Watch Dogs: Ubisoft Says Trademark Abandonment Request is Fradulent

Ubisoft clarifies reports of abandoning its principal trademark for Watch Dogs.

Still wondering why Ubisoft would file to abandon its principal trademark for Watch Dogs? While it didn’t mean the game was cancelled, there was still a fair amount of confusion – especially because it could have meant the game was getting a name change.

Ubisoft has responded to the abandonment request, and stated that, “On February 1, 2014, Ubisoft Entertainment received an email from TEAS@uspto.gov notifying Ubisoft Entertainment that a Request for Express Abandonment had been filed in connection with Application Serial No. 85642398. The Request for Express Abandonment purports to be signed by the Chief Executive Officer of Ubisoft Entertainment, Yves Guillemot.

“Mr. Guillemot, however, did not sign the Request for Express Abandonment, nor did Ubisoft Entertainment file the Request for Express Abandonment. The Request for Express Abandonment is fraudulent and was not filed by Ubisoft Entertainment or its representative.”

Ubisoft has since requested that the trademark not be abandoned after all. All’s well that end’s well and whatnot.

Watch Dogs is due to release this Spring for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, PC and Wii U.
