Grand Theft Auto 5 Nearly at 170 Million Lifetime Sales

Rockstar's open-world epic is still a massive success and the best-selling game of the past decade in the US in unit and dollar sales.

Take-Two Interactive recently revealed its Q1 fiscal year 2023 financials, announcing another delay for Marvel’s Midnight Suns. It also provided updated sales figures for its top franchises like Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto. Grand Theft Auto 5 continues to be major success for the company with nearly 170 million units sold-in to date (total franchise sales are over 380 million). The last major milestone was over 165 million units sold as of May 2022.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is still the best-selling game of the past decade in the United States based on unit and dollar sales (as per The NPD Group’s data). First released in 2013 and available across three console generations, it remains Take-Two’s biggest success yet (and is the fastest entertainment release to reach $1 billion in retail sales). Grand Theft Auto Online is also as popular as ever though specific figures weren’t provided for the same.

Rockstar Games is currently working on the next Grand Theft Auto which Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported as taking place in “fictional version” of Miami. It will feature a female protagonist who is part of a pair of leading characters based on Bonnie and Clyde. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that development is “well underway” and that Rockstar is “determined to once again set creative benchmarks for the series, our industry, and for all entertainment, just as the label has done with every one of their frontline releases.”

Though it’s rumored to be targeting a release in the 2024 fiscal year, the sequel could launch as late as 2025. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
