When Tom Clancy’s XDefiant was first unveiled halfway through last year, the game was instantly met with widespread backlash. On top of looking like yet another generic multiplayer shooter that’s looking to chase trends, it was also criticized for the sever whiplash between its cavalier and seemingly irreverent tone and the fact that it bore the “Tom Clancy” name.
We’ve heard next to nothing about the game for quite some time now, and there’s no telling yet how its gameplay is shaping up behind-the-scenes, but at least one of those issues has seemingly forced Ubisoft to make some changes. According to known industry insider Tom Henderson, Tom Clancy’s XDefiant will drop the “Tom Clancy” branding from its name, becoming just XDefiant.
That is, of course, a superficial change where the game and how it plays are concerned, but at least it won’t feel so tonally out of place without the Tom Clancy series’ name to live up to. Whenever it launches, it will feature full cross-play support, but there’s no word exactly on when exactly that’ll be.
