It’s an exciting time for the industry- we have the PlayStation VR, which just launched, we have the impending launch of the PS4 Pro, which will be the world’s first 4K console, we have the Xbox One Scorpio, which is being billed as the strongest console ever made, and we have the Nintendo Switch, which looks to be a truly exciting portable-console hybrid.
The latter two systems, especially, excite the imagination, especially since they seem to be pushing the boundaries so much more than anything on the market currently. So when we got the chance to talk to Tomasz Dutkiewicz, CEO of Madmind Studio, the developers behind Agony, we decided to ask him for his take on both, the Scorpio and the Switch. And Dutkiewicz seems rather impressed by both machines, it sounds like.
“One of the roles that I have at Madmind is creating particle effects; and all I can say from my perspective is that Scorpio seems to have all that is necessary to make particle effects and shaders much more complex. And it will be a visible difference from what we have now,” he said, when asked about the Scorpio.
On the Switch, he seemed to be unwilling to count Nintendo out, noting that Nintendo have always been able to make unusual ideas work, and that the Switch seems to be ‘interesting’ to begin with.
“Nintendo always surprises the world with their original ideas, and NX also seems to be an interesting machine,” he said. “A few years ago, many people claimed that the Wii would be a disaster, but it turned out to be perfect for the casual players. We just need to wait and see.”
Indeed, whether or not the Scorpio and Switch can realize their promise is something that remains to be seen. As a fan of gaming, and of Nintendo and Xbox, I will keep my fingers crossed that they live up to all their potential and promise.
