Xbox One Heart Sensing Tech Not Developed In-House

According to sources, the idea originally came from a game dev for the original Kinect.

Here’s something interesting: the Heart Sensing mechanics, based on Eulerian Video Magnification, that Microsoft announced for Kinect 2.0 on the Xbox One, may not be developed in-house like the company claims. Using magnification properties of normal video feeds, the technology is capable of reading a person’s heart rate and pulse.

According to a source that spoke with Forbes, the idea itself came from a game developer who wanted the idea on the original Kinect. Another source claimed, “Some of us just heard about the heart rate thing the day of the announcement. Apparently a game developer asked us about using the original Kinect could to do something like this. We took the idea and ran with it.”

Whereas Microsoft indicated the technology was all developed in-house – which may be the case, but doesn’t change the fact that it took the idea from elsewhere.

All the big M had to say about it was that, “We are excited to share more details in a few weeks at E3 and over the coming months, but we don’t have anything further to share at this time.” As always, stay tuned for more.
