There’s been an absolute deluge of new details on the Xbox Series X today, and among all this info, something that Microsoft have shed some light on is the next-gen console’s backward compatibility capabilities. We’ve heard, for example, about backward compatible games natively supporting HDR on the Series X, and about the fact that Gears 5 will support Smart Delivery.
Something else that’s emerged courtesy of Digital Foundry is the fact that a select catalog of games on the console’s back-compat program will natively support other enhancements as well, such as higher frame rates and resolutions. The Digital Foundry article also mentions Gears of War: Ultimate Edition running at 4K as opposed to its native 1080p. What’s most notable about this feature is that all the work will be done at a system level, which means game developers themselves won’t have to spend any time or resources on the enhancements in question.
Peggy Lo, compatibility program lead for Xbox, also said the Microsoft is considering introducing such enhancements to a “curated” list of games, and that these enhancements might even see doubled frame rates and resolution.
“We are exploring ways of improving, maybe, a curated list of games,” said Lo. “Things that we are are looking at include improving resolution for games, improving frame-rates – maybe doubling them! And the way we’re doing it is really exploring multiple methods. So we knew what we were doing with the Heutchy Method, maybe we’ll change it a bit, there’s a there’s a few other methods that we’re exploring.”
However, plans for this are not yet final.
“What we’re probably not going to do is explain all those methods today because we’re still in the process of figuring out what exact method will be best for the Series X but I want you to feel confident that we have a solution that we can fall back on or that we will always keep pushing forward to,” Lo said.
