Kalypso has released a new version of Tropico 6 specifically for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, combining the base game with all of its DLC.

The tropical island management builder Tropico 6 has put joy on the faces of many players since its launch, and now PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners can finally its offerings as well, with Kalypso having released Tropico 6 – Next Gen Edition.

The new edition, which is currently available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, gives players 4K visuals and combines the base game with all of its post-launch DLC, including The Llama of Wall Street and the El Prez Pack. The new edition also features a revised research system focusing on the political aspects of being a ruler, along with four-player multiplayer.

The full version will release this fall.

It’s time to get political, as Tropico 6 comes to consoles thanks the the Xbox Game Preview service. Publisher Kalypso Media released a trailer to coincide with the release. Though being basically early access, it does come with some drawbacks.

Players who pick up Tropico 6 on Xbox One as is will have access to the full single player part of the game. So you can build your empire with your customized El Presidente through the game’s four time periods. However, there is no multiplayer functionality. So all forms of muliplayer are not there, nor is the random map generator. For that part of the game you’ll have to wait. It seems they will add those when the full version of the game releases later this year.

Tropico 6 is available now for PC and Xbox One via Xbox Game Preview. The PlayStation 4 and full Xbox One versions will release later this fall. If you’re curious about the game, you can check out our review of the PC version here.

Four new titles also added to the Vault for Origin Access Basic subscribers.

Say what you will about Electronic Arts, but EA/Origin Access continue to be a solid deal. To further sweeten the pot for Origin Access Premier subscribers, EA has been adding more recent big-time releases to its Vault. This week, we get Haemimont Games’ Tropico 6 and The Bearded Ladies’ Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden.

Tropico 6 sees El Presidente returning to prominence ane managing a slew of islands across different eras. Election speeches are back, the Caribbean music is as swanky as ever, and the freedom to rule your way is fairly strong. Check out GamingBolt’s review here.

Meanwhile, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden presents real-time isometric exploration, but turn-based tactical battles. Commanding a squad of three, it’s possible to ambush your enemies or sneak by them undetected. Along with a free challenge mode, the title also has a free demo available on Steam.

If neither of those suits your taste, then there are four other titles which are also available to Origin Access Basic subscribers. These are Into The Breach, FTL: Faster Than Light, Shift Quantum, and Detention. Check out the Origin Access updates page for more information.

El Presidente rises again in this return to form for the series.

City builders have had somewhat of an odd history as of late. While titles like Cities: Skylines continue to receive downloadable content, others like Frostpunk appear every now and then with their own post-apocalyptic hooks. This isn’t including all the early access titles that can be rather hit or miss in their execution. Tropico fits into the category of long-standing city-builders that seen sequels in an industry of changing trends and platform updates, much like Ubisoft Blue Byte’s Anno series. There’s just something about playing as a dictator figure, taking in the sun-kissed beaches, transporting cigars and crops to the waiting world and waddling with just the right amount of corruption to keep things going.

Tropico 6, developed by Limbic Entertainment instead of Haemimont Games, is a tribute to that life-style. It creates a raucous, mostly hilarious atmosphere while implementing a bevy of construction, political management, economic wrangling and superpower-dealing tools to keep you engaged from one era to the next. Catering to veterans of the series while keeping first-time players coming back for more is a tough task for any franchise, let-alone a strategy game like this. But I believe Tropico 6 pulls it off with aplomb even with a few rough edges here and there.

"The music is also great – even if some tracks land better than others, that atmosphere of lounging around in the Caribbean is expertly fulfilled here."

You are, as always, El Presidente. You rule over the islands of Tropico, whether through benevolence or back-handed dealings. Your job is to keep the people happy and/or voting for you. You can scrape by on their measly demands, suppressing rebellions and storing money in your off-shore back account. Either way, the starting goal is to expand, laying down more buildings and accruing enough industry to keep expanding. Right off the bat, Tropico 6 entices you with its bright, clean-cut visuals and while they may not be the most cutting edge on the market, they convey the atmosphere of a banana republic very well. Trucks are constantly moving back and forth between ranches, tanneries, mines and plantations. Ports are buzzing as exports are sent out and come back with that sweet revenue. Palm trees dot the landscape against an idyllic skybox.

El Presidente can be customized from the outset in terms of makeup, hair type, gender, hair colour, hats and whatnot though several clothes and options are locked behind certain goals. Special traits provide bonuses that can augment towards your overall approach. The Charismatic trait is perhaps the best for beginners since it increases standing with factions and relationships with Superpowers. The Corrupt trait is good increasing funds to one’s off-shore bank account at the risk of crime safety while Workaholic provides increased building efficiency at the risk of job happiness.

Designing your personal palace is the crown on top of the gaudy crookedness that El Presidente represents. There’s just something satisfying about having classic Fountains and a Flamingo Pond on one’s front yard with Glass Pyramids adorning the roof. Starting up some missions and following the story of El Presidente and his loyal aide Penultimo is a good way to get into the game’s mechanics. However, you’ll want to peruse the extensive tutorial system first since it’s good for explaining everything that Tropico 6 has to offer. Penultimo’s sniveling is only accentuated by his excellent voice acting – it strides that fine line between annoying and endearing. The music is also great – even if some tracks land better than others, that atmosphere of lounging around in the Caribbean is expertly fulfilled here.

"Make no mistake – there’s a lot to manage in Tropico 6."

Choose the first mission and you’ll start in the Colonial Era, the first of four eras, as a governor looking to extend your mandate with The Crown. You build plantations, connect them by roads, take on various demands (with your choice of reward) and gain standing with the available factions. You usually have a mandate for each demand and over time, Dual Demands – where you must pick a faction’s needs over the other – will crop up. Research can eventually be conducted into various Edicts and to gain access to new buildings.

The Edicts themselves can introduce some relatively “interesting” twists to your game. Penal Colony will increase the immigration rate by 50 percent but also increase the chance of each immigrant being a criminal by a whopping 300 percent. Why is this beneficial? Because of the monthly payments to your corrupt regime, of course! Unlocking more Edicts is a matter of accruing knowledge by building libraries, colleges and schools.

Make no mistake – there’s a lot to manage in Tropico 6. You have to build bunk houses and apartments for your workers to properly commune to and fro. Providing them with fun and entertainment (taverns, circuses, restaurants, etc) that are also in line with their living conditions is similarly important.

Buildings can be upgraded to have different benefits or you could increase the overall budget allocated. Each worker in a building is its own separate entity and can either be hired from among the locales or brought in from abroad for a price. The overall happiness of your citizens which is determined by their livelihood, available accommodations, entertainment and actions taken by El Presidente. For example, taxing Capitalists will generally make them less enticed to vote for you.

Taking advantage of trade route offers for exports, purchasing licenses to expand on available routes, keeping the relevant Superpower happy (and hopefully doling out financial aid when you build an embassy for them) – these are all factors in ensuring your island prospers. You generally want to find a nice balanced approach, whether it’s building enough watchtowers to satisfy the Militarists or keeping emissions safe enough to ensure the Environmentalists aren’t on your back. Fortunately, each faction and Superpower has their own unique leader with some genuinely likable (and loathsome) personalities so these decisions don’t exist in a vacuum.

Another twist are the raids that can be conducted for specific resources. Building the most basic raid building, a Pirate Cove, can you net some treasure, new workers and items like fish and tobacco. Want to sabotage a Superpower? The Commando Garrison is the ticket and can be used to intimidate your neighbors as well. As raids are conducted, World Wonders will open up and can be built to confer even more benefits to your islands. Stonehenge will keep pollution down in an area while the Eiffel Tower provides increased range for radios and TV broadcasts, ensuring the propaganda flows far and wide on Tropico. Of course, the benefits they provide in terms of tourism and entertainment are also beneficial.

All of this contributes to your approval rating. Depending on how much your populace likes you, they’ll vote for you in the next election. Election Speeches make a return in this regard as you highlight your regime’s strengths, promise improvements in certain areas or just blame a rival Superpower for their invisible meddling. Clever writing – like fun being doubled and lack of fun being halved, thus ensuring four times the current amount of fine – make the speeches a treat.

"If you want to stay in power through any means necessary, Tropico 6 will enable you quite well."

Managing all of the above is thankfully easy to the Almanac which indicates your ratings on Fun, Hunger, Happiness and whatnot while also indicating your approval rating among your citizens. You can also keep track of your spending, the standings of different factions and so on.

If you’re good to your people, then you’ll remain in power for a long time. But it wouldn’t be a dictator simulator without a bit of spice. Bring in the criminals, pay off the ballot, suppress the revolutionaries, put more funding into the military and kill anyone who has even the slightest inkling of rebellion. Different ultimatums can be issued by factions if you ignore their needs for too long, which can lead to an automatic loss. Revolts from an unhappy citizenry also crop up if your approval dips. If you want to stay in power through any means necessary, Tropico 6 will enable you quite well.

Admittedly, there’s a good range of options for building the banana republic of your dreams. Tropico 6’s pacing also feels well measured, neither too hurried nor too slow. Buildings generally don’t take long to construct (though you can increase game speed for your own convenience), interesting events occur at a decent clip and mandates feel fairly generous in the amount of time provided. I never found myself running out of building space or limited by the general design of the islands. And as such, you can always head into Sandbox mode to select a variety of different archipelagos with varying land mass sizes, along with the ability to adjust win conditions, starting populations and much more for your own taste.

"What it does is cater to the faithful fan while opening up enough to new players curious to investigate all the fuss."

Interface design is relatively straightforward. It may take some time to know where everything is and to navigate different tabs to keep track of various resources but it’s easy to get a handle of. There are 15 maps in total for all the missions – it may not be the longest “campaign” but all of those maps plus an additional 15 are available for play in sandbox mode. The game’s mod support is still up in the air, unfortunately. If that’s a major factor, then you might want to wait for more information before making a purchase.

However, at it core, Tropico 6 offers enough value for money and so many ways to rule that it’s a blast to get into. It’s not reinventing the wheel when it comes to city-builders or introducing grand sweeping new features. What it does is cater to the faithful fan while opening up enough to new players curious to investigate all the fuss. It’s a smorgasbord of management, politics, transportation, violence, corruption and speeches that celebrates the insanity that the series is known for. Viva la Tropico, indeed. Just go easy on the killing every now and then.

If you’ve heard about Limbic Entertainment’s Tropico 6 and thought of giving it a whirl before launch, there’s good news. The open beta for the game is currently live on Steam, and will be available until tomorrow. Along with the tutorial and all eras (except for the Modern era being limited), you get to try out six missions and 11 sandbox maps.

There’s even support for up to four players in multiplayer. Tropico 6 isn’t just a straight-up sequel though – it offers an entire archipelago to manage. Players will also busy themselves based on how satisfied their people are. You can send out your agents to steal World Wonders because, well, why not?

Tropico 6 was slated to launch in January but was subsequently delayed to March 29th on PC. You can continue playing the beta up till launch if you pre-order the full release. All in all, this is a good way to see if it’s worth your time. Tropico 6 is also slated for release on Xbox One and PS4 in Q2/Q3 2019.

Whether you're a demon hunter or samurai, March is full of big names.

March is nearly upon us and that means another month of high-profile releases. We’ve been waiting on some of these games since their announcement at E3 2018 and they’re finally upon us. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the top 10 games of March 2019.

Devil May Cry 5

Ever since Devil Trigger exploded on the scene, we’ve been counting the days until Devil May Cry 5 was in our hands. Picking up after Devil May Cry 4 (and not DmC: Devil May Cry, thank goodness), the sequel sees Red Grave City invaded by a powerful demonic force. It’s up to Nero, Dante and a new playable character V to set things right. Nero has obtained some significant upgrades since the last game with the Devil Breaker, an item capable of unleashing different abilities depending on the equipped prosthetic. Dante can use his motorcycle that transforms into dual buzz-saws as a weapon and V can…summon familiars? That’s the Devil May Cry we know and love – it’s out on March 8th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

It’s not Dark Souls. It’s not Bloodborne. It’s not even Tenchu (FromSoftware clarified that a full stealth playthrough is not possible after all). So what is it? Set in a fantastical 16th century Sengoku Japan, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a combination of fast-paced combat, skillful swordplay and wild cards like an axe and grappling hook hidden in a prosthetic arm. Focusing on an old samurai fighting to rescue his lord, Sekiro takes us on a sprawling journey filled with intrigue and adventure. What horrors await though and how does resurrection really work? We’ll find out on March 22nd when it releases for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn

A remake of Kirby’s Epic Yarn, which launched for the Wii and pretty much kickstarted the yarn-based graphical style, Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn is coming to the Nintendo 3DS on March 8th. It will have new modes, new power-ups and even lets you play as Meta Knight and King Dedede in different sub-games. Co-op has been removed having an awesome platformer with a lovable art-style like this on the go works nicely.

Dead or Alive 6

Team Ninja’s Dead or Alive series has been fairly dormant since the design shift in Dead or Alive 5. Dead or Alive 6 continues that trend, offering even more gorgeous environments and sharp characters to go with new mechanics. Simple, devastating combos are possible with the Fatal Rush and new Break Blows can be performed when the gauge is full. With 26 characters, a quest mode, story campaign and the same dynamic gameplay as its predecessor, Dead or Alive 6 is looking to be an intriguing return for an iconic franchise.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

So Anthem was kind of “eh” and Destiny 2 is kind of “meh” but hey, at least The Division 2 is almost here. Moving from the snowy reaches of Manhattan to the overgrown and chaotic Washington D.C., The Division 2 still offers some tight cover-based shooting and loot to collect. Along with three Dark Zone districts and new civilian settlements that can be contributed to, there’s also a significant focus on end-game with the Black Tusk faction, Specializations with their own unique abilities and weapons, and Invaded missions that pose tougher challenges. The Division 2 arrives on March 15th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Yoshi’s Crafted World

Not one but two cutesy platformers in March? We’re fine with that. Yoshi’s Crafted World from Good-Feel is coming to the Nintendo Switch on March 29th and sees the Yoshis on an adventure to restore the Sundream Stone. Though it’s essentially a 2.5D platformer, the game mixes gameplay up by allowing objects in the background and foreground to be interacted with. The “flip” mechanic has been toned down since its initial reveal and it’s now more of an additional run through a level for collectibles. In its current demo though, Yoshi’s Crafted World is tons of fun and we can’t wait to dig into the final game.

The Sinking City

Known better for its Sherlock Holmes games, Frogwares embarks into the realm of cosmic horror with The Sinking City. Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s work, The Sinking City focuses on detective work and investigation – how certain quests are resolved will depend on the number of clues that players can suss out. The story sees private investigator Charles W. Reed looking into the cause of a flood that hits New England, driving everyone mad. Dare we say the one who lays dreaming is responsible? The Sinking City is out on March 21st for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

One Piece: World Seeker

Jump Force may have fizzled but One Piece: World Seeker gives us hope. It’s developed by Ganbarion of One Piece: Grand Adventure and Unlimited World RED while the story takes us to Jail Island in the New World. Luffy and crew will fighting in an open world space while characters like Kizaru, Kuma, Smoker and Akainu make appearances. If the bombastic action of the other games was any indication, expect One Piece: World Seeker to be a blast. It arrives on March 15th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Tropico 6

El Presidente never dies and Tropico 6 may be his biggest caper yet. Spanning four eras like the previous game – Colonial, World Wars, Cold War and Modern – Tropico 6 provides an entire archipelago of islands to manage instead of one island. The adventure also extends beyond the islands as agents can steal various wonders of the world for you. Research has been revamped, citizens are simulated in greater detail and you can even customize the look of your own personal dictator. And can you say election speeches? Tropico 6 arrives on March 29th for PC.

Left Alive

Square Enix’s Left Alive is one of the stranger releases of next month. It features the talents of Armored Core series director Toshifumi Nabeshima, Metal Gear Solid character designer Yoji Shinkawa and mech designer Takayuki Yanase. The focus is on survival, stealth and third person shooting with three different protagonists to play with. Oh and you can pilot mechs in some places. Despite all of that, Left Alive looks intriguing and could provide some kind of update on the Front Mission universe. It’s out on March 5th for PS4 and PC.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season – Episode 4 “Take Us Back”

It’s been a turbulent ride for the final season of The Walking Dead. We’re not just talking about the closure of Telltale Games or Skybound Entertainment stepping in to finish the last two episodes. The game itself has seen Clementine and AJ committing atrocities, doing their best to stay sane and survive while protecting their new home. With the fourth episode “Take Us Back” marking the end of Clementine’s journey, will the series drag us back into the emotional pits of despair? Or provide a happy ending after all?

"Tropico 6 is good, but not very good, or outstanding. Yet," says Kalypso's Simon Hellwig.

Those counting down the days to El Presidente’s return will have to wait – Limbic Entertainment’s Tropico 6 has been delayed. Originally set to release in January, the island management title will now release on March 29th for PC players. In an open letter to the community, Kalypso managing director Simon Hellwig revealed that feedback from beta players resulted in the delay.

Hellwig stated, “Over the holidays, I have played Tropico 6 for many hours and really liked what I saw. But, in my humble opinion, it is not enough to like a game—I want to love it! And Tropico 6 is good, but not very good, or outstanding. Yet.

“Combining my own opinion and the response we had from thousands of dedicated beta players around the world, Kalypso has decided to postpone the release of the game for another couple of months to March 29, 2019.”

To help compensate for the delay, Kalypso is making the first DLC for Tropico 6 free. Pre-order the game by January 10th, 8 PM CET on the official store or Steam to receive the DLC when it launches later this year.

In the meantime, what can fans expect to see improved? Pathfinding will be polished further, as will the multiplayer, economy, and simulation of the various denizens. For instance, your citizens will have a more active role throughout the game, setting goals and ultimately butting into your plans more. Considering how involved the citizens have been before, you can bet there will be some interesting wrinkles in the gameplay as a result.
