If you haven’t been keeping track of Call of Duty: Black ops 3, then you may only be slightly aware of the latest hotfix for Treyarch’s first person shooter. As it turns out, the update wasn’t without its consequences and players were quick to complain how matchmaking was changed for the sake of skill-based searching.
Studio designer director David Vonderhaar addressed these concerns recently and stated, “Let me get this out of the way so we can all go back to having fun. First, I love you. I’ll be as transparent as I can get away with.”
He followed up by admitting that, “We did tune matchmaking. It was tweaked. I said as much on Friday as I try to do whenever we hotfix the game.”
However, the changes that came with the tweaks didn’t quite work as intended. “It did come with consequences we didn’t understand in totality. We also un-tweaked it the following day, until we can investigate.”
That being said, any concerns of search criteria being changed and altered should be allayed. Vonderhaar said that, “What we didn’t do is ‘turn on’ or implement anything new that would deliberately prioritize any criteria over connection. And we won’t.”
