Originally a collaborative project between Ubisoft's Pune and Mumbai studios, the remake will now be handled by the studio that made the original.

Ubisoft has announced that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is changing developers. Previously in the works at Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai in India, the remake has now been handed over to Ubisoft Montreal, the studio that developed the original Sands of Time trilogy (though given how much time has passed, it’s unlikely the team has retained much of the same talent).

Ubisoft says its Montreal studio will “build upon the work” that’s already been done on the game until now and will evaluate what the scope of the project has to be, though there’s no mention of how its launch timeline will be affected.

“This decision is an important step and the team, building upon the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it’s ready,” Ubisoft said in a statement published on the official Prince of Persia Twitter account.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has publicly stumbled on a number of different occasions of late. Officially announced in 2020 with a January 2021 launch date, the game was instantly met with criticism for its perceived low-budget nature and disappointing visual fidelity. Not long afterward, it was delayed to March 2021, before then being delayed again, indefinitely this time, promptly afterward.

In October last year, Ubisoft said the remake was expected to launch before April 2023, though there’s no word on whether the project changing developers will mean it has had to be pushed back.

A recent leak also claimed that a second Prince of Persia game – a 2.5D title inspired by the Ori games – is also in the works at Ubisoft Montpellier. Read more on that through here.

Ubisoft says it's "not ready to share any additional information just yet." The remake is also seemingly releasing in 2022.

Ubisoft is one of the many publishers gearing up for E3 2021 and revealed which titles would be appearing at its Ubisoft Forward showcase. However, one title was missing in the line-up – Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. In an official tweet, the publisher confirmed that it would not be making an appearance at the digital event.

“We are making great progress for our game to release next year but we are not ready to share any additional information just yet. We will share an update as soon as we are ready.” The remake was originally slated to release in January 2021 before being delayed to March. It was delayed again to a “later date” and this is the first mention of it releasing next year.

The initial reveal garnered some criticism for allegedly cutting corners on the graphics and presentation (with the developer stating that there had been “no cutbacks” in the budget or timeline). Very little new information or gameplay footage has been provided since the delays and it could be a while before we hear about it again. The remake is in development for Xbox One, PS4 and PC though it may also be in development for Nintendo Switch.

As for Ubisoft Forward, it takes place on June 12th at 12 PM PT. Titles that will be featured include the next Rainbow Six, Riders Republic, Far Cry 6 and more.

Originally slated to release on January 21st 2021, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is now set for March 18th 2021. Ubisoft announced the delay on Facebook with the translated message noting that more time was required to complete the game. “We believe this is the right decision to ensure we deliver a game you enjoy.”

Revealed at Ubisoft Forward back in September, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is a faithful recreation of the 2003 classic developed by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai. While its overall visual quality was criticized, game director Pierre-Sylvain Gires confirmed that the game would still receive additional polish up till its release. Newer screenshots are definitely better than the initial showing.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is currently in development for Xbox One, PS4 and PC with support for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 via backwards compatibility. It’s also rumored to be coming to Switch, though Ubisoft hasn’t confirmed the same. Stay tuned for more details and updates in the coming months.

More studios to join their worldwide lineup.

Ubisoft has studios all over the world, and it has just announced that it will be opening two more. The first of these will be in India- specifically in India’s financial capital, Mumbai. Given that Mumbai is a hub for financial activity and young tech talent, this should prove to be a prudent move for Ubisoft.

“Our ambition is to contribute towards the development of the Indian videogame ecosystem by partnering closely with top schools and institutions,” said Jean-Philippe Pieuchot, managing director for Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai.

Ubisoft Mumbai is the second major studio that Ubisoft has opened in India, right alongside Ubisoft Pune. The studio will have up to 100 developers, and will work with Ubisoft Pune on assisting Ubisoft’s worldwide studios in AAA game development.

Ubisoft has also opened a brand new studio in Odesa, Ukraine, which makes it the latest addition to Ubisoft’s roster of Eastern European studios. “Odesa has a lot to offer in terms of talent, in particular tech professionals. We’re always on the lookout for high potential markets with the passion, skills, and expertise to create the very best games, and Odesa’s reputation in several key fields makes this investment the perfect match,” said the publisher about the newest studio.

Given that Ubisoft has recently won its financial and creative freedom against the impending threat of a buyout by Vivendi, hopefully we will see these studios contribute to Ubisoft’s fantastic lineup of games in the coming years.
