When Bethesda announced Starfield at E3 2018, we kind of knew it was coming. At that moment, it felt more tangible than any rumours before. However, it then announced that The Elder Scrolls 6 was in development as well, and there was very little question of it arriving any time soon, much less for this generation.
For its part, Bethesda has been alluding to the sequel releasing for the next generation of consoles. Recently at PAX AUS, ZeniMax Online Studios game director Matt Firor outright told GameSpot that the game is a long way off. “The easiest thing is look at how it was announced; it was Starfield and then Elder Scrolls 6. You can go back and count the years between Bethesda Game Studios releases, and you’ll get the idea it’s not coming anytime soon.”
Firor then stated then when The Elder Scrolls 6 finally does release, “there will be a different console generation by then, I’m sure.” It’s worth noting that Bethesda has yet to officially announce whether the game will be out for the next generation of consoles. Then again, that’s likely because it doesn’t want to outright announce a PS5 or new Xbox before Sony and Microsoft respectively.
At the very least, it’s good to know that Starfield – whatever that ends up being – will arrive to fill the gap. Bethesda isn’t completely free until then either. It’s currently working on Fallout 76, a shared world online title set in the post-nuclear apocalypse. That’s out on November 14th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
