Helldivers 2 to Introduce “New Lethal Variants” of Existing Terminids with New Planetary Modifier

Arrowhead senior character artist Vidar Rapp also teases that his favorite contribution, potentially a new enemy, is yet to come.

Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2 has a massive new update out next week with Escalation of Freedom, adding several new enemies, Super-Helldive difficulty, and large enemy outposts. However, there are other features inbound for the co-op shooter, including one that could generate terrifying new Terminid threats.

In the developer’s July 2024 Community Update, senior character artist Vidar Rapp – who created the Automatons’ Factory Striders – was in the spotlight. While teasing that his favorite thing “isn’t yet released”, he confirmed a new planetary modifier that would result in “new lethal variants” of existing Terminids.

Rapp is “pleased” with the result and feels they’ll present a “unique challenge” for players. Of course, he also worked on the Impaler, a returning Terminid foe which smacks players with its giant tentacles. It’s possible that his next creation is a new enemy, though time will tell.

Helldivers 2: Escalation of Freedom lands on August 6th for PS5 and PC – stay tuned for detailed patch notes to confirm if the new planetary modifier has made it in. A new Warbond, Freedom’s Flame, debuts on August 8th. The latter adds two new fire-based primary weapons and one new secondary, two armor sets, an armor passive that provides 75 percent fire damage resistance, and new cosmetics.
