DOOM Eternal is a first person shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda. It is the fifth mainline title in the DOOM franchise, and a direct sequel to the series reboot DOOM (2016).

Development

DOOM Eternal was officially unveiled by Bethesda at E3 2018, where it was announced that the game would be releasing simultaneously on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch, with Panic Button handling the game’s Switch version, just as they had done for DOOM (2016). Later, it was also confirmed that the game would be launching on Google Stadia as well.

On the Switch, the game is confirmed to be running at 30 frames per second, as opposed to 60 FPS on other platforms. Bethesda also confirmed that on PC, the game would launch on Steam as well, and not be exclusive to the Bethesda.net launcher. Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin return as directors of the game once again, after serving the same role on DOOM (2016). Mick Gordon also returns as the music composer.

While DOOM (2016) was built on the idTech6 engine, DOOM Eternal is developed on its next gen version, id Tech 7. As per the developers, idTech7 has the capacity to display and feature ten times the geometric detail as idTech 6, and will also allow the game to feature more destructibility in the enemies players fight in the game.

With DOOM Eternal, the developers also intend to launch a “DOOM universe” with the game, with a greater emphasis on an overarching narrative and lore, such as visiting more diverse locations in the game, including “Hell on earth.” Another location, Phobos, will also be in the game. The game will also feature third person cutscenes unlike its predecessor, in which cutscenes were shown purely from a first person perspective through the eyes of the Doom Slayer.

It was also announced that id Software would be developing the online multiplayer component of DOOM Eternal itself, instead of outsourcing it as they had done with DOOM (2016). The previous game’s SnapMap feature is also removed, so the developers could allocate those resources to post-launch DLC for the game. DLC is set to include at least two campaign expansions, as well as maps and more playable demons for the online Battle Mode (with the latter being released for free).

Story

DOOM Eternal takes place after DOOM (2016). The forces of Hell have overrun earth and demons are destroying the planet. The Doom Slayer returns once again to combat these forces. As he does so, however, he also incurs the wrath of the forces of Heaven, and now has to contend with both.

Gameplay

DOOM Eternal features the same fast-paced first person shooter combat as its predecessor that encourages players to be more aggressive and mobile, however, it adds many new options for players to emphasize those aspects even more in both combat and traversal. Mobility options have been expanded, with the Doom Slayer now being able to wall-climb and be able to do a short, quick dash in any direction.

The Super Shotgun also comes equipped with a grappling hook, called the Meat Hook, which has applications in combat as well as the environment for traversal and platforming. In combat, the Doom Slayer can fire the Meat Hook at an enemy to pull himself toward that enemy, while in platforming it can be used as a regular grappling hook.

New weapons have also been added, such as Crucible Blade, which appeared in DOOM (2016) but wasn’t usable. An arm blade has also been added to the game for melee moves and quicker glory kills. The Doom Slayer’s armour can also be equipped with several new shoulder-mounted armaments, such as a grenade launcher, or a flamethrower, or a missile launcher, which can be used in conjunction with regular weapons. Another new weapon is the Ballista, which fires a single shot that sticks to enemies momentarily before exploding.

id Software have also confirmed that DOOM Eternal has twice as many enemy types as DOOM (2016). Several familiar demons return, such as the Archvile, Revenant, Arachnotron, and the Pain Elemental. Meanwhile, new enemies include (but are not limited to) the Marauder – a hulking and armoured horned beast wielding a giant battleaxe and a Super Shotgun – and the Doom Hunter – a part-demon part-machine entity that is designed to hunt the Doom Slayer.

DOOM Eternal also introduces a health system, with the Doom Slayer being able to pick up green armour suits in the environment that serve as a 1-up. Upon dying, if the Doom Slayer has any lives remaining, he respawns rather than being sent back to the last checkpoint. The game also has a hub location where the Doom Slayer can “hang out” and where players will be able to see how he spends his free time. A “Destructible Demons” system is also introduced, which sees demons’ bodies getting visibly more damaged as they take more damage during combat.

DOOM Eternal also has a multiplayer component, but does not have any traditional competitive multiplayer mode. The campaign has an Invasion mechanic, which allows other players to invade players’ campaign as demons and fight against them (though this can be turned off for those who wish to play solo).

In addition to Invasions, there is also a dedicated multiplayer mode called Battle Mode. Battle Mode is a 2v1 experience that takes place across five rounds, and pits a team of two player controlled demons against another player controlling the Doom Slayer. If the Slayer wins a round, the player gets to summon the BFG-9000, while if the demons win a round, they get to summon the Baron of Hell. The demons win a round by killing the Slayer, while the Slayer, upon killing one demon, will get a twenty second window to kill the second demon as well. If the Slayer is unable to do so, the dead demon respawns with half health.

In Battle Mode, the Slayer is equipped with all his weapons, mods, and equipment from the campaign, while the demons also have several tools to combat against the Slayer, such as being able to summon AI-controlled demons, being able to see the Slayer’s outline while he’s in their line of sight, and setting down environmental traps and hazards. Each map has a portal at both ends, which the Slayer can use to quickly get from one end to the other, though the demons can also use these portals to their advantage by setting up traps.

Battle Mode has six maps at launch, though id Software will be adding more as post-launch DLC later on. There also also five playable demons at launch. These are the Mancubus (a tank character with a lot of health and quipped with canons and flamethrowers), the Revenant (equipped with a jetpack for more mobility), the Pain Elemental (who can fly and use a Soul Shield to absorb damage), the Archvile, and the Marauder. More demons will be added to the game for free as post-launch DLC.
