The highlights of the first half of 2019.

It’s been a wild first six months for 2019. From min blowing remakes to exceptional sequels, from stellar indie hits to AAA releases justifying their massive budgets, from comebacks of beloved franchises to steps in new directions for others, we’ve seen a vast, vast variety of releases this year already- and we’re only just halfway through the year yet.

Looking ahead at the lineup of games awaiting their releases in the coming months, it’s clear that by the time the year is coming to an end, 2019 will have been an exceptional one for gaming. But with half of it having zipped by in a blink, before looking ahead, maybe it’s time to pause and look back. In this feature, we’ll be listing out what have been our fifteen favourite games released in 2019 so far.

Looking at just how massive the pool for selection was for us, we’ll obviously be missing out on quite a few games, so if you notice any omissions you feel deserved a place on this list, sound off in the comments section below. Also, do note that this list is presented in a random order– we’re not ranking these games. It’s not time to do that… just yet.

RESIDENT EVIL 2

Gun to our heads, if we had to pick our Game of the Year right here, right now… well, we still wouldn’t be able to do it, but Resident Evil 2 sure as hell would be one of the games leading that race. Capcom’s survival horror franchise saw a much needed revival in 2017 with Resident Evil 7, but it’s safe to say that with this year’s remake of the beloved 1998 classic, the series is back to being the best it has ever been. Resident Evil 2 strikes the perfect balance between paying loving tribute to an older game, while also being an excellent experience in its own right, and we’re more excited now about the future of this series than we have been in a long, long time.

Meanwhile, the PC market is starting to get too crowded.

The PS Vita was mostly an unfortunate failure, but it managed to marshal an enviable library of indie games and niche Japanese titles. On the former front, we already know the Switch has inherited the mantle, but what about the latter?

According to PQube, which publishes niche Japanese games, such as visual novels, the Switch has inherited that title from the Vita, too—and not a moment too soon, since it seems like all the other traditional markets for those kinds of games were becoming unviable.

“I’m really confident that that audience is going to move to Switch,” said PQube’s head of marketing Geraint Evans to Twinfinite. “I think the PC market is starting to become more challenging. It’s not necessarily a Japanese game issue, but more of an issue about the volume of content. There’s just so much stuff on there, and I’m kind of concerned that lots of people won’t be able to weather that storm…”

In fact, he argued, the Switch is already doing so, and not a moment too soon, either.

“I think it’s already on its way to do that for sure. The hardware itself is fantastic and sales on the platform are really good. As a publisher that’s kind of a relief, because we were seeing Vita going down and we were wondering what would things be like in the future.

“When we first saw the Switch we were like ‘okay, the hardware is really cool, but we don’t really know how the ecosystem is going to work,’ and then we realized ‘wow, it is selling well!’ The first things that we published on the Switch did really great.”

It’s great to hear that the niche games on Switch put out by PQube—which include the superlative Steins;Gate Elite, the new adaptation of the classic visual novel that melds the original game with its own anime adaptation to great effect—have been doing well. As someone who does enjoy visual novels, I am glad that there is a portable home for them going forward, too.

This is the will of Steins Gate.

Steins;Gate is often referred to as one of the greatest visual novels of all time, while its anime adaptation is similarly listed among the greatest anime of all time. The story of the embattled Okabe Rintaro and his band of plucky high school and college student companions stumbling upon a world altering secret, and the sudden conspiracies they find themselves thrust into, is absolutely fantastic. As a science fiction fanatic, I would confidently state that I have never yet experienced a time travel story that is better than Steins;Gate in any format. The manner in which it maintains causality and still manages to subvert expectations and upend its own narrative trajectory is truly breathtaking and exhilarating.

The great news is that Steins;Gate Elite, which is a remake of the original interspersed with anime cutscenes in order to create a more dynamic experience than the static images and cutouts one usually sees in visual novels, maintain almost everything that is good about the original, while adding a layer of immersion that until now has been impossible to experience with any degree of interactivity. Put simply, by taking scenes from the anime, and making them part of the visual novel, Steins;Gate Elite essentially feels like you are playing the anime at all times.

"Put simply, by taking scenes from the anime, and making them part of the visual novel, Steins;Gate Elite essentially feels like you are playing the anime at all times."

This can feel like a gimmick (and at first, it barely feels like that), but the kineticism it imbues the story with can have a great effect. The issue with the original Steins;Gate, as with all visual novels, was that the actual storytelling comes from static images with loads of text boxes superimposed over it. It’s kind of like reading a comic book with fewer panels and more text; but you gain a full degree of control over the story in exchange. On the other hand, the anime truly depicts every event in the story—but it comes at the cost of any control over the story.

Steins;Gate Elite removes that choice, and you now get the immersion of the anime with the control you get in the visual novel. There are changes that have had to be made—remember, the anime lacks a lot of scenes and content from the visual novel. In a lot of cases, new ones were made to account for that. In a lot of other cases, the anime scenes have been reframed, refilmed, or reshot to better account for the pacing of the visual novel. It ends up working surprisingly well, and the virtues of the anime (from its strong art to its fantastic framing of the action) plays unexpectedly well with Okabe’s inner monologue, which, if you remember, was entirely absent from the anime and only in the original visual novel.

"For all these changes to how the story is told, there are very few ones made to the story itself, and with good reason."

For all these changes to how the story is told, there are very few ones made to the story itself, and with good reason. As I already pointed out, Steins;Gate is an incredibly strong narrative. It starts off extremely slow (frustratingly slow; it’s very easy to fall off the wagon early on with how little seems to be happening for the first half dozen or so hours), but the pace soon picks up as things come to a head. Steins;Gate’s story goes to some incredibly dark and unexpected places. One particular ending is extremely messed up (and also the easiest ending to activate), while the true ending is an emotionally exhausting, harrowing experience that has you question your commitment to multiple characters in the game, and forces you to come to terms with your own limitations and defeat before finally allowing you a win.

It’s a classic, and it’s elevated even further thanks to Okabe, the main character. Okabe is your textbook otaku, pretending he lives a grander life than he does, involved and embroiled in conspiracies and secret agents, constantly talking to himself about the so-called shadowy “Organization”. He can be incredibly annoying at first, but as his insecurities and vulnerabilities come to the fore, and his love for the people in his life, and as it becomes clear just how much he is willing to do to keep those people safe, secure, and happy, you realize there’s more to him than just the tropes he appears to embody at first.

"It’s a classic, and it’s elevated even further thanks to Okabe, the main character. Okabe is your textbook otaku, pretending he lives a grander life than he does, involved and embroiled in conspiracies and secret agents, constantly talking to himself about the so-called shadowy “Organization”."

Honestly, that’s true of Steins;Gate as a whole. It has a lot of anime tropes, sometimes uncomfortably so, and there are parts that are extremely out of place with non-Japanese sensibilities that I imagine will give a lot of people pause. Cultural relativism is not an excuse for any of that, and there’s little doubt that there are ways that the game handles topics which can be uncomfortable.

But in spite of the sometimes unfortunate presence of its tropes, the core story is absolutely incredible, and unmatched. It’s harrowing, thrilling, unpredictable, and keeps you at the edge of your seat as you try to understand just how Okabe will manage to get through the tribulations he faces that no human can possibly hope to prevail against. The payoff is worth it.

While some will be disappointed at the lack of an English dub—you get English text, but the voices are Japanese only—in the end, the Japanese voice acting is absolutely incredible, and for most viewers of anime, this is not likely to be much of an issue. For others, if you find the voices grating, you at least have the option to turn them off (though doing so misses a lot of the emotional nuance of later scenes, particularly in Okabe, Kurisu, and Suzuha’s deliveries).

There are shortcomings to Steins;Gate Elite, a lot of which come from its laudable ambition of reinventing visual novels by melding anime with VN. It succeeds to a surprising degree, and succeeds enough that such shortcomings can be overlooked. If you have not already, Steins;Gate Elite is the way to experience the classic story. This, too, is the will of Steins Gate.

The Organization is on the move again!

Steins;Gate originally launched as a visual novel, but it gained widespread fame once it was adapted into an anime. Now, things are coming full circle with the release of Steins;Gate Elite, which is a remaster of the original visual novel that incorporates footage and scenes from the anime, leading to an experience that the developers describe as “a playable anime”.

With the game available now, Spike Chunsoft and 5pb have put out a brand new trailer for the game to celebrate its release. It’s mostly spoiler-free, but I do advise skipping it and going into the game blind anyway. Steins;Gate Elite is one of the greatest time travel stories across all media, and it is a story that is best experienced blind.

If you pre-ordered the game on the Switch, you will get an 8-bit recreation of Steins;Gate; PS4 owners get a brand new episode to play through, on the other hand. Steins;Gate Elite is out now for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Meanwhile, Steins;Gate Elite has a respectable launch, and Switch tops the hardware charts.

It’s Wednesday, which means the newest Media Create report for video game hardware and software charts is now out. There’s not much here that has changed over last week— as was the case then, Spider-Man ended up topping the software charts for a third week straight in Japan, which is an extremely rare great performance for a western game in the land of the rising sun.

These legs came in spite of new releases, such as Steins;Gate Elite, which saw the PS4 version coming in at second place, and the Switch version at fourth place. It’s important to note, however, that the difference in unit sales between the two versions was a little over 100 units, which is basically statistical noise.

In terms of hardware, you have three guesses to figure out who won. Yes, it was the Switch yet again, with slightly over 37,000 units sold (its worst showing in a good while, to be fair). The PS4, with just under 16,000 units, was second place, while the 3DS, with under 8,000 units, was third.

You can check out the full charts below.

Software

Marvel’s Spider-Man – PS4 – 38,065/244,051

Steins;Gate Elite – PS4 – 13,433/New

Minecraft – Switch – 13,317/291,062

Steins;Gate Elite – Switch – 13,305/New

Splatoon 2 – Switch – 13,205/2,631,538

We already knew that Steins;Gate Elite’s western release will be pushed into next year, after its delay in Japan earlier this year. Now we know exactly when next year we can get our hands on the new interactive anime/visual novel hybrid retelling of the beloved original. Spike Chunsoft confirmed on Twitter today that Steins;Gate Elite launches for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on February 19 in North America and Europe.

The publisher also confirmed a Steins;Gate Elite Limited Edition, which will come with a cloth poster, a 100+ page hardcover storyboard book, and a custom outer box— things that fans of the science fiction visual novel will be sure to want to get for themselves.

Steins;Gate Elite seeks to evolve the visual novel genre by making it an interactive, playable cartoon. It takes scenes from the anime, as well as new ones made specifically for the game itself, and uses them to retell the story of the original title. Thankfully, if you haven’t jumped into the series already, you are just a few months away from the release of Elite in the west.

Steins;Gate Elite marks the very first time that Steins;Gate will be playable on a Nintendo system, but Spike Chunsoft are sweetening the pot even further with Steins;Gate 8-bit. This will be an 8-bit game that is included with all pre-orders of the Switch version of the game, and is essentially Steins;Gate in 8-bit (exactly as the name says).

Created in the vein of a Famicom game, the bonus game follows the same plot, but in an 8-bit format. Spike Chunsoft released a brand new trailer showing off what it will be like, which you can see for yourself below. There’s an odd charm to seeing Okarin, Kurisu, Daru, and Mayushi rendered as 8-bit sprites, I have to admit. For long time fans of the visual novel, such as myself, the 8-bit rendition of the game certainly poses a convincing case to consider getting the Switch version of the game over the others.

Steins;Gate Elite launches this September for PS Vita, PS4, and Nintendo Switch in Japan. In North America and Europe, it will release in early 2019 for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

It seems like it is the will of Steins;Gate to make us wait till next year.

Steins;Gate Elite, the upcoming enhanced remake of what is widely held to be one of the greatest visual novels of all time, was due to launch in the west for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC this year. However, now, in the wake of the Japanese release of the game getting delayed by a few months, the localization has, too.

Spike Chunsoft announced today at the Anime Expo that Steins;Gate Elite will now launch in the west in 2019. The game, as you might remember, expands on the visual novel format by incorporating scenes from the anime into the story seamlessly. New, original scenes for the parts of the story that did not make it into the anime adaptation will also be produced for Elite.

So- that’s a bummer, especially since I was really looking forward to going through Steins;Gate again. That said, I suppose the delay cannot be helped. As the mad scientist Hyouyin Kyouma would say, this is the will of Steins Gate.

Steins;Gate Elite, the expanded version of what is commonly regarded as the greatest visual novel ever made, has been confirmed for a western release. Spike Chunsoft announced at GDC today that they will be bringing the game to North America and Europe this year for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC. It looks like the Vita version of the game will forever stay in Japan.

Steins;Gate Elite takes the original visual novel, but expands upon it by including scenes from the (equally acclaimed) anime based on it, as well as some new and original scenes developed specifically for the game—in other words, it is a new form of a visual novel that has not been achieved before. It is also the first time Nintendo owners will be able to play the game (Steins;Gate has previously been available on Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and PC).

Truly, it sounds like this was the will of Steins Gate.

Everything you need to know about Steins;Gate Elite.

Remaking the classic visual novel from 2009, Steins;Gate Elite is an updated version of the sci-fi story originally told in 2009 by 5pb. and Nitroplus. The game is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and Nintendo Switch. Instead of the stills from the original title, Steins;Gate Elite uses footage from the original anime adaptation, and partnered with White Fox to create new animation to present the game entirely animated. The result is a visual novel that is fully animated throughout the runtime of the game, creating a true playable anime. Steins;Gate Elite launches in Japan on March 15, 2018.

A localization has still not been announced. First print runs of the game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita will include a copy of spin off title Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram, which marks the first time the side-story title will come to PlayStation 4. Meanwhile, first print runs of the Nintendo Switch version will include a brand new game, Famicolle ADV Steins;Gate, which adapts the story once again into a classic Famicom adventure game like was seen in Japan on the Famicom back in the day.

+ Quick Jump To

1. Development

2. Story

3. Gameplay

4. Characters

Development

Series creator Chiyoshukura Shikura had ambitions to evolve the visual novel genre, and took influence from the game series Yarudora, A series of FMV visual novels which Sony released in Japan in 1998, themselves taking inspiration from titles like Dragon’s Lair. Like Steins;Gate, Yarudora was a visual novel with branching paths based off of player choices throughout the game.

Shikura appreciated how those titles blended the strengths of a visual novel and anime, but realized that to be feasible in today’s market that such a project would be incredibly resource draining and time intensive. The decision was obvious to Shikura from there that to make such a game today, there would be a need to reuse and recycle as much animation as possible, leading to what the project eventually became.

The story of Steins;Gate was chosen because there was a Steins;Gate anime adaptation that was already completed, and had covered a large part of the story already. Of course this was not without its challenges either. The animation studio that originally created the anime adaptation, White Fox was brought on board to work on new animations to cover pieces of the story not included in the anime.

In addition, player interaction had to be considered. Animation had to be created for the player pulling out their cell phone in a variety of situations, and the user interface had to be seamlessly integrated with the animation. The animation of some scenes had to be deconstructed, altered and pieced out to have characters move and talk separately, since multiple characters moving and speaking at once would have been at odds with the player advancing the story with each input.

Story

Given that Steins;Gate is a visual novel with minimal gameplay, it’s actually very had to talk about its story without spoiling most of it, but let’s try. Steins;Gate follows the story of college student Rintaro Okabe, and his friends, who run a hobbyist ‘lab’ for running science experiments and inventing useless gizmos they call future gadget. Okabe is a piece of work, who fancies himself a mad scientist, and likes to pretend that a nameless, shadowy organization is tracking his every move, and trying to get to him.

But when Okabe ends up inventing what he thought would be a harmless device- a microwave that can be controlled by telephone- and it ends up having the power to transport things through time, he suddenly finds his life veering dangerously close to the delusions and fantasies he has always held. Now fighting against a shadowy organization that will stop at nothing to get their hands on his time travel tech, and trying to protect his friends and their very identities, Okabe ends up traipsing through time itself on an epic odyssey.

Gameplay

As a visual novel, the interaction the player has within the world of Steins;Gate Elite is relatively limited. Players proceed through the story, advancing the action with an input and see events play out. At points in the story, the player will have influence over specific decisions, such as an action taken by Okabe or who he calls at a specific moment. These decisions are usually routed through the “Phone Trigger” system in the original game and that system is likely to be preserved for this remake.

Okabe will be called or sent text messages throughout the story, and the player driven choices to pick up or ignore those calls, to reply to a text message and how they choose to do it, or if they do at all. Though on a few occasions response will be necessary, most of the time it’s player driven and those choices drive which of the six paths down the story players will go.

Characters

Players take control of an eccentric young man named Rintaro Okabe, who acts as the protagonist throughout. He founds the Future Gadget Laboratory in Akihabara and as founder titles himself as Lab Member No.001. He refers to himself as a mad scientist, and shows an outwardly manic persona.

Childhood friend of Okabe, Mayuri Shiina is Lab Member No. 002, despite being a bit childish. The young woman lost her grandmother to strange circumstances before the start of the story, and Okabe created his entire persona around keeping her from wallowing in grief.

Lab Member No. 003 is skilled computer programmer and hacker extraordinaire Iradu “Daru” Hashida. The two met in high school, and is a first year Tokyo Denki University student like Okabe, who can sometimes annoy Daru with his over the top delusions. When he’s not working with computers, he’s deep in Otaku culture.

Okabe’s assistant is Kurisu Makise, Lab Member No. 004. She’s a neuroscience researcher who has already had her work published in an academic journal, making her something of a prodigy at her young age. She can be prickly but is easily embarrassed when referred to as a tsundere.

Moeka Kiryu, Lab Member No. 005 meets Okabe in Akihabara when he’s looking for an old IBN 5100 computer. The 20 year old woman is incredibly shy, even sending someone right in front of her a text message instead of speaking to them.

Luka Urushibara is something of a pupil to Okabe. Faris Nyannyan works at the same cafe as Shiina. The final Lab Member No. 008 is Suzuha Amane, who seems to dislike Makise for unknown reasons. She’s searching for her father in Akihabara while working part-time for Okabe’s landlord.
