Yesterday, the heartbreaking announcement that the eagerly anticipated conclusion to the Witcher saga, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, would be delayed into early 2015 was made. While a lot ofplayers were understandably disappointed, a lot of them were also concerned about how this delay would affect CD Projekt RED’s other big RPG project, Cyberpunk 2077, which was slated for a 2015 release, also on Xbox One, PS4, and PC (like The Witcher 3).
Well, as it turns out, due to two completely different development teams, the delay of The Witcher 3 should not have any affect on the development of Cyberpunk 2077 at all, CEO Marcin Iwinski confirmed to Gamespot.
“Cyberpunk 2077 is developed by a separate team within CD Projekt Red, so the development of Cyberpunk 2077 is not really affected,” he confirmed. He did, however, admit that some members of the Cyberpunk team had been relocated to The Witcher 3.
“In order to ship a huge RPG we do use help of certain team members between teams. It works this way between Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3,” he said.
“We are working hard to deliver an outstanding RPG and rest assured, that all the learnings on The Witcher 3 are being applied to the Cyberpunk 2077 development,” Iwinski concluded.
Whereas the honesty is appreciated, it still doesn’t allay fears completely that the game might get delayed. Maybe the re-allocation of developers will introduce some inevitable unpredictable delays. Maybe CD Projekt RED might delay Cyberpunk for strategic reasons, so that they don’t have two major releases in one year. Who knows?
