mode, meanwhile, attempts to modernize the experience by switching to a 16:9 aspect ratio, removing time limits, and introducing unlimited lives.

No matter which of the two you pick, you can’t exactly go wrong. Sonic 1, 2, CD, and 3 are all excellent games (though CD’s time travelling gimmick has proven divisive over the years), and their inherent strengths have rendered them timeless- good game design is good game design, after all, no matter what ancillary features you may or may not have. The point of Sonic games has always been to explore their layered and complexly designed levels, learning their ins and outs and their many paths, and running through them again and again until you’ve figured out the best way possible to maintain speed and momentum from beginning to end the way the speedy hedgehog was always meant to. All four Sonic games in Sonic Origins had excellent movement and level design that facilitated that perfectly, that that, of course, remains as true now as it was all those years ago when these games first came out.

"Sonic 1, 2, CD, and 3 are all excellent games, and their inherent strengths have rendered them timeless- good game design is good game design, after all, no matter what ancillary features you may or may not have."

Visually, the games have been touched up excellently, each looking absolutely gorgeous in its own right with its classic pixel art, and purely from a visual perspective, I preferred Anniversary mode for its 16:9 resolution. It is a bit of a shame that there’s no way to mix and match the two- having the option to play with classic rules and limited lives without having to be stuck with a 4:3 resolution would have been a huge bonus, and it’s disappointing that that option is not available, especially since the letterbox backgrounds for anything beyond a black background screen in Classic mode are locked behind DLC.

Meanwhile, Sonic Origins also offers a Story mode, which allows you to play through all four games as a single, continuous experience in chronological fashion, which is another excellent addition that fans of the series will surely appreciate, not least because Story mode also comes with completely new animated cutscenes for all games in the collection. Sonic fans don’t need to be told how good these cutscenes can be when they’re at their best, and happily, they most definitely are at their best in Sonic Origins, and they elevate the Story mode experience greatly.

Other smart retrospective improvements and additions have also been made to the games in the collection. For instance, unlike the original releases, you can now play as both Tails and Knuckles in all the games (except Sonic CD, where Knuckles remains unplayable), which is a major addition. Being able to run through familiar levels as characters that play and control completely differently presents them in a totally different light, and is easily one of the best features of Sonic Origins.

"Having the option to play with classic rules and limited lives without having to be stuck with a 4:3 resolution would have been a huge bonus, and it’s disappointing that that option is not available, especially since the letterbox backgrounds for anything beyond a black background screen in Classic mode are locked behind DLC."

And there’s still so much more beyond that in the collection to round out the experience. There’s a Boss Rush mode that lets you take on a barrage of iconic Sonic bosses in sequence, a Mission mode that presents you with specific objectives in levels and ranks your performances at the end, an unlockable Mirror mode that allows you to play through mirrored versions of Sonic levels, online leaderboards to compete against players for best times on levels, and much more besides. One of the biggest attractions is the Museum, comprising of a collection of music, artwork, cutscenes, comics, and more, some of which is completely new content that had never been officially released until now.

A lot of this is automatically unlocked as you play more of Sonic Origins, but there’s also a whole section of the Museum that locks some of this stuff behind purchases, which are made using Coins that you earn from either the Anniversary mode, or the Boss Rush mode, or the Mission mode. Coins are another smart addition that add a ton of replayability to the game- running through boss fights and missions or repaying levels in Anniversary mode to seek out hidden Coins will surely keep plenty of completionists coming back for more.

All of this is presented neatly as a single package that excels in the presentation department as well. The main menu, for instance, is a huge world map that ropes in familiar and beloved elements from all four games in the collection, with the games themselves and the different modes being presented on it. Like everything else in the collection, it’s overflowing with love for the franchise.

"The main menu is a huge world map that ropes in familiar and beloved elements from all four games in the collection, with the games themselves and the different modes being presented on it. Like everything else in the collection, it’s overflowing with love for the franchise."

Sonic Origins is truly a celebration of Sega’s beloved hedgehog. The future of the franchise remains typically unclear – based on what we’ve seen of Sonic Frontiers so far, it could honestly go either way – but Sonic Origins reminds us that nothing will ever be able to diminish its past. When Sonic was good, it was better than almost anything else out there, and this collection celebrates those glory days in the best way possible.

Even with so many big showcases, June is fairly packed in terms of releases from horror games and ports to futuristic racers and fighters.

June is usually known as the month of big game reveals and announcements, what with State of Play, the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, PC Gaming Show and Summer Game Fest coming up. But there are still plenty of games, big and small, releasing this month that warrant your attention. Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

Diablo Immortal

After tons of “don’t you have phones” memes and outrage, Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo Immortal is out soon on iOS, Android and PC (albeit in “beta” form). Developed with NetEase and set between Diablo 2 and 3, it sees players battling the forces of evil to prevent yet another resurrection of Diablo. Six classes, each with 12 skills; end-game activities like Elder Rifts, raids, and the Legacy of Horadrim; and extensive monetization for true min-maxing via Awakening and Resonance – it’s all here. Whether it’s a trainwreck, a worthy successor or somewhere in between, Diablo Immortal releases on June 2nd.

The Quarry

Nine teenage counsellors. Summer break. Bloodthirsty locals on the hunt. David Arquette. Supermassive Games’ next game certainly has everything that a horror fan could want. Playing as each counsellor, one must make decisions to eventually survive the ordeal. Be careful though – choices have consequences, either immediately or in the future. With tons of different outcomes, a Movie Mode for directing your own series of events, and accessibility options, The Quarry promises plenty of content when it releases on June 10th for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and PC.

Sonic Origins

Relive the classic adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog when Sonic Origins releases on June 23rd for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Sonic CD are all included, remade on Sonic Mania’s Retro Engine. Missions for each game, Mirror Mode for each level, Boss Rush, and in-game museum to unlock additional content like music tracks are all included. You can experience the games in Classic Mode or Anniversary Mode with the latter having widescreen support, unlimited continues and Sonic’s drop dash from Sonic Mania. DLC practices aside, it’s looking like a good time.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

Monster Hunter Rise’s Sunbreak features a brand new region where players must battle powerful, horror movie-inspired monsters that hold dominion. A new base in Elgado Outpost offers new NPCs and facilities while Master Rank is introduced, adding new armor and weapons (along with new moves for previous monsters). New monsters include Magma Almudron, Lunagaron, Aurora Somnacanth, and Elder Dragon Malzeno in addition to returning foes like Sergios. There are also new Silkbind Attacks and Switch Skills, the Switch Skill Swap function for even more combo potential, Followers that can accompany you on certain quests and much more. Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak releases on June 30th for Nintendo Switch and PC.

Silt

As blissful as deep-sea diving may seem, Spiral Circus’s Silt exposes the sheer range of horrors that can lay in wait. Presented in stark monochrome, you play as a diver seeking to uncover ancient mysteries. You can possess nearby creatures to solve puzzles but beware the massive goliaths and other terrors that traverse the ocean. Silt is out on June 1st for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Metal Max Xeno Reborn

Cuphead is almost five years old with The Delicious Last Course DLC first revealed way back in 2018, which is crazy in retrospect. It’s now finally – barring any sudden last minute delays – releasing on June 30th for PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC and Xbox One. Promising new weapons, charms, a new playable character with Ms. Chalice, and several new bosses in the new Inkwell Isle region, the DLC could be Cuphead’s craziest and most challenging adventure yet.

MADiSON

What’s better than two horror games in the Summer? Three, of course. Bloodious Games’ MADiSON is a first person psychological horror game where you play as Luca, who wakes suddenly in a locked dark room. Forced to partake in a terrifying ritual by a demon named MADiSON, you’ll be taking pictures to reveal secrets, and ideally survive the ordeal with random events and changing puzzles keeping you on your toes. MADiSON releases on June 24th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5.

DNF Duel

Based on Nexon’s online action RPG Dungeon Fighter, DNF Duel is a 2.5D fighting game from Neople, Eighting and Arc System Works. As such, flashy combos and gorgeous visuals are to be expected with 16 characters to choose from. Slice and dice as the Ghostblade, combo enemies at range with the Gunslinger or rely on ninjutsu as the Kunoichi among other combatants. In addition to online play with rollback netcode, there’s Story Mode, Arcade Mode, Survival and Free Battle. A gallery for viewing cinematics and music along with a Glossary for learning more about the series’ setting and organizations is also included. DNF Duel is out on June 10th for PS4, PS5 and PC.

Redout 2

WipEout and F-Zero fans take note – 34BigThings’ Redout 2 is out on June 16th for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Master the controls and partake in a new Career Mode with tons of events across 36 tracks (each with a reversed variant).
Break out the Gurenge cover playlist – Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles is coming to Nintendo Switch on June 10th. Based on the first season and the Mugen Train movie arc, the 3D fighter includes an extensive story mode with exploration, boss battles and cutscenes as Tanjiro attempts to save his sister Nezuko. Versus Mode with 2v2 battles supports local and online play with 18 characters to choose from, including Academy versions of existing characters.

Disgaea 6 Complete [PS4, PS5, PC]

Nippon Ichi Software’s Disgaea 6 Complete is finally coming to PC, PS5 and PS4 worldwide on June 28th. With a max level cap of 99,999,999, quadrillions of damage and fully 3D visuals, this entry is perhaps the most divisive yet. Nevertheless, a wacky adventure with zombie Zed embarking on a journey to defeat an overwhelming force, resurrecting after each death to become a little stronger, awaits. All previously released DLC, from cosmetics to additional playable characters, is also included for free.

Sega's latest compilation features remasters of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and Sonic CD. Here's what you need to know.

Before Sonic goes full Breath of the Wild in Sonic Frontiers later this year, fans will have a chance to revisit the classics in Sonic Origins. Releasing on June 23rd, this collection offers a selection of titles from the Sega Genesis and Sega CD era with new features and content for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. It’s also had a fair amount of backlash due to the DLC but we’ll get to that. Let’s take a look at 10 things you should know before buying Sonic Origins.

Four “Remakes”

As the name implies, Sonic Origins focuses on the original Sonic the Hedgehog titles from the Sega Genesis era (which also includes the short-lived Sega CD). Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles (the combo of Sonic 3 with Sonic and Knuckles), and Sonic CD are all included in one package for $40. These are all remade on the Retro Engine, which Sonic Mania was also developed on. Along with high resolution visuals, each title also has new opening and ending animations.

Story Mode

While you could play each game separately, the new “Story Mode” ties them all together, allowing one to play them sequentially and experience the entire saga with animated cutscenes bridging each game. How does Sonic meet Tails in the lead-up to Sonic 2? How do the two know about the mysterious floating island and travel there? For that matter, how does the conclusion of Sonic 3 and Knuckles tie into Sonic CD? The new Story Mode should hopefully provide the answers to these long-burning questions.

Classic and Anniversary Modes

Each title in the collection can also be played in two separate modes – Classic and Anniversary. Classic is the original version with a 4:3 aspect ratio and limited lives. Anniversary offers the new updated resolution in wide-screen format with no limit on lives. So while the difficulty more or less stays the same for the latter, you’re now welcome to retry as many times as possible. Of course, those who insist on enjoying the games in their original, challenging states are able to do so.

Sonic Mania Developer Involved

Aside from the engine, Sonic Mania has a bit of an effect on Origins with the Drop Dash from the former being incorporated into Sonic’s moveset (but only in Anniversary Mode). That’s not all though – developer Headcannon has also played a significant role in the collection’s development. Along with assisting in pre-production for Sonic CD and co-developing Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, it also developed the Sonic 3 and Knuckles remaster. Considering how much fun Sonic Mania was, it’s good to see the developer being on board throughout Origins and contributing in such a significant way.

Boss Rush

If you want to skip through the platforming sections and simply take on each game’s bosses, then there’s good news. Each title has a new Boss Rush mode that lets you do just that. The particulars still need to be clarified though like whether there are leaderboards, if you get anything from completing them and so on and so forth. Will there be a one-hit kill option where you must defeat every boss without taking any damage? We don’t know but it should be fun to find out.

Mirror Mode

Though these are technically remakes rebuilt on the Retro Engine, they’re still the classics that fans know and love. As such, a lot of this is going to look familiar, for better or worse. If you want to mix up playthroughs of Green Hill Zone and Stardust Speedway, then there’s the new Mirror Mode. This essentially flips the level’s layout, so instead of going from left to right, you travel from right to left. It may sound deceptively simple but may also screw with your muscle memory, forcing you to adapt to the new challenge.

Mission Mode

For those looking to further spice up their runs, there’s Mission Mode. This adds several different objectives for each game in the collection, like slaying five Caterkillers and reaching the goal in Sonic the Hedgehog 1. Completing a mission confers Coins. There are four grades based on how well the objective is completed with C being the lowest and the highest being S – higher grades equals more Coins earned. With multiple missions for each game, there’s plenty to keep one busy.

Coins and Museum Content

So what do you spend the Coins on? Content from the Museum, of course. Though Sega has yet to outline all of the unlockable content, it’s confirmed that tracks from other titles (Sonic Spinball) are included. There will also likely be illustrations, wallpapers, animated cutscenes (like from Sonic CD) and other goodies to unlock. Coins can also be spent on playing special stages.

Start Dash Pack, Premium Fun Pack and Classic Music Pack DLC

Here’s where things get very confusing. The Standard Edition only includes the base game but pre-ordering will get you the Start Dash Pack for free. This includes 100 Bonus Coins to start with, a Letterbox Background for playing through Classic Mode, and Mirror Mode unlocked. Mirror Mode doesn’t seem restricted to this pack – instead, it seems that buying it will grant instant access to the same though Sega has yet to clarify.

Then there’s the Premium Fun Pack which can’t be purchased separately at present. It includes Hard Missions for Mission Mode (which, again, can presumably be unlocked through regular play), a Letterbox Background, Character Animations in the Main Menu, camera controls over the Main Menu’s Islands, and Character Animations during the Music Islands. The Classic Music Pack, which also hasn’t been priced separately, offers additional tracks from the Sega Genesis titles. You can get both of these in the Digital Deluxe Edition.

However, if you don’t pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition (which costs $45), then you’re missing out on the Start Dash Pack’s content. How much that will cost separately after launch also remains to be seen. Not exactly the most ideal breakup of DLC that a retro game collection should have but hopefully most of this will be included in-game and simply requires Coins to unlock.

PC System Requirements

For PC players, Sonic Origins requires an Intel Core i5-2400 3.1 GHz or AMD FX-8350 4.2 GHz with 6 GB of RAM and a GTX 760 or Radeon HD 7870 with 2 GB VRAM at minimum. This is to run the game at 720p resolution and 60 FPS. Recommended requirements include a Core i5-4570 3.2 GHz or Ryzen 3 1300X 3.4 GHz with 8 GB of RAM and either a GTX 770 or Radeon R9 280. You wouldn’t think four remakes of classic titles that are remarkably similar to the originals would need so much RAM but alas, here we are.

Regardless of which version of Flying Wild Hog's title that you pre-order, you'll get everything - including "Full Credits at the End."

Sega finally provided a release date for Sonic Origins, confirming that the compilation would launch on June 23rd. However, the announcement was quickly met with backlash when the publisher unveiled the various pre-order bonuses and DLC that it would have.

Basic features like “Character Animation in the Main Menu” and “Hard Missions” are locked behind the Premium Fun Pack, which is currently available only with the Digital Deluxe Edition. But if you don’t pre-order the latter, then you won’t get “Mirror Mode” or, of all things, a “Letterbox Background” included with the Start Dash Pack. Devolver Digital has responded to this, providing a handy pre-order “guide” for the upcoming Trek to Yomi on Twitter.

It notes that regardless of which version is pre-ordered, you’ll receive the base game, a 10 percent discount, an “Epic Journey Through the Underworld” (“And Back”, of course), “Stunning Visuals”, a “Remarkable Soundtrack”, and “Progressively Complex Combat.” You can even view the “Full Credits at the End”. Other features include four different endings and a One-Hit Kill Mode that unlocks when finishing the game, but these are omitted.

Sega hasn’t responded to the backlash against Sonic Origins so we’ll need to stay tuned for more details on that front. In the meantime, Trek to Yomi launches on May 5th for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and PC. It will also be available on PC Game Pass at launch.

Nearly a full year after first announcing it, Sega finally unveiled new details on Sonic Origins yesterday. Compiling remasters of four classic 2D Sonic titles and bringing additional content and enhancements, the collection is one that series fans are quite excited about. If you’re planning on playing it on PC, we now know minimum and recommended system requirements as well, courtesy of the game’s Steam page.

Unsurprisingly for a collection of old (to say the least) games, the specs aren’t too demanding. On minimum settings, you’ll need either i5 2400 or an FX 8350, along with either a GeForce GTX 750 or a Radeon HD 7790, and 6 GM of RAM. Meanwhile, on recommended settings, you’ll need either an i5 4570 or a Ryzen 3 1300X, along with either a GeForce GTX 770 or a Radeon R9 280, and 8 GB of RAM. Meanwhile, the Steam page also confirms that the collection will use Denuvo DRM on PC.

Sonic Origins launches on June 23 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
