Larian Studios is known for its humour, even with all the grim happenings of Divinity: Original Sin 2. While this may concern hardcore Forgotten Realms fans since the studio is working on Baldur’s Gate 3, its biggest RPG ever, there will be some dialling back. This isn’t to say that there won’t be any moments that won’t make you smile though.
VG247 spoke to Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke, who said, “It’s going to be somewhat darker, more serious. But serious topics work much better if there’s a little bit of humor in there, and Dungeons and Dragons is about having fun at the tabletop. So that means there is going to be stuff that will make you smile.”
For what it’s worth, Baldur’s Gate isn’t the ultra-serious RPG series that many like to believe it is. You have characters like Minsc, the beloved NPC from the first two games who pursued justice to an insane degree. Minsc would often consult with Boo, his companion hamster, as well. Interestingly, we may see both of them return in Baldur’s Gate 3.
As Vincke states, “If you look at what the Fifth Edition has done, characters like Boo and Minsc are still alive. Bhaal and maybe a couple of other guys are still around. What’s gonna happen with that? You’re gonna discover when you play BG3.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 was unveiled during Google’s Stadia Connect presentation and was arguably one of the biggest highlights of that entire week (yes, including E3 2019). It will be coming to PC and Google Stadia down the line. Don’t expect it this year though.
