In its Q3 fiscal year 2022 financial results, Activision revealed that next year would have the “most robust Call of Duty live operations to date.” This includes the next “full premium release in the blockbuster annual series,” implying a brand new game to be in development.
However, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier on Twitter, this is a “continuation of Modern Warfare 2. It’s called a full premium release because they’re probably going to market and sell it as a $70 game with new single- and multiplayer content. But it’s more MW2.”
There have been rumors about Activision’s plans for Call of Duty next year. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that the next entry by Treyarch was internally delayed to 2024. The publisher later confirmed premium paid content in 2023, which saw leaker The Ghost of Hope reporting that this would be a map pack for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Along with remastered maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009), it would also have maps from titles developed by Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, and Infinity Ward. They would then claim that campaign DLC is also in the works and included with the pack.
In a follow-up tweet, Schreier made it “super clear” that Treyarch’s next title is out in 2024. Modern Warfare 2’s “premium” paid expansion is developed by Sledgehammer Games and is “supposed to have lots of content! Maybe that’s why they call it a ‘full’ release. But it’s more MW2.”
As always, time will tell, so stay tuned for more details in the new year. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available for Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Check out our official review here.
