The Last of Us Part 2 Is “About 50 Percent Bigger” Than The First Game, Says Co-Writer Halley Gross

Prepare for a meaty campaign.

We’ve seen an outbreak of new details on The Last of Us Part 2 over the past few days, with Naughty Dog giving players glimpses into what changes and improvements we can expect to see in the upcoming sequel, and it’s clear that this is going to be a massive game. Even in the absence of multiplayer mode, Naughty Dog are claiming that this is the biggest, most ambitious game they’ve ever made (and no, it’s not open world).

But exactly how big is “big”? Speaking in an interview with GamerBraves, The Last of Us Part 2 co-writer Halley Gross touched on the topic, mentioning that it’s going to be roughly 50 per cent bigger than the first game, but that it’s bigger in terms of more than just the length and the size of the levels.

“The game I think we’re saying is about 50 per cent bigger,” she said. “But it is massive. Not just in length, but like, all of our levels are bigger and wider, we have more cinematics, we have more characters, we have more animations, we have larger melee systems. In every way, this game is bigger and better.”

The Last of Us was roughly a 15-20 hour game, so going by what Gross is saying, Part 2 is probably going to be a 25-30 hour-long game. That said, the technology that’s powering the game behind the scenes is probably going to be very taxing, because at retail, The Last of Us Part 2 is going to ship on two Blu-Ray discs.

The Last of Us Part 2 is out on February 21, 2020 for the PS4. Those who’re disappointed at the lack of multiplayer have something to look forward to as well, with Naughty Dog recently teasing that Factions will eventually come back in some capacity. Read more on that through here.
