While writer Bartosz Sztybor didn’t offer any specifics on the story at an Anime Expo panel, he did confirm that it would be sad. Emphasizing that CD Projekt RED as a whole always wants to write “character-driven” stories, he added, “But the other thing is that we are a company from Poland. I’m from Poland, and people in Poland are sad. They are born sad, they die sad, so I just wanted to make the whole world sad.”

Unfortunately, he doesn’t desire to shake things up and write a happy story. “When people are sad, I feel a bit happy,” he said. Long story short, if you’re walking into the anime expecting to have your heart broken, just like its predecessor, Sztybor has you covered.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will premiere on Netflix, so stay tuned for further updates. Cyberpunk 2077 will also receive a follow-up with Project Orion. CD Projekt RED recently confirmed that the sequel is in the pre-production phase, with job listings indicating it would be first-person and aim for the “most realistic and reactive crowd system to date.” However, studio co-CEO Michał Nowakowski believes it could take four to five years to develop.

On the bright side, the original will receive a brand-new update. Further details, including a release date, are pending. However, the developer has confirmed it will be similar in scope to Update 2.2.

Based on the few hints offered, there’s a new cast of characters, including a child with a camera. At Anime Expo 2025, showrunner, producer and writer Bartosz Sztybor confirmed that while “David’s story might be over, there’s plenty more to discover in Night City.

“And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD Projekt RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we’ve done before.” Other notable staff include Kanno Ichigo (Edgerunners, Promare) as lead character designer, with Masahiko Otsuka adapting the screenplay (Promare, Gurren Lagann).

Since it recently entered production, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 doesn’t have a premiere date, so stay tuned for more updates. The original debuted in 2022 and immediately became a hit while spurring interest in Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt RED would also release a patch with some crossover content, including David’s outfit.

The developer is currently working on a sequel, codenamed Project Orion. There’s no release date, but Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith confirmed it would feature a new city and the return of Night City.

It would mark the second collab for Studio Trigger’s popular anime, as Lucy will join the roster of Guilty Gear Strive this Summer as part of Season Pass 4. The content is unknown, but if it’s anything like Honkai: Star Rail’s upcoming Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works collab, we could see Edgerunners characters as new Resonators.

Last year, for instance, we got Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a widely praised anime developed by Studio Trigger in collaboration with CD Projekt RED, and it seems the two companies are collaborating on another project- though details on it are next to non-existent right now.

Speaking during a recent investor presentation, when asked about how CD Projekt RED is planning on further expanding the Cyberpunk franchise beyond games, chief commercial officer Michał Nowakowski pointed to the recently-confirmed live action project being made in collaboration with Anonymous Content, before suggesting that other similar collaborations are in the works that can’t be officially announced just yet.

“Yes, we do have plans,” he said (transcription via VGC). “That’s why we have started cooperating with Anonymous Content. We want things to happen.

“Alot is happening, a lot is planned. Trigger was in 2018 but [Edgerunners] started in 2022, so for a number of years we did not speak about this because it wasn’t ready. There are plans we’d rather keep quiet until there is something to speak about, until there is really something to discuss, some concreate announcement.

“When the time comes, we’ll tell you. I know I keep repeating it, but yes, the general direction is this – to go this way, this is strategically important for us.”

Meanwhile, chief creative officer Adam Badowski added that CD Projekt is complying with rules regarding official announcement in place at the partners it’s working with- which, in this case, is Studio Trigger again.

“What’s also important is that Trigger, our partner, has certain rules for announcing projects and we have to be compliant with this,” he said.

What exactly CDPR and Studio Trigger are working on together remains to be seen, but it’s unlikely to be a direct follow-up to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, with CDPR having suggested as much in the past.

Meanwhile, the company has also confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold over 25 million units worldwide, while Phantom Liberty sold over 3 million units in its first week. Cyberpunk 2, currently codenamed Project Orion, has also entered the early stages of production.

The trailer, titled the NSFW trailer, also features warnings for viewers who might be sensitive to strobing light effects.

Produced in collaboration with anime studio Studio Trigger, Edgerunners tells the story of David Martinez—a street kid who is just trying to survive in the dystopian future presented by Cyberpunk. After going through a personal tragedy, Martinez decides to become a mercenary outlaw—an edgerunner.

Talent behind the production of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners include director Hiroyuki Imaishi (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Promare), and animation director Yoh Yoshinari (Little Witch Academia, BNA: Brand New Animal). The screenplay has been adapted by Yoshiki Usa (Gridman, Promare), and Masahiko Otsuka (Star Wars: Visions – The Elder).

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is about a Street Kid struggling to survive in Night City. With no other choice left, he turns to body modification and becomes an edgerunner, taking on jobs as a mercenary in the city. Rafał Jaki (of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Witcher: Ronin fame) serves as the showrunner and executive producer with the anime being worked on since 2018.

Other talent includes director Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Promare) and animation director Yoh Yoshinari (Little Witch Academia, BNA: Brand New Animal) with the screenplay adapted by Yoshiki Usa (Gridman series, Promare) and Masahiko Otsuka (Star Wars: Visions – The Elder). The soundtrack is by none other than composer Akira Yamaoka of Silent Hill fame. Stay tuned for more details on the show when it premieres in the coming months.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Google Stadia. Its first paid expansion is slated for 2023.

Directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi of Gurren Lagann and Promare fame, Cyberpunk Edgerunners is a standalone story about a Street Kid turned Edgerunner. With “everything to lose”, his survival hinges on extensively modifying his body with cyber technology and becoming an outlaw. The anime will run for 10 episodes and also has Akira Yamaoka of Silent Hill fame composing the soundtrack.

Whether an air date for Cyberpunk Edgerunners will be provided during Geeked Week or not remains to be seen. Information has been sparse since the initial announcement but it’s still slated to air this year. Stay tuned for more details when they’re available.
