DOOM Eternal Engine Is “Getting the Most Out of” PS4 and Xbox One

"I can’t tell you enough about how good it looks on PS4 and Xbox," says director Marty Stratton.

After a couple of months of radio silence following the game’s long delay into March of this year, DOOM Eternal has come roaring back to life in recent days. A new trailer for the game has been followed by round of gameplay previews that have brought about a ton of new footage and details on the game, from its new hub area to how long the shooter’s campaign is going to be.

Something else the game’s new footage has made abundantly clear is that DOOM Eternal – as the first game ever to use id Software’s next-gen enhancement of their engine, id Tech 7 – is going to be an absolute looker. But while the recent footage coming off gameplay previews was running on a high-end PC (as you would expect), the developer has also moved to give assurances that the game will be a visual beast even on the PS4 and the Xbox One.

At the recent preview event (via VGC), the game’s director Marty Stratton had lot of high praises for how it will look on current gen hardware. “This game is, I think, the best technology we’ve ever made,” said Stratton, echoing similar statements id Software have made about DOOM Eternal as whole on multiple occasions.

“We’re at the end of a hardware cycle where engine teams really understand the hardware and are getting the most out of it,” he continued. “We’ve increased graphics fidelity, polygon count… everything is pushed in this game and it still runs on all the consoles that DOOM (2016) ran on.

“It’s fantastic. I can’t tell you enough about how good it looks on PS4 and Xbox. If you play on consoles you’ve got something really special to look forward to.”

DOOM Eternal is out for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on March 20- and apparently, the studio has been “crunching pretty hard” to hit that release date. A Nintendo Switch version is also currently in development – with Panic Button being in charge of porting duties – but doesn’t currently have a release date.
