Cyberpunk 2077 not having lived up to expectations isn’t news to anyone at this point, and even though it’s in much better state than it was upon its disastrous release a couple of years ago, it’d be fair to say that it’s still not exactly a groundbreaking game. Of course, as more than a few examples have shown over the years, a game doesn’t need to be a game of the year contender for it to eventually receive a “Game of the Year Edition” launch at retail, and it seems like that’s going to be the case with CD Projekt RED’s action RPG as well.
As reported by Insider Gaming, during recent investors call, CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski said that Cyberpunk 2077 will follow The Witcher 3’s pattern and receive see the launch of a Game of the Year Edition once its expansion Phantom Liberty has launched.
“It’s the natural order of things – it was the same with The Witcher, which after both expansions was finally released as a Game of the Year Edition and has been on the market that way ever since. The same can be expected in this case,” Kicinski said.
Interestingly, Phantom Liberty is only set to launch for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, so it remains to be seen whether CD Projekt RED will release Cyberpunk 2077’s Game of the Year Edition for PS4 and Xbox One as well. Presumably that won’t be the case, since the expansion is likely to be part of the package.
