Airtight Games On PS4/Xbox One RAM: Devs Will ‘Definitely’ Run Out of Memory As Games Become Complex

Art Director of Murdered Soul Suspect on next-gen memory.

The current generation of consoles features a ton of memory and almost saw a 16 fold increase compared to last gen consoles. Given that the developers were struggling with limited memory back then, we asked Dennis Price, Art Director of Murdered Soul Suspect, about his thoughts on whether developers will start running out of memory once again as games get complex.

“I’ve been doing computer graphics for production (mostly pre-rendered) for over 15 years. I’ve watched the available hardware ceiling get higher and higher. There are so many technologies (known and unknown) that aren’t being utilized due to hardware limitations. Once that ceiling rises, those technologies will fill that void instantly. Short answer, yes definitely,” he explained to GamingBolt.

Given that the actual allocated RAM for games is much less [5GB for Xbox One and a reported 4.5GB to 5.5GB in case of PS4], it will be interesting to see how developers utilize them. It’s still more than the average memory found in gaming PCs though so with better tools and API, developers will obviously be utilizing memory usage.

Murdered Soul Suspect is due to release this June for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. For more on the game check out its hub page here.
