A new leak claims that another AAA game is in the works at Quantic Dream's Paris studio, based on 2013's The Dark Sorcerer tech demo.

Quantic Dream recently announced Star Wars: Eclipse, which has the potential to be the studio’s biggest game ever, based on the plain and simple fact that it’s a Star Wars project- though it seems that the studio has other irons in the fire as well. Over on Twitter, leaker @AccNgt – who previously correctly leaked information on the aforementioned Star Wars: Eclipse – shared potential details on a second AAA project that is currently in the works.

Allegedly, this second project is in the works at Quantic Dream’s Paris studio, and is going to be a “humor-based’ game (though it’s unclear what exactly that means). The leak claims that the game is going to be based on the “The Dark Sorcerer” tech demo Quantic Dream debuted for the PS4 back at E3 2013 (which you can view below), and will be “more advanced than Star Wars: Eclipse (though again, it’s unclear exactly what that means).

Interestingly, the game is allegedly going to be a cross-gen title and will also launch for PC, though the former is still subject to change. Similar to previous Quantic Dream titles, it will focus on narrative interactivity (whereas leaks have claimed that Eclipse is going to be a full-fledged open world action-adventure game), and will have a non-linear story written by Quantic Dream boss David Cage, set in a medieval fantasy world.

Interestingly, the leak claims that the project’s development team is struggling to recruit developers, similar to what reports have said of Star Wars: Eclipse as well (which has allegedly already run into development troubles)- allegedly due to the controversies Quantic Dream has attracted over the last couple of years due to multiple reports of toxic workplace culture.

This is, of course, an unverified leak, so be sure to treat it as such. That said, Quantic Dream is no stranger to making full games based on ideas stemming from tech demos. Detroit: Become Human, for instance, started life as the 2012 PS3 tech demo “Kara”.

The Beyond: Two Souls developer will be making an announcement to kickstart 2015.

Of all the AAA developers that 2014 has been filled with, including those who hyped games releasing in 2015, one notable name that’s been missing is Quantic Dream. The Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls developer made news with its demonstration of The Dark Sorcerer on the PS4, showcasing the new technology it would be using for PS4 releases.

Since then, there’s been barely a peep out of them aside from a few blurbs from David Cage. That silence may be broken when 2015 starts as the developer posted on its official Facebook page: “Some great news coming in January!”

This could mean any number of things, including an official announcement on the developer’s first big PS4 title. Conversely, it could just be a port of Beyond: Two Souls for the PS4. Regardless, it’ll be something and we can’t wait to find out. What are you hoping for this January? Let us know in the comments.

Quantic Dream head was surprised with the quality of Sony's next gen console.

In a recent interview with key Sony figures including Andrew House, Mark Cerny and Tetsuo Sumii, Jeuxvideo interviewed Quantic Dream head David Cage who professed his surprise for the console’s power, stating that it allowed for things that were previously impossible with the PS3.

“The PlayStation 4 is a machine on which we’ve been working for a little more than a year now, at Quantic. Honestly, the machine surprised us. We obviously knew that it would be much more powerful than a PlayStation 3, that we were going to be able to do things that were impossible before…

“But now, really, the machine – on a first attempt, on this Dark Sorcerer demo – on which we worked quickly – gave us a level of quality that we didn’t expect. See, it’s a truly HD picture, it’s truly anti-aliasing, a picture that’s extremely stable, extremely fixed, and, more importantly, it throws polygons everywhere, there’s a rendering quality that’s rather unexpected and I think we’re really at the early stages.

“I think people will be very surprised by the quality of the console and to what extent it will be a progress compared to the PlayStation 3. One of the biggest differences between the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 is that PlayStation 3 was quite arid in terms of accessibility for the programmers. It’s an architecture that was quite uncommon so it took quite some time for developers to really be able to use all the power of the console.”

Cage is currently working on an unannounced game for the PS4, having recently released Beyond: Two Souls for the PlayStation 3.

Beyond: Two Souls creator hoping to "make something really impressive".

Fresh off of the release of Beyond: Two Souls for the PlayStation (check out our review here), Quantic Dream’s David Cage will now be focusing his efforts on projects for Sony’s next generation PlayStation 4 console. While not a full-fledged project, The Dark Sorcerer has been making waves over the past few months due to its highly detailed visuals and quirky approach.

But that’s just the beginning, according to Cage in conversation with Tech Radar. “This is basically Beyond’s engine, and we were so excited with what we could achieve. Some people were really impressed with the Dark Sorcerer but this is just the beginning, it’s the minimum quality you can get on the console.

“It was done with a very small team, a very small amount of time and small resources. Now we have a full team and we hope to make something really impressive.”

Rumours of the PS4 project – from being called Kara to Singularity – still abound. We’ll need to wait for further details, but it appears that developers aren’t even close to getting started with exploiting the PS4’s hardware.

David Cage talks about giving people what they want, even if they don't know they want it.

Quantic Dream may currently have its hands full with the upcoming Beyond: Two Souls, releasing on October 8th in North America and October 11th in Europe, but the developer is plenty busy with its next-generation project which it promises is different from both Beyond and Heavy Rain.

Speaking to Game Informer (transcribed by CVG), director David Cage stated, “We have a small team working on this next-gen project, on the tech, on the concepts and art. It’s very very exciting, something different from Beyond and Heavy Rain; building on the same grounds, but in a very different way.

“People should expect to be surprised again, because this is really what we try to do with each game – not give people what they expect, [but] give them something they want maybe without knowing this is what they want.”

Could it be The Dark Sorcerer, the tech demo which debuted at the PlayStation 4’s initial reveal event or is that the basis for something else entirely different? We’ll find out in coming year.

A recent job listing seems to corroborate those claims.

After a job listing by Quantic Dream for an Android programmer was found by NeoGAF, another listing has emerged for a UI artist/designer on the developer’s official website.

The job description states that, “This position involves designing and creating 2D artwork and graphics for the UI Interface as well as other 2D items on various mobile and console platforms.”

As of now, Quantic Dream is currently busy with Beyond: Two Souls which sees Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe starring in the tale of the psychic/ghost talker/bad-ass combat girl Jodie Foster. Beyond: Two Souls is currently releasing on PlayStation this October 8th in North America.

Quantic Dream is also busy working on a brand-new PlayStation 4 title, most likely featuring a new engine as showcased in their demonstration of The Dark Sorcerer at E3 2013. The game might feature multiplayer but no other details are available as of now. Stay tuned for more.

David Cage shows off an uncharacteristically quirky tech demo for PS4.

After their ‘faces’ tech demo back in February during the PS4 console reveal, as well as because of some rather pretentious statements he has made (and because of the general tone of all of his games altogether), it is perhaps easy to see David Cage as a man who takes himself a bit too seriously, and to therefore expect the same kind of traits from his work.

It therefore came as a pleasant surprise when his tech demo to demonstrate some of the tech and capabilities of the PS4 was so gleefully funny, intelligently and subtly humorous, and so self aware. Whereas this tech demo, titled “The Dark Sorcerer,” is almost certainly not a game (nor is it intended to be one), it still served as a good demonstration of the PS4’s abilities, while also showing off a completely different side of David Cage altogether.

Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more E3 coverage!
