Final Fantasy 14 Won’t Release on Xbox Game Pass

Producer/director Naoki Yoshida says this is due to its paid subscription model.

Microsoft made waves last year when it announced that a number of Final Fantasy games would be coming to Xbox Game Pass. Later, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that the MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 would be coming to Xbox One. What’s currently the status of this?

According to producer and director Naoki Yoshida in conversation with Twinfinite, you shouldn’t expect to see it on Game Pass. “I haven’t really considered releasing FF14 on Game Pass. This is because FF14 itself is a subscription-model game.” So it would be kind of unfair to current PC and PS4 players who are paying monthly to enjoy the game.

That being said, Yoshida noted that Phil Spencer is “very dedicated” in his support for the game. “Phil is very dedicated in his support for FF14, and I truly appreciate his efforts. I hope that one day, Phil and I can stand shoulder to shoulder and create an opportunity for gamers around the world to enjoy FF14 even more.”

Final Fantasy 14 saw the release of its third major expansion, Shadowbringers, last year to strong critical acclaim (several proclaimed it as the current best Final Fantasy story). The MMO passed over 18 million total players as of December 2019 and has been releasing weighty updates like “Echoes of Fallen Star” that continue the story. It may be a while before it hits Xbox One so stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
